Aaron came run- ning into the kitchen, “Mom, come and see!” Aaron’s mother immediately dropped what she was doing to witness Joey’s latest discov- ery in his backyard safari. Monique rushed back on the trail to her waiting father, “Dad, the waterfall is amaz- ing. Come and see!” Her dad breathed deeply and chuckled, “Give me a minute. Let me catch my breath. I’m not as young as I used to be.” Monique sat beside her father and waited patiently. Finally, he took her by the hand and nodded. She danced with joy and shouted, “Yes! Come and see!” From childhood days, we have invited oth- ers to celebrate the discoveries of life. Come and see! Come and enjoy! It’s just that simple. In our story, Jesus invites Philip. Then, Philip invites Nathanael. Each invites because there is a deep desire to share good news with others. In this case, the good news is Jesus Christ himself. This is the one whom Philip and Nathanael have been waiting for since they began studying and understanding the scriptures. In this passage there are several invitations. Jesus invites Philip to follow him. Philip responds favorably and extends an invita- tion to Nathanael. But Philip’s invitation is met with doubt and suspicion. Nathanael is hesitant to respond to the invitation to come and see Jesus, so Jesus goes to Nathanael. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to have an attitude of inviting others to “come and see” just as we have received the invitation. Prayer Christ, thank you for inviting me to know, love, and follow you. Send me to invite oth- ers to come and see you. Amen. Connections St. Matthew Lutheran Church – Connecting Faith With Life! Stephen MinistryJanuary is the month when we look at our life’s journeyand rejoice over the gift of another year given to us. Theperception of life that enables us to walk into a new yearwith this hope and confidence is the perception that wecan begin anew, that we are constantly being offeredfresh beginnings by God.Imagine clean, white fluffy snow falling, covering allthe drab spots of deadness on the earth. See that samesoft, clean whiteness fall into your heart. Feel it heal thewounds, making clean your dreams and your hopes.Hear the God of new beginnings speak to you about the fresh start being offered. Here is a prayer to start the New Year:Loving God, it is time to turn again to you. It is time to realize anew that I am nottotally self-reliant. This is a moment full of grace that invites me to lift up my spiritto you, the one who gives freshness, the one who moves across my heart like a newsnowfall and erases all the drab, brown memories of a year gone by.Come to meet me, God of life, reach into the mystery of my self. Take me into theheart of this year and give me the confidence to journey freely, lovingly, with risk, wonder and laughter. Amen.

From the book: Fresh Bread And Other Gifts of Spiritual Nourishment by Joyce Rupp.If you would like to meet with a Stephen Minister, please contact Pastor Bob, PastorMaggie or Mike Krumwiede, STM Stephen Minister coordinator.
