FALL LUNCHEON

A reservation form for this event is included in this newsletter. Again, the Club’s Board has a great luncheon and program planned. You will truly enjoy this annual event again.

CLUB MEMBERSHIP

Our campaign to recruit more members continues. Please remember that the Club’s Board asks for your help in this program. If you know of CDC retirees who are not club members, tell them what the Club does for current members and what it could do for them. Ask them to call the Club office at 952-853-6562 to learn if they are eligible. The Club realizes old age, health problems and deaths are the main reasons for this lower membership and the Club also knows there are eligible retirees who for one reason or another have not become members.

SUMMER PICNIC

An article on this year’s picnic is a part of this newsletter, which gives you the highlights of this year’s event. The picnic was held at the Battle Creek Regional Park in Maplewood, a very nice venue, one that many of the attendees thought should be our new picnic site. How-ever, by a vote of hands, most favored a return to the St. Croix Park next year. Those of you who were there can compare the two sites and inform the Club if in your opinion it is time to contin-ue researching sites closer to the cities. For your information, the deal CDC made with St. Croix Park to have free access to the park ends in 2021. We would welcome your suggestions and comments on making this picnic a success once again.

Interest in the Gopher football games is very low and there was an error in the schedule. The corrected schedule is printed on the Gopher drawing form en-

closed.

CRITICS CORNER

Saint Paul Saints Baseball, July 27, 2016

by Dave Moen

You have all heard the familiar baseball phrase of “3 strikes and you’re out.” Well, I have now gone to 3 games at CHS Field in St. Paul to watch the Saint Paul Saints and have been rained on each game. This report on the game against the Sioux City Ex-plorers should be short and easy to write, but no, not this game.

Here is the “good news, bad news” for this event.

Bad news: 1) this was the last home day game and the Retiree’s Club got the last 25 seats available that were in a block; other than a few single seats scattered throughout the stadium, the game was sold out. We immediately had 20 retirees each re-quest 2 tickets and nobody wanted the single ticket, so there was a wait list. 2) parking: I have at least 6 different routes to get from Burnsville to downtown St Paul. Every major street in St Paul seems to be under construction as well as most of the routes into downtown. Every parking lot or ramp within walking distance to CHS Field was full so we proceeded to Lexington and Dale streets, parked the car, and hopped on the next light rail train to downtown with time to spare before the game started. The local weather report at 10 pm on the station I watched Tues-day evening called for a “sparse chance of spotty showers” for Wed. p.m. As we approached downtown there was a brief but heavy down pour. We arrived at the stadium at 1:05, the sched-uled start time to find all the fans huddled under the roof and the infield covered with a tarp. The skies started to clear and they uncovered the infield but did not roll up the tarp. Here is a tip for future games: if the ushers aren’t around with cloths to wipe off the seats, go to the rest rooms and keep tripping the button on the paper towel dispensers until you have about a 3 foot section of toweling, enough for one seat. Of course you have to hope that the towel dispensers are refilled quickly. Anyway, another storm was approaching and the tarp recovered the infield just as it started to rain. At this point it was now 2:30 and the earliest the game could start would be 3 p.m. We had another event to attend so we decided to leave along with several thousand other

fans.

Good news: The game did start about 3 p.m., however, there was another 1 ½ hour rain delay in the bottom of the 3rd inning. This turned out to be one of the shortest games played all sea-son—just 2:09 of playing time, however, with the late start and rain delay, it turned out to be the longest game of the year. The

final score was St Paul 1 and the Sioux City Explorers 0.

CHS Field is a beautiful baseball stadium and a fun place to be. Before the game started I counted 15 of our 25 seats taken. I have no idea if the remaining 10 were hiding under the roof, are still looking for a

place to park, or watched a different weather forecast than I

did and decided not to venture out. If there is a long, hot, dry

spell next summer just send me 2 tickets to a Saints game and I will try to maintain my record of rain on game day.

SUMMER PICNIC By Judy Moss

Saturday, August 13 was a perfect day for a picnic. The Battle Creek Regional Park in Maplewood was well-accommodating for this year’s event. The large pavilion with two kitchens, plenty of bathrooms, lots of picnic ta-bles and plenty of free parking were inviting. Approxi-mately 150 retirees and their families enjoyed a great lunch catered by Mintahoe, which included chicken, hot dogs, brats, hamburgers, potato salad and much more. This year we were entertained by Gary Polyczak’s accor-dion music. Bingo, emceed by Guy Moore, was an an-nual highlight with $5 prizes for winning games. Twenty-seven retirees names were drawn for cash prizes as well. Miniature golf, face-painting, black jack tables and pro-fessional photos made the day festive. The annual pic-nic is one of our more costly events. Hope you enjoyed it

THE LION KING

By Linda Hauck

Sixty retirees and guests attended this lively stage ad-aptation of the Academy Award-winning 1994 Disney film. The Lion King is the story of a young lion prince living in the flourishing African Pride Lands. Born into the royal family, precocious cub Simba spends his days exploring the sprawling savanna grasslands and idoliz-ing his kingly father, Mufasa, while youthfully shirking the responsibility his position in life requires. When an unthinkable tragedy, orchestrated by Simba’s wicked uncle, Scar, takes his father’s life, Simba flees the Pride Lands, leaving his loss and the life he knew behind. Eventually companioned by two hilarious and unlikely friends, Simba starts anew. But when weight of respon-sibility and a desperate plea from the now ravaged Pride Lands come to find the adult prince, Simba must take on a formidable enemy, and fulfill his destiny to be king. A vibrant and exciting tale from the great creatives at Disney, The Lion King is a story of love and redemp-tion that nobody should miss. This was my third time to see this performance. The characters, costumes and music by Elton John never cease to amaze me.

Thanks to those that continue to sign up to receive the newsletter electronically. We really appreciate it. Techie Questions from Members Do you have any specific questions about technology or something specific you would like to see covered in this column? Send your suggestions,

questions, and comments to the club at [email protected]. We will try to address them in future issues.

I found this article about keeping Windows 7 running smoothly. I know everybody didn’t upgrade to Windows 10 so I thought I would include a con-

densed version of the article for those of you that stayed on Windows 7.

Windows 7 is far from a dead operating system

There are many perfectly good and legitimate reasons to pass on Windows 10 and stick with the tried and true Windows 7. Some users worry about potential privacy issues with Microsoft's newest OS; others have older hardware and software that can't make the transition. And many Win7

users simply see no need to have the hot new thing.

Microsoft won't give Win7 new features, going forward, but the now venerable OS will get security fixes until Jan. 14, 2020 (assuming you're on

Service Pack 1).

Given the millions of systems currently running Win7, third-party support shouldn't be an issue anytime soon. New software should run on the OS and peripherals such as printers should continue to come with Win7 drivers. And if you're a hard-core Windows Media Center user, Windows 10 is

not an option.

With that said, here's our guide to keeping Windows 7 running for the next few years,

Keep Win7 systems backed up and your data safe

The time to think about a backup strategy isn't, obviously, after something goes seriously wrong. Unfortunately, many of us have learned the hard

way that our backup systems were lacking or faulty.

Not only do you want to make sure you're creating backups, you need to thoroughly test them to ensure you can do both partial and full recoveries. Yes, good backups are important for all systems. But with diminishing support for Win7 and the rapid rise of ransomware attacks, it's especially

critical for Win7 users.

Keep Win7 running smoothly for years

Just as important as protecting your setup and data is keeping the Windows system clean and trouble free. It's like maintaining that beloved but

aging car (or truck, in my case). Regular servicing will make it run like new for years to come.

"Regular" is the operative word, here; doing repairs after something seriously goes wrong will be more time consuming and possibly expensive.

Security: Lock down your Win7 system

As mentioned above, Microsoft will continue to release Windows 7 fixes until 2020. But based on recent history, most of those patches will be secu-rity updates. That's well and good, but it's entirely possible that future hunts for new Win7 vulnerabilities will not be as thorough. Over time, the

chances of being successfully attacked could increase.

That means it's more important than ever to keep your entire system — Windows, applications, browsers, and so forth — fully up to date. And along

with your full-time anti-malware software, you'll want to run regular scans with standalone AV products.

Prepare for rebuilding Windows 7 from scratch

For various reasons, there might come a time when you must or wish to create a Win7 system from the foundation up. You might want to move it to

new hardware or possibly put it on a virtual PC.

To prepare for that possibility, make sure you have in hand a Windows 7 installation disc — preferably one with Win7 SP1—, a system-rescue/

restore disc, keys for all applications, and your operating-system key. Keep them in a safe place and update them as needed.

Endnote: Microsoft claims that Windows 10 is the best OS ever, but many happy Win7 users will stick with what they know. And that's perfectly

okay. Microsoft can't force you to upgrade, though some who suddenly found Win10 on their systems would disagree. In any case, it's your

system, and it should be good for at least another five years — or until you're forced to purchase a new system.

The good news: Those MS nag screens for updating to Windows 10 should end in the next few days.
