Descriptions:

Dao Yin Wu Wei Qigong: This is a Qigong form developed by the Liu family of China. It resembles Tai Chi without the precise positioning found in the more more martial art style of Tai Chi. Qigong is part of Chinese Medicine and each form addresses specific or general aspects of the practitioner's health. This form focuses on flowing movements, physical tension and release, and breath control, and is useful for bringing your energy (more metaphoric than actual) back into your body (calming down). This form has roughly five positions and so can be learned in a relatively short amount of time. Intro to Gregorian Chant: Learn how to sing Gregorian Chant! Emphasis on reading chant notation, vocal technique, and interpretation. GMing 101: I will teach the basics of how to run Dungeons and Dragons or other Tabletop Role-Playing Games. I plan to introduce myself and explain the fundamentals of the role of the Game Master. We will then design a small example adventure and then explore different kinds of encounters or challenges. We'll then form small groups to run the adventure that the class designed, people taking turns running the game. Reed Architecture & History Tour: The architecture of Reed College is a window on the evolution of 20th Century architecture and the history of the college itself. This 2-hour walking tour takes us from the Collegiate Gothic of A.E. Doyle's Eliot Hall through the Modernism of Pietro Belluschi, alumnus Neil Farnham ’40, and others, and finally the Post-Modernism of the Zimmer Gunsel Frasca era and the new Performing Arts Building. This tour offers an opportunity to hone observational skills — for architectural details, ornament, building materials, and even geological setting — to tell the intertwining history of 20th Century architectural styles, Portland, and Reed.Since 2015, I have given this tour 10 times (for Paideia, Alumni Week, etc.) developing it with the assistance of local architectural historian Eric Wheeler, Reed Special Collections, and other Reed staff. The basics of movie storytelling (day 1) The basic principles that every aspiring screenwriter needs to know; like what makes a story a story, how storytelling in film differs from other mediums, basic narrative structure, things most beginners get wrong. Breath release meditation: Participants will learn how to meditate and release past and present issues, including stress and anxiety.... A Briefing on the SCP Foundation: I'll introduce you to the SCP Foundation, the world’s largest fictional universe of creepypastas, assuming the role of an SCP researcher. How to impress your crush using email: Have you ever wanted to write an email? After taking this class, you'll write emails that you'd want to print out and frame! Also, you will get the undying love you deserve after sending hundreds of emails at once to your crush. Let's talk about Homestuck--Meme Edition: Listen, it's 2020. If you don't know what Homestuck is by this point, you never will and probably are perfectly fine with that. However, as a student at Reed, I believe it is important to make sure that I ~spread knowledge~ whenever I

can. In this program, I explain Homestuck and its following through humor, self-deprecation, leftist analysis, and appreciation for how gay this comic is. I'll do a power point, then any former and current Homestuck fans can sit and discuss/joke around. If you're not a fan, I might not convince you to read Homestuck, but hopefully you'll come out a little gayer and with some more in-jokes. Great for anyone who misses the year 2012 for some reason. Queer and Snappy-- Writing Workshop: This lecture-guided workshop will dissect flash fiction from a queer perspective. Using economy, negative space, and structure, we'll generate single-sentence and short stories that center LGBTQ voices and experiences. Bring a pen and a notebook. Coffee provided. Emotional self-regulation-- an experiential workshop sampling a dozen techniques and strategies: How to surf and influence your moods and aspects of your physiology. These are life skills.

Descriptions:

Belay Technique: This class will be a one-hour instruction on how to belay top-rope rock climbers at Reed’s climbing gym taught by two staff members of the Reed climbing gym: Jane Calderbank and Sara Hansen. We will go over the basics, from how to tie a figure eight knot to climbing commands, giving each participant a chance to become belay-certified. A discussion of belaying best practices and mechanics will be followed by open climb time. Liberation theology 101: Come learn about the revolutionary faith that took Latin America by storm in the twentieth century and continues to be enormously influential to the peoples of the Global South! This class will provide an overview of the history of the movement (from CELAM to the Sandinistas onward), key theoretical concepts, its cultural products and conclude with discussion of its offshoots (black theology, Palestinian liberation theology, etc). Fruit and arepas will be provided! "My son, the Holy Church is on the right, but Jesus Christ was always on the left.” — Isabel Allende, House of Spirits On Infinities: Ordinals and Cardinals: I'm learning about ordinals for my thesis, and I think they're fascinating. For this class, I'll create an intuitive presentation of ordinals, and say enough about cardinals to state the difference between the two. The level of detail will depend on the interests of whoever shows up. The topics may include: operations on ordinals, Cantor's Diagonal Argument, the Continuum Hypothesis, and the relevance of "kinds of infinity" given the difficulty of applying them immediately to the world around us. Time will be allotted for discussion.. The Basics of Movie Storytelling: The basic principles that every aspiring screenwriter needs to know; like what makes a story a story, how storytelling in film differs from other mediums, basic narrative structure, things most beginners get wrong. HIST XXX: Formosa, Taiwan, or the Republic of China? As a threatened democracy right on the borders of the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan is an important strategic asset to the United States. Find out more about the island at this quick course! How to Make a Paper Airplane: We will explain and demonstrate a select number of paper airplane designs, from classic to complex. We will provide paper to make your own. Worldbuilding with Wendell: For people who want to be writers or Dungeon Masters, worldbuilding skills are key to their continued success. However I believe everyone has a world inside of them. Being able to worldbuild is an powerful introspective practice that can reveal hidden beliefs that would otherwise remain buried in the subconscious. We'll use techniques borrowed from a variety of philosophical and psychological models to teach folks how to generate worlds that feel real. Everyone will have a chance to build a world for themselves that they can use for their own personal development or to build a story out of. The British Empire 40,000 years into the future: Lecture will discuss how the game Warhammer 40K acts as a cultural expression describing certain historical aspects of the British Empire, namely through the game’s main faction, the Imperium. A Case Study In Computing: The Electrical Versus The Mechanical:

Page 7: Classes - Reed College · 2020. 8. 27. · I'll introduce you to the SCP Foundation, the world’s largest fictional universe of creepypastas, assuming the role of an SCP researcher

In this class, I will discuss a portion of my winter research pertaining to the differences in construction between electrical and mechanical computers. I will also discuss how these two very different systems both give rise to computing machines and how they both approach the same problems in different ways. I will facilitate discussion using the Difference Engine, the Analytic Engine, and the Manchester "Baby" as case studies. The design schematics and letters pertaining to these computers and my own circuits will be used to emphasis the important contrasts between the two computer design types. Slay your demons: Using Roleplaying Games as Personal Development In this class we'll explore the ways one can use roleplaying games to improve your life. We'll explore how you can do shadow work by playing the dark side of characters, and how, as Game Masters, you can create games that encourage people to bring their full selves into the world. We'll also teach character building strategies and tactics that will allow you to build characters that will develop skills that can be applied directly to your real life! We'll pull ideas from integral theory and Jane McGonigal's work on gamifying your life. "Blue Like Jazz": the Papal Screening Join Jeff "Moose" Price ’03, former Pope of the Reed College Student Body, as he hosts a screening of the most accurate (and simultaneously least-accurate) movie ever made about the Reed experience, the 2012 Christian comedy "Blue Like Jazz". The event will feature an introductory presentation outlining the history of "Olde Reed" and the Reed papacy, interactive movie-themed trivia contests and games, refreshments, live commentary on the movie and aspects of Reed culture that it attempts to portray, and a post-show set of music videos from Reed-affiliated bands and artists. Local Reed alumni will be invited and encouraged to stay after the screening to meet and chat with attending students. Introduction to John Fahey and American Primitive Guitar This class will attempt to explore the life and influence of John Fahey, a mid-twentieth century guitarist known for pioneering a unique style of playing now known as "American primitive guitar." In addition to surveying the history and roots of this fascinating tradition, we will also try to place Fahey in the larger scope of American music from the 1950s through the present.

Page 9: Classes - Reed College · 2020. 8. 27. · I'll introduce you to the SCP Foundation, the world’s largest fictional universe of creepypastas, assuming the role of an SCP researcher

This course aims to review discussions of the principle of political neutrality in contemporary political theory and political philosophy. We will examine Liberal defenses of the notion that important institutions ought to remain politically neutral and avoid promoting any singular version of the Good, as well as perfectionistic, marxian, and identitarian critiques. The goal will be to acquaint students with the most sophisticated arguments for and against political neutrality, with the aim of making their own positions sharper, more nuanced, and more able to withstand critical scrutiny. 🌱 Native Terrarium Making 🌿 This class will teach you how to make a terrarium with plants that we collect from the canyon! You don't need to have any experience with terrariums or even with plants—this class is for beginners, and these bad boys don't need anything from you except a sunny window. The purpose of this class is to share my love for both terrariums and the Reed College canyon with others in an active and tangible way. The first part of the class will involve a short presentation on plant life in the canyon, how to be respectful of the ecosystem while collecting, and what exactly a terrarium is. Then, we will take a short walk in the canyon, working in pairs to collect the plants and mosses that will inhabit our terrariums. Finally, we will go back to our classroom and plant a terrarium that everyone will get to take home. If they take care of it properly (I will supply a care sheet), it may last for years! Chinese Calligraphy: Working with brushes and ink and using models taken from stone inscriptions, this one-day workshop will introduce the basics of Chinese seal script calligraphy. This course is limited to 15 students so please contact [email protected] to reserve a space.Visiting instructor Terry Louie/Lei Danxin is accomplished in the five classical scripts of Chinese calligraphy, Qin and Han dynasty seal engraving and traditional scholar painting. He studied painting with the Hebei scholar master Sun Yuqin (1915-1990) and studied calligraphy and seal engraving with master Jiang Xinheng (b. 1928). Verbal De-escalation: A class about how to gauge tense situations for personal safety, help to prevent them from escalating, tips for de-escalating others and yourself to promote useful conversation, and what to do once the conversation stops being productive. There will be time at the end for questions relating to the topic and Community Safety in general Mindfulness meditation for beginners: A class about how to gauge tense situations for personal safety, help to prevent them from escalating, tips for de-escalating others and yourself to promote useful conversation, and what to do once the conversation stops being productive. There will be time at the end for questions relating to the topic and Community Safety in general The Psychology of Non-Dualism: "The Psychology of Non-Dualism" explores the distinction between conceptual and non-conceptual understanding from several psychological and spiritual perspectives. Policy Analysis Reed Style: Policy Analysis Reed Style. This is a lecture/conference session showing how a Reed education is an excellent preparation for a career in policy analysis. Gender Inclusive Approach to Weightlifting (day 1): I would love to have to teach a class, with seminars where I lecture and demonstrate to gender minority identified students on how to use the weight room, while encouraging a healthy mindset and approach to holistic physical wellness.

Memory and Poetry in St. Petersburg (plus tea!): By January, I'll have spent my winter break working on a translation of Anna Akhmatova's poem "Requiem" with professors from Smolny in St. Petersburg, and collected an anthology in Russian and English about war and memory as reflected in poetry. In this class I'll bring back as much as I can from what I've learned -- about poetry in the modern day, about Akhmatova, and about translation. In this class we will: - share an informal space to talk about Russian poetry, and how poetry acts as a medium for cultural memory; - practice translating Russian poetry (at the end, for those who are interested -- you can bring your own favorites or we can work on Akhmatova); - and talk about the experience of being abroad, and how inhabiting a space can shape our understanding of a work Shamanic Journeywork: an experiential training: Learn to go into trance and meet a helping spirit. This can be ecstatic or, at least moving.

One Jumped Over the Candle Stick: Intro to Candle Making 6:00PM- 8:00PM

Descriptions: Political Neutrality in Political Theory and Philosophy (day 2) This course aims to review discussions of the principle of political neutrality in contemporary political theory and political philosophy. Locomotion 110 This class will present a variety of methodologies of walking, cruising, and/or moseying. Through these practices, we will seek an understanding of their relation to locomotion and to transport. Students will be expected to amble about in a manner of their choosing as well as according to the locomotion practices established by the preeminent discourse. Through ambling and shuffling ourselves to and fro, hither and thither, we seek the epistemic origins of the praxis surrounding locomotion. We wish to understand the art of locomotion as at once a haptic and optic phenomenological event. To move is to be, and to be is to move. The Other Side Of The Cross - Missionaries And The Assumed Damned Of Zimbabwe: Depending on who you are in Zimbabwe, Christian missionaries are either are an inconvenient nuissance, or they possess resources that could spell food security, education, or job opportunities for you (provided you are willing to pay the price that the Christ demands). What do those of us on the receiving side of mission work, those assumed to be damned for eternity, understand to be happening when missionaries knock on our doors? How do missionaries describe (and justify) what they do (cf. Matthew 28:19), and how do they know when one is now 'saved' What are the consequences (intended or otherwise) of missionary activities in the nation of Zimbabwe? In other words, whenJesus stands at the door of the hearts of Zimbabweans, knocking in order to dine with them (cf. Revelations 3:20), what has to exit in order to make room for him? Who gets to sit with him at the table, who decides the menu, who else does he bring to the meal, and more consequently, who gets left outside, hungry and socially ostracized? I will be looking at these questions from the perspectives of both the mission worker and the subject of missionary work, and highlighting why mission work is still popular in what is now a post-colonial nation. Book Repair 101: How To Mend Your Own Books Come lear how to mend your books! Let Me Tell You About Homestuck: The multimedia web sensation Homestuck, for better or for worse, is embedded in the culture of the Internet -- yet even now there are people for whom Homestuck was before their time. Both the narrative of Homestuck and the narrative of its existence offer much to say about readership, fan ownership, and myth-making. This lecture will offer an explanation of the plot, themes, history, and cultural significance of the artwork, and offer a forum for people to share their own experiences with and critiques of Homestuck. Advance Directives and YOU: Many college students aren't aware that as adults, they have full legal rights over their healthcare. This means that in the case of serious injury/illness, parents/guardians/spouses do not automatically get to make decisions about your care. One way to remedy this is with an advance directive! The NIH defines an advance directive as "a legal document that goes into effect only if you are incapacitated and unable to speak for yourself. This could be the result of disease or

Page 13: Classes - Reed College · 2020. 8. 27. · I'll introduce you to the SCP Foundation, the world’s largest fictional universe of creepypastas, assuming the role of an SCP researcher

severe injury—no matter how old you are. It helps others know what type of medical care you want." In this class you will learn about advance directives, receive an advance directive template, and, if you desire, get it filled out and witnessed by the end of the hour. You could be the owner of a shiny new legal document to share with those closest to you! I hope that this class will not only be a practical guide to advance directives, but also a lesson in death acceptance. While thinking about serious illness and death can be daunting, preparing for the future can also be empowering! Pelagic birds of the sub atlantic: Southern New Zealand is home to albatrosses and petrels; my recent photos will help to explain the natural history of these remarkable birds. Story Time: The Trojan Cycle I stand in front of a bunch of people and tell interconnected myths from the greater Trojan War Cycle. Starting with the key players in the Trojan War, talking some about their families and motivations. Bringing them all together to Troy and expounding the progression of the war and the subsequent fall of Troy. And finally tracking the return/drifting of various players (i.e. Agamemnon, Odysseus, and Aeneas) after the fall of Troy. Book Repair 101: How To Mend Your Own Books The purpose of this class is to teach participants basic book repair including how to tip in pages that have detached, repair a paperback that has split in half, mend a torn cover, or re-attach a detached cover. Basic vocabulary on how to talk about the book as a physical object will be covered. Participants are encouraged to bring in their own books that need repair, but we will also bring some broken books for experimenting. Tales from the Crypt A lecture on the history of cemetery design as well as some weird or entertaining stories I have learned about cemeteries, including local ones, over the course of my research. Home disaster preparedness The purpose of this class is to provide attendees the basics of being prepared for disasters at home, including an overview of the Cascadia subduction zone earthquake and other hazards in the region, making a preparedness plan, and building kits for evacuation or sheltering at home. Clarity In Action: A Practical Introduction To Zen Meditation There will be a discussion of how to do meditation (or refresher, if you already know how) and an opportunity to do some meditation. We will talk about how to find peace in difficult and turbulent circumstances. Data analysis using Stata Whether you are getting ready to dive into your thesis data analysis, prepping for a methods course, or looking to build additional analytical skills - join me to build your familiarity with Stata. In this workshop you will work with data in Stata, including creating and importing datasets, conducting analyses, and visualizing data. All students will work hands-on in Stata during our session. All levels are welcome; I will provide basics for beginners and additional exercises and options for advanced students. Afar On Your Own: How to Travel the World Solo Learn how to travel the world on your own. Britt is an avid world traveler and has backpacked on six continents on her own, in countries including Morocco, South Africa, and Indonesia. She chronicles her travels on her blog, Yes Mom I'm Alive, with the hope of inspiring other people to get out and see the world. This workshop will cover how to get the courage and motivation to travel, stay safe, and have meaningful interactions and (mis)adventures when abroad on your own. Tap That Class

Broadway tap dancer turned CUS tech support wizard Tony Palomino will guide you through a beginning tap dance warmup, followed by fun combo. No experience required! Limited pairs of tap shoes will be provided, or bring your own. How to Be a Political Scientist A mainly lecture-focused class on the history of science as invoked as a political concept, how the concept of science is currently used, and what you as someone working in science can do about it. Accidents, Power, and Weapons: the Nuclear Triad A no-holds-barred, brutally honest crash course by a reactor operator about nuclear taboo topics, because our on-campus reactor doesn't like talking about nuclear meltdowns or weapons, even if it's a cool power source. With props of reactor components! Reporting Survey Results Using Excel You've run your survey; how might you report the results? This class will give a very quick overview of some standard statistics that you might report and show you how to calculate them using Excel. A basic familiarity with Excel, e.g. knowing how to calculate percentages, is expected but no knowledge of statistics is required. This class might be most useful to staff but anyone is welcome. One Jumped Over the Candle Stick: Intro to Candle Making Learn how to make poured soy wax candles, complete with essential oils and dried flower petals. Limited to 10 participants. Descriptions: Hardcore Motherf*ckers Only™ Are you a hardcore motherf*cker? Our annual gather shall once again be held at our hour. It's going to be different than last year, but in a good way. The Gathering Thousands: Portlands Urban Crow Roost The human history of urban crow roosts is the history of people trying to get rid of them. Since 2013 downtown Portland has been the winter home to 15,000 American Crows as part of their winter survival strategy. From November through March thousands of crows descend into the city at dusk, sleep in barren trees over the Max line, and over or on other city infrastructure, and leave again each morning in search of food. This class will explain a community science project, now in its third year, that documents the roost. With stunning photos and video, the class will present the history of urban crow roosts, data collection methodology, the city's attempts to disperse the roost, and opportunities for community activism to foster understanding and conservation of Portland's most stunning example of the urban-wild interface. The class will be approximately 40 minutes of presentation followed by Q&A time. Political Neutrality in Political Theory and Philosophy (day 3) This course aims to review discussions of the principle of political neutrality in contemporary political theory and political philosophy. Anglo studies I am a student from England doing a study abroad year at Reed. My "major " back in England is American studies. This is why I'm on this study abroad year. Anyway, I want to teach a class in Anglo studies. I want to share true English culture with other Reed students. I will be leading a formal class on English culture. Similar to the formal classes on

Same Planet, Different Universes A lecture and discussion about the deepening divisions in this country. Primarily, it explores differing elementary assumptions about the world, how these differences arose and developed over time, and the consequences that these differences have for everything from the "laws of physics" and our relationship to the environment, to the workings of wealth, power, moral imperatives, and kinship systems. The repetitions of history, differing levels and kinds of community order, and history of various kinds of political manipulation will be considered. Gender Inclusive Approach to Weightlifting (day 2) I led this class last year and it was super successful! I would love to have another similar class, with seminars where I lecture and demonstrate to gender minority identified students on how to use the weight room, while encouraging a healthy mindset and approach to holistic physical wellness. Maps, mapping, and spatial analysis Your thesis might need a map, or your next class project might benefit from considering the spatial nature of your subject of interest. Join this interactive workshop to learn some basic mapping skills and get a quick introduction to spatial tools and data. All levels welcome; if you have a particular area of mapping interest, get in touch beforehand. Threat Modelling Threat modelling is the process of taking things that seem scary in a vague sort of way and organizing them into categories of things we can do something about and things we can't do something about, and then deciding which things to do something about. It's fun, used in physical and computer security, and can be a good way to organize vague fears into specific actions and decisions about what not to worry about. How to Change the World and Get Paid for It This class will explore ways that students can pursue their dreams of changing the world while making a living doing so. A Future Worse Than Death: The Dystopian Novels Of The Far Right The class focuses on the socio-political imaginations captured by the dystopian fiction novels by far-right authors. What do they imagine the world to be in the distant future? What are their fears, explicit and implicit, expressed in their books, and what are the (un)subtle calls of actions to the readers? How are the different factions within what we call "the far-right" today painting the future, and what are they each aspiring to achieve? I will be looking at how these novels describe the future as bleak and hopeless to inspire action in members of the far-right today, with real life consequences. I will be looking at case studies where these real life consequence (violence against minorities, domestic terrorism, arson, militia formation and so forth) were inspired by such works of fiction. I am working on this presentation with the help of my professors to ensure I deliver information in a responsible but informative way. What is Existentialism, anyway? Existentialism is both often misunderstood and has had a considerable cultural impact; many existentialist philosophers are icons. Rather than examining any particular philosopher, this class will look over the common themes of different ideas classed as "Existentialism." The class will be about half presentation and half discussion. So, it will be a great place to share views. This is a big subject and we'll hardly scratch the surface. I look forward to learning with you!

Each participant will be given a whistle. Let's talk about Homestuck: Meme Edition Listen, it's 2020. If you don't know what Homestuck is by this point, you never will and probably are perfectly fine with that. However, as a student at Reed, I believe it is important to make sure that I ~spread knowledge~ whenever I can. Sallying Forth: Don Quixote and the Healing Power of Theater This workshop is designed to be a Paideia class that will also assist me in critical research for my thesis project, where I delve into the healing of trauma using the performing arts. The purpose of the class is to show people the power of theater and the examination of the actor-audience relationship in the context of healing and processing emotion and trauma. The course will involve a discussion on the process of theater, an analysis of a written scene that explores the ideas as mentioned above inspired by Cervantes' Don Quixote, followed up by a performance of the work for the class. Then, after observation of the emotional effects of the piece, adjustments suggested by both the "workshoppers" and myself will be applied. The overall goal is to show the class attendants all the different ways theater can be used to explore those issues, that art can transcend traditional structure, and that I can gather critical data for use inside my thesis. Reed in the Sixties Civil Rights, Viet Nam, JFK, a rock band, a drunken fist fight, a haunted Reed house, This class will portray the atmosphere at Reed in the mid-nineteen sixties. Writing and Understanding Stand Up Comedy (day 1) The purpose of this class is to provide people with the tools to write and perform stand up comedy. Specifically, I will focus on the philosophy and psychology of comedy and dissect popular stand up routines to give people a grounding. I will then use those theories to create a good framework / template that people can use for jokes.

Circles and Cancel Culture We recognize cancel culture stems from a desire to hold people accountable. But does it achieve this goal? The Restorative Justice Coalition is providing a space for a conversation about cancel culture and its effects. Using the restorative practice of circles, we want to give the Reed community an opportunity to unpack what comes with calling someone out, and explore how harm is never an isolated incident. This circle will be about building relationships while also discussing how we approach justice at Reed.

Compulsory Heterosexuality 101 Have you heard the term "compulsory heterosexuality" on the Internet, but don't know exactly what it means? Maybe you've even started using it, figuring you've picked up enough clues from context? Or maybe you've heard it referenced in class, but haven't had the time or energy to go back and read the original theory? Maybe you've never heard this phrase, and want to find out what it means! This class will start from the very beginning of the idea with Adrienne Rich's seminal essay, going over its theoretical starting point, before presenting some of the different ways compulsory heterosexuality has manifested and been (mis)interpreted over the years. After a 30-min presentation, there will be a

Reed Alumni Career Coaches Stop by this informal open office hours to talk with Reed alumni about anything career related, such as tips about resume writing, brainstorming professional areas, networking, or to hear about how alumni approached job searches and lessons learned along the way. Reed Coaches are here to help! Students and alumni of any vintage are welcome to attend. How Facial Recognition Systems Work We live in a world that is monitored with cameras and mobile phones, captured forever in downlobbies of

government-owned data centers. My goal in this class to talk about one of the underlying technologies: facial recognition. It is the problem of identifying and verifying people by their faces. A task so trivially performed by humans is extremely hard for a computer to do. We will talk about state-of-the-art heuristics that are helping computers to get just as good at it. We will also talk about some sad and gloriously stupid ways these heuristics have failed us, and what innovation remains to be done. I'm working hard to make sure that the class is just enough technical, but not too much. It is open to people with all levels of experience! I plan to have live experiments and demonstrations to hammer home some of the key ideas presented in the class. Hello World! In All Languages "Hello World" is the first thing you learn to write in a new programming language. We'll just go through as many different programming languages' "Hello World"s as we can in the time. If you can't write Hello World in a language, you can't program in it - so to be as (computer) multilingual as possible, write as many Hello Worlds as possible! right?

Do you have a favorite poem in that language? Following Spivak, this course will provide you with the opportunity to become deeply intimate with the poem through the practice of translation. The session will be divided into two parts: In the first part, we will read and discusses some influential

theories of translation. We will also read and discuss multiple English translations of a famous poem from a non-English language. Then in the second half, each participant will translate a poem of their choice, originally in a non-English language, into English. The goal will be to produce 2-3 different translations, share them with the group, and appreciate and celebrate the linguistic diversity in our community. Geology of Reed and Eastside Portland: Volcanoes, Earthquakes, and Ice-Age Floods Portland has a dramatic geological past: volcanoes, earthquakes, and terrifying ice-age floods. Learn how this geology shaped both Portland and Reed's history and what we should expect in the future. Lecture by Paul Edison-Lahm, Past-president and Fellow of the Geological Society of the Oregon Country; Reed '83. Missed Connections: Community, Anonymity, and the Stories We Tell We'll be reading (and writing) Missed Connections, discussing community, connection, anonymity, and loneliness at Reed by partaking in parts of interpersonal experience procedures. Biohacking Sleep Learn about circadian rhythms, and the importance of light and food timing. Explore some of the functions of sleep, including tissue regeneration, memory consolidation, and behavioral enhancement. We will explore the link between cellular metabolism, circadian rhythms, and the physiology of synchronized brainwaves. There will be an emphasis on how to control the timing of supplements, food intake, light exposure, and exercise for better sleep. Lecture/conference Not Your Mother's Macaroni Art Remember the days of glitter, Elmer's glue, and macaroni? The cute but slightly sad works of art you proudly took home to your parents, their forced smiles and awe at the piece of harshly colored trash you just handed them? It's the same, except we're not in pre-school anymore! Come by and make a beautiful (or not) work of macaroni art. Crafting supplies and tunes will be provided! The Most Popular Drink in the World: The History, Science, and Culture of Tea Tea, Cha, Te, or Chai — whatever you call it, this drink has spread wildly to become the world's most popular drink, more than just hot leaf juice. Come with us for a brief survey of the history of tea. At lightning speed, we will cover the most important beats on how tea came to be, the differences between different types of tea, and tips on how you can get the most out of your tea drinking experience. Questions are welcome and samples of tea will be provided for tasting. (Lecture/Food Tasting/Demonstration) Reed Stories with Cricket This is a regular "only at Paideia" highlight: stories from the Reed Oral History Project of Reed students from the 1920s to not so long ago - funny...poignant...quirky...dark. Come hear your family history from a master storyteller who herself hosted more than 40 gatherings of Reed alumni telling their stories - so she heard many of these stories in person. Digital Fabrication - CAD, 3D Printing, and Laser Cutting In this class you'll learn a few of the tools and techniques of digital fabrication. We'll design something using 3D CAD software (Fusion 360), make it with our Ultimaker 3D printers, and then cut and engrave acrylic using our 80W Rayjet laser cutter. This introduction will provide enough information to get you started designing and making things of your

own for classes, research, or personal projects. Science of Houseplants Many people don't know or understand how to care for plants, ending up with only wilted sadness, an emptier wallet, and a sense of guilt. This Paideia class aims to teach people indoor gardening/plant care starting with the basics of light, water, and nutrients. An overview of the biological causes and mechanisms of photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation, water potentials, and cavitation will couple with demonstrations and advice on how to research & purchase plants, when to water, optimal lighting, figuring out drainage/micronutrients/fertilizer/salts/pH/soil testing, how to repot when rootbound, pollination/flowering & propagation, how to handle blights/pests, harvesting, and plant disposal. The class should include a practical demonstration of propagating/starting plants in 3 different ways & will send participants home with the skills to make their new plant starters grow! History of American Musical Theater A crash course on musical theater in America from the years 1643 to 2019. We’ll discuss how the genre shifted over time from operas and operettas to the modern Broadway musical, and how to define the different eras of musical theater. We’ll be talking about landmark productions like Oklahoma! and Fiddler on the Roof, as well some famous writers and writing duos like Sondheim and Rodgers & Hammerstein, and how these productions and people influenced the landscape as a whole. Additionally, we will be tracking motifs within certain styles, shows, and even writing teams, and if available, we would be using a piano to play those out for students. It will be mostly a lecture-style class with a few group discussion moments when we talk about specific songs and productions. Irish Penny Whistle for Beginners Students will learn to play the D and G scale on a tin whistle and will then be taught a variety of simple tunes. Each participant will be given a whistle. From Sheep to Sweater Have you wondered how clothing is made? This class will give you hands on experience with how raw fiber is turned into cloth, with a focus on wool. Learn new skills, take some samples home, and talk about many aspects of fiber processing at the commercial to hobby level. Introduction to Japanese For people who are into anime but have always felt frustrated by the need to look at subtitles, this class is for you. Over the course of two hours I hope to teach the class some basic phrases and the pronunciation of Japanese characters. The goal is for the student to be able to, in the event of being randomly dropped in Japan, they would be able to have their basic needs accounted for.
