ST MARY MAGDALENE PARISH Sunday March 11, 2012

Third Sunday of Lent, Year B

Gospel John 2:13-25

The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus

went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple he

found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves,

and the money changers seated at their

tables. 15Making a whip of cords, he drove

all of them out of the temple, both the sheep

and the cattle. He also poured out the coins

of the money changers and overturned their

tables. 16He told those who were selling the

doves, ‘Take these things out of here! Stop

making my Father’s house a marketplace’.

17His disciples remembered that it was

written, “Zeal for your house will consume

me.”

18‘The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign

can you show us for doing this?’ 19Jesus

answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in

three days I will raise it up.’ 20The Jews then

said, ‘This temple has been under

construction for forty-six years, and will you

raise it up in three days?’ 21But he was

speaking of the temple of his body. 22After

he was raised from the dead, his disciples

remembered that he had said this; and they

believed the scripture and the word that Jesus

had spoken.

23When he was in Jerusalem during the

Passover festival, many believed in his name

because they

saw the signs

that he was

doing. 24But

Jesus on his

part would not

entrust himself to them, because he knew all

people 25and needed no one to testify about

anyone; for he himself knew what was in

everyone.

Thoughts on the Gospel

‘The Gospel for today from St John is

sometimes called 'The cleansing of the

Temple'. It is not just about the upsetting of the

traders in the Temple: the money changers and

the sacrificial victim sellers. It bodes the

destruction of the Temple. It bodes the renewed

establishment of the Temple in the resurrected

body of Jesus Christ, the new sanctuary. It is an

event in Jesus' life leading into his future, but

also pointing to the fulfillment of the past.

‘The Temple was the sign of the presence of

God in a special way. The presence of God was

linked to the Covenant with God, the

Commandments of God. This Covenant united

a whole people in unity with the One True

God. Their unity reflected His unity.

‘St John in the Gospel sees the death of the

Temple as foreshadowing the death of Jesus,

but also the resurrected Jesus will be the New

Temple of worship. For the Christian the

resurrected Jesus is especially present in the

Eucharist. This is a fulfillment of the Old

Testament. Churches of a certain period and

tradition would have the Ten Commandments

printed on the walls of their churches. As we

go towards Easter the catechumens' spiritual

completion will be in receiving the Eucharist.

The Old Testament elements are there in a new

way.’

Congratulations

Congratulations to six dedicated Beauval Fire & Rescue

members who attended ice rescue training in Meadow Lake this

past weekend. The following members are now CERTIFIED in

ice rescue:

Shirley Bell-Morin

Sara Aubichon

Fred Maurice

Anthony Alcrow

Joey Lafleur

Travis Rediron

We are now in the process

of purchasing our own

rescue equipment and we are going to do some ice rescue

training before the ice is off the lake if anyone is interested in

observing, you are more than welcome to do so. I will keep you

posted as to when and where this training will take place.

We hope to establish a website in the near future where all these

photos and videos will be posted.

Beauval Fire and Rescue would like to give a big thank you to

the Northern Village of Beauval for their financial support for

this ice rescue training.

PS - As Beauval Fire Chief,

I am very proud of these

individuals who took time

off to complete this training

this past weekend.

Jerry Morin,

Beauval Fire Chief
