Yong Zhao

Presidential Chair and Associate Dean for Global Education, University of Oregon

World Class Learners: Educating Creative and Entrepreneurial Students The world needs creative and entrepreneurial talents who are globally

competent to take advantage of the opportunities brought about technology and globalization and tackle the tough challenges facing human beings. But our schools are being pushed to produce homogenous, compliant, and employee-minded test-takers, as a result of seductive power of the traditional education paradigm. In this presentation, Dr. Yong Zhao challenges the traditional paradigm, debunks the myth of international tests such as PISA and TIMSS, and proposes a new paradigm of education aimed to cultivate diverse, creative, and entrepreneurial talents.

Dr. Zhao is an internationally known scholar, author, and speaker. His works focus on the implications of globalization and technology on education. He has designed schools that cultivate global competence, developed computer games for language learning, and founded research and development institutions to explore innovative education models.

Distinguished Parent of the Year for CABE 2013 Marisela Lopez Moreno Valley Unified School District Marisela Lopez has demonstrated extraordinary service in the

area of parent and family engagement in many areas. She illustrates a tremendous

passion, conveying knowledge and skills to succeed, equality to move forward, strength to

resist rejection, and the power to make a difference. At Edgemont Elementary, she has been an

ELAC Officer for many years and DELAC President for two years. Additionally, she is a

Parent Trainer of Trainer and Presenter at the District, Regional and State level. As a DELAC President, she is

instrumental in providing parents with a monthly Newsletter that reports activities, district updates, and special unique

messages that support and encourage positive parent engagement. Marisela provides different levels of training to

our MVUSD parents ranging from Riverside County’s Parent Engagement Leadership Initiative where she has trained

at two district-wide trainings and district-wide trainings for ELAC Officers. She has also presented at our

District Parent Summit, RCOE and 23rd PTA Parent Summit and the Regional and State CABE Conferences.

The Moreno Valley Unified School District English Language Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) parent officers will present skills, techniques, strategies and ideas needed to have effective, successful and positive ELAC Meetings. They will share the District ELAC Manual that they use in training parent ELAC Officers for school sites. The MVUSD DELAC Officers will share their experiences and successes in being leaders at the District Level and Site Levels. This workshop will benefit English Learner parents, facilitators, specialists,

Keynote Address

Kenji Hakuta Stanford University School of Education Challenges and Opportunities of the Common Core for California’s ELs: National and Local

Perspectives. The Common Core State Standards and the anticipated Next Generation Science Standards

have generated reform energy that promises to reverberate across the entire educational systemat national, state and local levels. Especially noteworthy is the shift in perspective that greatlyexpands the role of language in content teaching and learning. This presentation will describe thework of Understanding Language, a national initiative that focuses on this shift, and will spotlightsome key national, state and local opportunities that help ELs in attaining the Common Core.Dr. Kenji Hakuta teaches at Stanford University in the School of Education, where he has been on the faculty since 1989, except for three years (2003- 2006) when he served as the founding Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts at UC Merced. He holds an endowed chair as the Lee L.

Jacks Professor. His areas of teaching and research are in the education of English Learners, second language acquisition, education policy and practice, and statistics.

Los comportamientos se aprenden y se desarrollan de acuerdo aprenden su sistema de

valores. Sin una estructura familiar correcta, muchos adolescentes batallan por adquirir habilidades sociales y académicas efectivas. José Luís Orozco Bilingual Educator, Children’s Author and Recording Artist Born in Mexico City, José-Luis Orozco grew fond of music at a young age, learning many songs from his paternal grandmother. At age 8, José-Luis became a member of the Mexico City Boy’s Choir, and traveled the world visiting 32 countries in Europe, the Caribbean, Central and South America. José-Luis Orozco dedicates himself to what he truly enjoys — singing for children. I imagined that a translation of this dynamism and diversity into a simple image using intersecting colors could be powerful.Karisa Morante was born in Anaheim, California in 1986. She received her BA in Art from Chapman University in Orange in 2008. Karisa is currently Associate Director at Francois Ghebaly Gallery in Los Angeles, along with being a full-time artist and graphic designer. I come from a hispanic family and I only have onesibling. I love drawing and painting because I find it to be away to express myself and it offers an escape from reality. Iplan to go to college and major in Art. The reason why I choseto draw this venitian mask was because to me she representsnature. I find nature to be beautiful and depending on yourlocation in the world art is truly the language that speaks to everyone.
