was composed by Beethoven in 1812 at the suggestion of his friend, Franz Xaver Glöggl, music director at the cathedral in Linz. These compositions, written for four trombones, were transcribed forfour voices and sung at Beethoven’s funeral. Beethoven was the first composer to use trombones in anorchestral composition, his “Fifth Symphony.” is a popular transcriptionfor trombones of a chorus from Haydn’s oratorio, “Creation.” is based uponthe tune most often used with this hymn, which can be found in our Hymnal No. 517.

Born in Kansas and a longtime resident of Texas, she recently married and now lives inMartinsville, Virginia. is an American folk hymn with many variations, often sung bymothers of sons who had gone off to war. “A Mom’s Journey”Message #2 in series:

Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that youmay live long n the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

II. “Honor” means . . .

A. ______________________________________________________________Zephaniah 3:19-20 “At that time I will deal with all who oppressed you; I will rescue thelame and gather those who have been scattered. I will give them praise and honor inevery land where they were put to shame. At that time I will gather you; at that time Iwill bring you home. I will give you honor and praise among all the peoples of the earthwhen I restore your fortunes before your very eyes,” says the LORD.

B. _______________________________________________________________Revelation 5:12-13 “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth andwisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” Then I heard every creature inheaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing:“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory andpower, for ever and ever!”

C. _______________________________________________________________Matthew 15:4-8 “For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curseshis father or mother must be put to death.' But you say that if a man says to his fatheror mother, 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devotedto God,' he is not to 'honor his father ' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for thesake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.'”
