Family Picnic - August 12, 2017

Nostalgia is a good thing at our age. Re-

member the picnics or camping outings at

the Control Data camp grounds. It is

great to revisit the old site and remember

those years while we enjoy the present.

Well, we are going to do it one more time.

After a year away, this year’s picnic returns

to the campground and the emphasize re-

turns to the family aspect. Let’s go back

one more time and live in that past. You

can enjoy the picnic, the beauty and activi-

ty of the park in one visit.

So gather the kids, grandkids or great

grandkids and let’s have an old fashion pic-

nic and a romp in the park – you can even

camp if you like. Come early – stay late

and make more memories. Mark your cal-

endar and submit your registration. A fly-

er is enclosed in this newsletter and more

information will be available in future ones.

BUS TRIPS

If you prefer to drive to an event rather than take the bus when a bus is provided, the cost is still the same. You need to make a special note on your reservation form so we do not reserve a seat on the bus. You can meet up with the group at the designated time and place.

BUS TRIP PARKING

For all one-day trips involving a bus, a parking area on the NORTHEAST corner of Creekside Community Center (98th Street and Newton Avenue South) has been designated for

Ceridian retirees.

Lyle Miller

When entering the Ceridian headquar-

ters for the past fifteen years, club mem-

bers have been greeted by Lyle, who

held both security and receptionist du-

ties. Lyle was a very friendly, considerate

and helpful person. He was transferred

to a new site and will be missed. Chuck

Woldum represented the Retirees Club

with best wishes and a fond fairwell for

Lyle.

Looking for something new to do? Visit Mall of America

There’s a relatively new attraction (one year old) to give you a virtual flight across the country. Fly Over America is only a 10 mi-nute event that will give you the feel-ing of a helicopter ride over beautiful scenery. See page 9 for more infor-mation.

SEPARATE CHECKS, PLEASE

Techie Questions from Members Do you have any specific questions about technology or something specific you would like to see covered in this column? Send your suggestions, questions, and comments to the club at [email protected]. We will try to address them in future issues.

I thought I would start out this month by telling you about the new techie we have in our midst. You all know Chuck Woldum. He calls me frequently to either ask about what’s new at Ceridian or to ask a technical ques-tion. Last week he calls and says his printer isn’t working and that he is getting a message that the carriage is stuck. I gave him some suggestions to try and while he was trying them I did some research on-line and found a few more things to try. So when he called back and indicated that the first suggestions didn’t work I gave him a couple more things to try. When he called back and indicated that none of them worked he mentioned he had another printer and I suggested that he swap them out. Later he calls and said the original printer was working. I asked what happened and he said he just hit it and it starting printing out all his documents. The next day he calls again all enthused and said it was failing again but after he hit it again it started working. So if you need some technical help you might want to check with Chuck and see if he can help.

Now for a caution if you use Amazon to purchase items:

Hackers hit Amazon.com! Beware of fake deals

Before you make your next Amazon purchase, please be aware that not everything you can buy on its site is

sold or fulfilled by Amazon directly. The Amazon Marketplace is also populated with third-party sellers that

sell and ship their own goods. These are seller accounts that utilize Amazon's platform, customer reach and

search tools to peddle their own wares.

While Amazon tries its best to police its third-party sellers from scamming customers or from selling coun-

terfeit goods, there's a troubling ploy that has been spreading in recent weeks.

According to The Wall Street Journal, hackers are taking over third-party Amazon Marketplace seller ac-

counts to post non-existent items and fake deals, stealing tens of thousands of dollars from customers and

sellers alike.

As a shopper, to protect yourself from Amazon Marketplace scams (and online shopping scams, in gen-

eral), avoid items and deals that seem too good to be true. If a seller is offering deep discounts on a popular item, it's most likely bogus. For added security on Amazon.com, only buy items that are sold or fulfilled by

Amazon (typically labeled with the "Prime" logo).

West Side Story

By Gloria Cumming

On April 8th, 32 retirees and 7 guests attended this show at Ordway

Theater. This stage play celebrates 60 years this year (1957). New York

City’s West Side was a vibrant battleground in the 1950s. In the midst

of the deep-seated rivalry between Puerto Rican gang, the Sharks, and

the white gang, the Jets, Maria and Tony discover that ancient grudges

are no match for their true love. However, they refuse to back down

and the “rumbles,” romance and resentment lead the bloody path to

the lovers’ ultimate, tragic conclusion with soaring, sophisticated and

diverse melodies and energetic dance battles. This is a remarkably sali-

ent social message. West Side Story remains one of American musical

theater’s most revolutionary and most loved treasures. It was beauti-

fully done — the acting, dancing, singing and music.

Spring Luncheon

By Chuck Woldum

Saturday, April 1 was our Spring Luncheon at Mystic Lake for 185 retirees and

their guests. Again the dining room was very nicely decorated, the food deli-

cious (even though the chicken picatta tasted like pork), and the entertainment

by “The Swamp Kings” was enjoyed. Attendees got the chance to meet old

friends and overall it was a pleasant afternoon. The only negative comment is

that 10 percent of those who made reservations did not attend.

Fly Over America – Mall of America Coordinator: Dave Moen 952-846-8451

This exciting “ride” is only one year old and is a must-see attraction. Riders are suspended in the air with feet

dangling 10-40 feet above the ground and immersed in a giant half-spherical dome screen. Once your seat belt is

fastened, special effects including wind, scents and mist make you feel like you’re truly flying across America, from

the east coast to the west, in an open helicopter. You can expect to spend up to 30 minutes at Fly Over Ameri-

ca, including the 10 minute ride. Some steps are involved to get to your seat. Two of our board members

highly recommend this adventure for our seniors.

Discounted price for active members: $9.00 LIMIT 4 tickets

Tickets are good for one year, and will be mailed end of June unless sold out.

Additional tickets can be purchased on your own at the site for:

Adult (13+) $16.95 plus tax

Child (12 and under) $12.95 plus tax *

Children must be at least 48 inches tall or eight years old.
