DG Message

22018-2019 DG Monthly Newsletter August Issue

Dear All Club leaders and Rotarians,

Hello every Rotarians. It seems a flash in seconds for having passed the first two months of our new Rotary Year.I feel much gifted that most of our Club leaders are so well aware of both the RI and local year focus that all have geared up the steps in achieving these strategic goals, especially in membership.

As August is the month focusing on Membership and New Club Development, we are glad that we have achieved in many clubs a net gain in membership. This is not easy. With all of our clubs’ endeavour in this simple but most important focus, that is Net Gain in membership in each club, we can Achieve further more.

Thank you all Club Leaders indeed.

Moreover, we walk on two legs. For membership growth, we also need to encourage forming more new clubs, from good quality people especially from our Rotaractors.

RI President Barry Rassin has called upon to work harder to make Rotaractors our vital force in Rotary.

Hence, District has developed a Rotaract Support Fund for sponsoring our Rotaractors in attending RI Convention, career buildup platform, and supporting those clubs mainly formed from Rotaractors.

We hope we can do further more in fostering our Rotaractors.

We are far from being at the finishing line. Keep on and concentrate to strengthen our clubs by building our clubs a Family out of our own Family.Rotarians, one simple but mostly needed to strengthen our clubs is simply Be There. Engage in every club meeting and activities. You Are Needed.

Engage Rotarians as our Customers:Engage them with Rotary knowledge in DLDA sessions. Engage them with the new ideas that may come along with our new members.

Rotary is to Serve, making our World a better place to live.

And District Governor is to Serve, making our District a stronger Unity to strive.

Thank you all again!

Best from my Heart,Dr. YC HODistrict Governor 2018-19

MEMBERSHIP

Message from District Membership Committeeby PDG Eugene FONG

August is Rotary’s Membership and New Club Development Month. We would like to take this opportunity to remind our readers how important a healthy membership base is to the Rotary movement, and what each of us can do to make Rotary stronger, so that humanity can be better served.

We shall start with examining this year’s Rotary Citation which recognizes Rotary clubs that support the various strategic priorities of Rotary International. Our clubs now have the full Rotary year to achieve the citation‘s goals.

While there are multiple goals that fall in the area of membership, we need to highlight that one of them is “Sponsor or co-sponsor a new Rotary club”. Co-sponsoring a new club means that Rotary clubs can bring together their expertise and resources to nurture one new club. Co-sponsoring will mean less burden to a particular club and may open up a web of opportunities for future cooperation.

Rotary International President Barry Rassin has reminded us in his message that “even within our clubs, many Rotarians don’t know enough about Rotary to take full advantage of what Rotary membership offers”. It really is the responsibility for each of us to explain the value of Rotary membership to non-Rotarians and new Rotarians while District Officers and Club Presidents should ensure that all information relating to how our members in general can enjoy Rotary is made available to our members in a timely manner. Rotary knowledge and training, as well as members’ benefits program like Rotary Global Reward, should be regularly featured in district and club events.

This year, clubs can achieve Rotary Citation with Presidential Distinction by completing three additional goals which include “Achieve a net gain of 5 or more members”, and “Initiate or continue a… program to enhance members’ skills and the value of their membership”. RI has set it very clear that membership is its top priority and shown that it has put in a lot of efforts analyzing how our membership base can be strengthened.

For D3450, DG YC would like to see more satellite clubs being set up in this Rotary year and has set up the New Club Academy to look after the formation and nurturing of new clubs and satellite clubs. District Membership Committee will work closely with all clubs to achieve the goals set by RI and our DG YC.

MEMBERSHIPGood examples of club meeting to attract more guests

by DS Peter PANG

How to let more non-Rotarians know what Rotary is?

This question was all along in her mind from our 18-19 President of Rotary Club of Lan Kwai Fong, Vicky Woo, while she was still a PE. In her first regular meeting of the president year, she invited PDG David Harilela to share a topic “Giving Back”. We intended to invite more non-Rotarians to attend the meeting as part of our new member recruitment plan.

Having the effect from signature preson, and many friends wish to support the new president, we are so grateful when that eventually there were 36 guests attending to the meeting. Many of them were the first time in Rotary,

Audience were all focused and touched by the inspirational sharing. Hunger was not an issue among audience even we started our dinner at 9pm.

We are so grateful to hear from our non-Rotarians guests who reflected that:

- Now I know more about Rotary Club...- I like to help, how?- I make new friends and enjoyed the night- I like to come back

One of the guests told us that she has attended Rotary meetings many times, but this time she really knows what Rotary is.

To quote from PDG David“please do what good we canin what capacity and time frame we are comfortable with”.

FELLOWSHIPAttendance matters: Rules for make-up

by PDG Eugene FONGSome of the readers may be not aware of the attendance requirements specified in Article 12 of the Standard Constitution of Rotary Club (the “SCRC”) which says, “each member should attend this club’s regular meetings, or satellite club’s regular meetings… and engage in this club’s service projects, other events and activities…” And non-attendance can lead to termination of Rotary membership as Article 15, Section 4 of the SCRC prescribes that “A member must (1) attend or make up at least 50 percent of club regular meetings or satellite club meetings, or engage in club projects, other events and activities for at least 12 hours in each half of the year, or a proportionate combination of both; (2) attend at least 30 percent of this club’s regular meetings or satellite club meetings, or engage in club projects, other events and activities in each half of the year... If a member fails to attend as required, the member’s membership may be subject to termination unless the board consents to such non-attendance for good cause.”

There are many ways in which a member can make up for an absence, during the period 14 days before or after the meeting, under Article 12 of the SCRC. These include: “(1) attends at least 60 percent of the regular meeting of another club, of a satellite club meeting of another club, or of a provisional club; or (2) attends a regular meeting of a Rotaract or Interact club, Rotary Community Corps, or Rotary Fellowship or of a provisional Rotaract or Interact club, Rotary Community Corps, or Rotary Fellowship; or (3) attends a convention of RI, a council on legislation, an international assembly, a Rotary institute…, a Rotary district conference, a Rotary district training assembly…, any district committee meeting held by direction of the district governor, or a regularly announced intercity meeting of Rotary clubs;…or (5) attends and participates in a club service project or a club-sponsored community event or meeting authorized by the board; or (6) attends a board meeting or, if authorized by the board, a meeting of a service committee to which the member is assigned; or (7) participates through a club website in an interactive activity requiring an average of 30 minutes of participation.” Attendance is important for Rotary fellowship, and we sincerely hope that all readers can read and abide by the aforementioned rules.
