SEMINAR LOCATION AND TIMES
All seminars, with the exception of AARP Smart Driver Course, are held at 9:00 a.m. at the Creekside Community Center 9801 Penn Avenue South in Bloomington (the corner of 98th and Penn Avenue South). There is a large parking lot at this site, and re-

A LETTER FROM THE CLUB PRESIDENT
It has been a privilege to serve as President of the Control Data/
Ceridian Retirees Club this past year.
This has been a fantastic year for our members and guests to at-tend over 60 events and 14 seminars during 2015. The various events offered allowed over 3,200 members and guests to attend a wide range of activities held at theaters, ball parks, museums and other facilities. There were four major events that over 1,000 peo-ple enjoyed this year, which were, the Spring and Fall Luncheons at Mystic Lake Casino, the fall picnic and Christmas party. The seminars were attended by over 500 people. The topics of these seminars were very popular and usually filled to capacity, especial-
ly the AARP driver courses.
As President I was very fortunate to have had an excellent group of people on the Board to provide you with the services of a great Club. I must give an extra special thanks to various Board mem-bers who have spent a great deal of time to make this possible. They are: Chuck Woldum and Judy Moss, our executives, Linda Hauck and John Janes (Newsletter), Tom Moore (Membership), Guy Moore (Golf and AARP), George Madich (Seminars) and Nan-cy Dostal (Secretary and Historian). I must also thank the remain-ing Board members who have worked very hard and many hours for your entertaining pleasure. This coming year the Board will remain the same and will continue their efforts for another suc-
cessful year. Say Hi to them the next time you attend an event.
Again, I thank you for allowing me to be your Club President
Best regards,
John Jaros
2016 EVENTS
As stated in last month’s newsletter, the Club is going to schedule fewer events in 2016. Three to four social events and one to two seminars a month will be scheduled. This lower event cost will not likely occur as event cost reduction
funds will remain in the Club’s treasury so the Club’s life can
be extended.

2015 HOLIDAY PARTY
Saturday, December 12 was another snow-less day, great for holiday party attendees. More than 300 retirees and their guests attended our annual party at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Bloomington. The hall was decorated with many lights, and the 14-piece orchestra played holiday music and many numbers for dancing. The buffet was well received, and peppermint ice cream topped off the meal. Control Data/Ceridian retirees (or spouses of deceased club members) received a Swiss Colony
sausage and cheese assortment, and one member at each ta-ble took home the poinsettia centerpiece as an extra gift.
This party had more attendees than any one event in our club’s history. Thanks to all the board members who con-tributed their time to make this a memorable evening.

SILVER BELLS & DIAMONDS
SHELDON THEATER IN RED WING By Dave Moen
Friday November 13th was cold and blustery—a great day to ride in a warm motor coach to Red Wing, MN and see Silver Bells & Diamonds at the historic Sheldon Theater. We arrived at the St. James Hotel for lunch just as 3 other coaches arrived, and each of the 4 coaches was full with 56 riders. The hotel has multiple lunchrooms and easily accommodated everyone. Our lunch consisted of soup, salad, choice of wrap sandwich, chips, cookies and cof-
fee.
The Sheldon Theater was built in 1904 with an $83,000 bequest from Theodore Sheldon, a successful business-man and Red Wing City Council member. When the the-ater was first opened it was described as a ”jewel box” with the interior a celebration of arches, delicate plaster sculptures, decorative painting and other rich detail. In 1936 the theater was renovated to make it more appropri-ate for showing films and much of the original décor was stripped. The theater was closed in the 1970’s. In the 1980’s a renovation project was launched and the Shel-don reopened in 1986 and claims to be the oldest operat-ing theater in MN. The theater seats 466, and for Fri-day’s performance over half of the seats were filled by the
four buses mentioned above.
The classic rock and roll song “Little Darlin’” launched the start of The Diamonds many years ago. One member of the group started in 1973, another in 1991, and the other two in more recent years. The first hour of the show was an energetic performance of classic rock and roll. After the intermission they performed Christmas music. Each of the Diamonds has a special musical talent that comes
together to provide an entertaining performance.
CRITICS CORNER
BEAUTIFUL – THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL By Vicki Bruesehoff
The Carole King Musical is the story of Carole Klein, a
Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah who fought her
way into the record business. It is an inspiring look at
Carole King’s remarkable rise to stardom She wrote her
first number one hit at only 17, “You’ve Got a Friend.” As
a pianist and budding songwriter, the frumpy Carole
meets a handsome, hot guy who is a lyricist. She got
pregnant and he married her. Together they wrote beau-
tiful music and lyrics, but they had their ups and downs.
He proved to be immature and unfaithful but the music
continued on with many hits. In true juke box style that
we Baby Boomers like, groups within the play depict the
Drifters with “Up on the Rooftop,” the Shirelles “Will You
Love Me Tomorrow,” the Righteous Brothers “You’ve
Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” and many more. These num-
bers are nostalgic and bring back memories of the origi-
nal recordings. After a divorce, she goes to California
with her kids and continues in the music business. As
the show closes, we see her performing at Carnegie Hall.
Her ex-husband comes to say he is finally sorry and to
congratulate her. It is a lovely show with good music that
cannot help but leave you smiling at the end.
A DON’T HUG ME CHRISTMAS CAROL by Dean Nerdahl
The New Century Theatre was the setting where 13 retir-ees were entertained by the cast of this play on Sunday, December 6th. The play was a take-off of the Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol” complete with Tiny Tim and the three Ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. The setting was Christmas Eve at a little bar in Bunyan Bay, Minnesota. The dialog was kind of Ole & Lena, but had the right mix of goofiness and clever song lyrics. I thought the actors were all excellent. The play’s creator, Phil Olson, grew up in Edina and now lives in Los Ange-les. He has 14 published plays and has had 300 produc-tions around the world. His brother, Paul, wrote the mu-sic for this play and is a Nephrologist (kidney doctor) in
Chaska.

When I was trying to find something to write about this month I found that most of the things I was looking at were either about Windows 10 or antivirus and malware. Since in 2015 I wrote about those topics a couple of times each I have decid-
ed to make this more general this month.
If you have any questions, please be sure and send them to me as they help me decide what to write about each month.
As I said above I hate to keep writing about the same topics every month.
However, on the subject of Windows 10, I plan on doing the upgrade sometime in January. I figure it is time I take a look at it and see how the upgrade goes so I can better describe for you what you should do when you decide to do the upgrade. I have had people tell me the upgrade went well and other that have had problems. I have a couple of machines at home and will give the upgrade a try on both of them to get a feel for the process. Stay tuned and I will provide you with my expe-
riences.
Relative to antivirus and malware you know I feel that you should have some good software running on your systems to help protect you. The other part of that is that it is important to keep it up to date as well as installing all the monthly up-
dates from vendors like Microsoft, Adobe and Oracle (for Java).
One interesting thing I encountered recently is that neither Firefox nor Chrome supports the latest version of Java. My wife plays games on a site called Pogo and it would not let her play most of the games she wanted to because of this. They were recommending that you run IE11. I switched her back to that and she could again get to all her games. So if you go
to sites that use Java and were using Firefox or Chrome you will probably have problems.
I hope you had a Happy Holidays and are all ready for the new year.

Why Are My Feet So. . . Fragrant?
The bottoms of your feet are teeming with Staphylococcus bacteria, little organisms that break down the substance leucine in sweat to produce isovaleric acid. That’s a compound that makes feet reek, accord-ing to research from the U.K. What’s more, your sweat encourages those bacteria to multiply.
Older people, who tend to be less flexible, often skip a thorough foot scrubbing in the shower, making it more likely that the bacteria fester.
THE FIX
Set your dogs free. Air out your feet by wearing sandals after work or your workout. Letting your feet dry out can help fight the bacteria.
Brew tea for two. If that’s not enough, an astringent foot soak can keep the bacteria at bay, podiatrist Tran suggests. Brewing a strong pot of black tea, allow it to cool and soak your feet in it for 10 minutes a day for a week or so. Another option is to try Domeboro crystals. When the crystals mix with water, they release aluminum acetate, which helps zap sweat and odor.
ACT NOW IF
… this stuff hasn’t work. A dermatologist or podiatrist might discover that a foot fungus is
causing the foul odor.

Thoughts for a Richer Life By Harvey Mackay
I’ve had this little gem tucked away for many years, and I refer to it from time to time to remind myself of what’s
really important. I’ve searched for the source, which I haven’t been able to find, because I’d like to thank the author for
these wonderful lessons.
Here are the original thoughts, followed by my impressions.
The most destructive habit: Worry.
The greatest joy: Giving.
The greatest loss: Loss of self-respect.
The most satisfying work: Helping others.
The ugliest personality trait: Selfishness.
The most endangered species: Dedicated leaders.
Our greatest natural resource: Our youth.
The greatest “shot in the arm”: Encouragement.
The greatest problem to overcome: Fear.
The most effective sleeping pill: Peace of mind.
The most crippling disease: Excuses.
The most powerful force in life: Love.
The most incredible computer: The brain.
The worst thing to be without: Hope.
The deadliest weapon: The tongue.
The two most power-filled words: I can.
The greatest asset: Faith.
The most worthless emotion: Self-pity.
The most beautiful attire: A smile.
The most prized possession: Integrity.
The most contagious spirit: Enthusiasm.
First, let’s talk about worry. Did you know this word is derived from an Anglo-Saxon word that
means to strangle or to choke? People do literally worry themselves to death . . . or heart disease, high
blood pressure, ulcers, nervous disorders and all sorts of other nasty conditions. Worry can destroy your
peace of mind. The best remedy? Remember that tomorrow is a new day, full of promise.
Giving/Helping others – These two go hand in hand. You are always in a position to give, just as
you can always help someone. Never pass up an opportunity to share what you have. Dedicated leaders
understand that they have tremendous power to help those they lead by setting a solid example and demon-
strating the highest standards.

Renee Skoglund, MA, Gerontologist/CEO of Big Dreams, has worked in the field for more than 19 years. Her discussion is about physical health – which makes up only 10% of a person’s health. The social and psychological aspects make up only 60% of a person’s wellbeing. In this talk, you will be reminded how important it is to your physical health to stay socially engaged, laugh and enjoy health.

Selfishness – President Harry Truman summed it up so well: “It is amazing what you can accomplish
if you don't care who gets the credit.” An offshoot of selfishness is self-pity, which no one should waste
time on anyway. Perhaps the worst effect is loss of self-respect. Self-respect is what motivates you to be
the best you can be. And in turn, you can motivate others to be their best.
Encouragement is oxygen to the soul. People appreciate recognition, encouragement and praise.
Offering encouragement based on a person’s character or actions inspires them to perform in such a manner
that invites additional praise. Be careful not to let the tongue undo the positive effects of encouragement.
Use it for good.
Fear – Every crisis we face is multiplied when we act out of fear. When we fear something, we em-
power it. If we refuse to concede to our fear, there is nothing to fear.
Excuses – We all make excuses from time to time. However, the day you stop making them is the
day you will move up in the world.
Hope is what gets many of us through our worst days. Hope is believing that every cloud has a silver
lining, and when that cloud rains, it makes things grow. A perfect partner is faith, for without faith, hope is
meaningless. Love completes this trio. Real power comes through when you love someone or something,
whether it’s a career or a cause.
A smile improves your looks. I learned years ago that one of the most powerful things you can do
to have influence over others is to smile at them. It should be standard equipment for all people.
Integrity: either you have it or you don’t. If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don’t
have integrity, nothing else matters. Doing the right thing is never the wrong thing to do.
Enthusiasm is the spark that ignites our lives. It’s one of the most important attributes to success.
It also leads to an attitude of I can, which provides the confidence required for achievement.
Pass as much encouragement as possible to our youth, the people who will inherit this world. I am
constantly encouraged by the dreams and aspirations of the young people I mentor, and I want them to pass
their experiences to future generations.
Finally, the brain. What a gift we have with our brain. Unlike your computer, it may not perform
rapid-fire complex calculations. But attached to the heart, it can make better decisions and produce infinitely
better results.
