LEGEND (18)25 SEPTEMBER - 1 OCTOBER

Director: Brian Helgeland. Starring: Tom Hardy, Emily Browning, Chazz Palminteri. UK 2015. 131 mins.

With a demonstrably bigger budget than in 1990’s biopic The Krays, Oscar-winning screenwriter Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confi dential, Mystic River) directs this rather different and fascinating take on twin brothers Ronnie and Reggie, who ruled London’s gangland in the late 1950s and ’60s. Intriguingly, Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road) plays both of them. Brian Helgeland concentrates on Reggie’s efforts to curb his brother’s psychopathic tendencies as the pair try to stay out of reach of the long and often corrupt arm of the law. Paying them attention is Angelo Bruno (Chazz Palminteri, The Usual Suspects), who is keen to recruit the pair as the UK branch of the Mafi a. The brothers are wary of this idea, for very different reasons. Their gripping story unfolds in a fi nely nuanced period crime drama with a hefty side order of carnage.

ROGER WATERS THE WALL (12A)PLUS SATELLITE Q&A29 SEPTEMBER

Directors: Sean Evans, Roger Waters. UK 2014. 155 mins.

Roger Waters, co-founder and primary songwriter of Pink Floyd, fuses the epic and the personal in Roger Waters The Wall, a concert fi lm that goes well beyond the stage. Based on the groundbreaking concept album, Roger Waters The Wall could be called a concept fi lm: it’s a state-of-the-art show that dazzles the senses, combined with an intensely personal road trip that deals with the loss Roger has felt throughout his life due to war. Contains infrequent strong language, nudity and bloody moments.

After the fi lm we present The Simple Facts, a unique opportunity to see Roger Waters and his Pink Floyd bandmate Nick Mason – reunited, unscripted, and in conversation to answer questions sent in by you, the fans.

MACBETH (15)9 –15 OCTOBER

Director: Justin Kurzel. Starring: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard. UK/France/USA. 113 mins.

This extraordinary retelling of William Shakespeare’s story of a king driven to murder and madness is presented with remarkable style and vision. Macbeth (Michael Fassbender) is a man of war: we see him in climactic, eye-popping battle scenes. He meets a troupe of witches who foretell his future. His wife, Lady Macbeth (Marion Cotillard), hatches a plot to kill beloved King Duncan and seize his crown by force. The cast give spellbinding performances, bringing Shakespeare’s words chillingly to life.

EVEREST (12A)2 – 8 OCTOBER

Director: Baltasar Kormákur. Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley. UK/USA/Iceland 2015. 121 mins.

This gripping drama is based on a disastrous 1996 expedition when eight climbers lost their lives attempting an ascent on Everest. Two teams led by Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) become trapped after battling vicious

snowstorms and avalanches. A rescue party must engage in a deadly struggle to bring them back. With its spectacular cinematography, Baltasar Kormákur’s (The Deep) edge-of-the-seat thriller maximises the use of Nepal’s mountain vistas.

Contains moderate threat, injury detail and upsetting scenes.

SUFFRAGETTE (12A)16 – 29 OCTOBER

Director: Sarah Gavron.Starring: Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep, Helena Bonham Carter. UK 2015. 106 mins.

The inspiringly kick-ass history of Britain’s early feminist movement is powerfully recreated in Suffragette. Carey Mulligan stars as Maud, a young factory worker who discovers the cause in the early 1900s, eventually becoming

radicalised by a fi erce world of hunger strikes, guerrilla tactics and brutal government reprisals. With its world-class cast and stirring story, Suffragette is not just entertaining, but also vibrant with cultural relevance.

Contains infrequent strong language, moderate violence and a scene of force-feeding.

CRIMSON PEAK (CERT TBC)30 OCTOBER – 5 NOVEMBER

Director: Guillermo del Toro. Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston. USA 2015. TBC mins.

Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) delves into Gothic horror. Mia Wasikowska plays aspiring author Edith Cushing, who moves into the mountaintop mansion of her new husband (Tom Hiddleston). Unfortunately for her, it’s also occupied by malign ghostly entities, which he and his sister (Jessica Chastain) try to conceal. Del Toro proudly claims minimal CGI for his alternately luscious and forbidding sets, with the mansion as much a star as the three accomplished leads.

THE MARTIAN (CERT TBC)

30 OCTOBER – 1 NOVEMBER, 3 – 5 NOVEMBER

Director: Ridley Scott. Starring: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain. USA 2015. TBC mins.

Sci-fi genius Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Prometheus) takes us to Mars for a gripping, action-packed tale of disaster and survival. Based on the bestselling novel by Andy Weir, the story follows a crewed trip to the Red Planet. A devastating Martian storm forces an early evacuation, and astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead – but in fact he’s alive, injured, stranded and alone. Will he ever make it home?

THE PROGRAM (CERT TBC)6 – 12 NOVEMBER

THE LOBSTER (15)6 – 8 & 10 – 12 NOVEMBER

Director: Stephen Frears. Starring: Ben Foster, Chris O’Dowd, Guillaume Canet. UK/France 2015. TBC mins.

Director Stephen Frears’s (Philomena, The Queen) luminously shot new fi lm revolves around seven-time Tour De France victor Lance Armstrong. In this fi ctionalised account, the cyclist (Ben Foster, Contraband) takes to drugs for initially idealistic reasons, but as success follows, the cover-up becomes ever more intricate. The dogged persistence of investigative journalist David Walsh (Chris O’Dowd, Calvary) plays out as a cracking cat-and-mouse story, the whole amounting to a cautionary tale for our times.

Director: Yorgos Lanthimos. Starring: Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Léa Seydoux. Ireland/UK/Greece/France/Netherlands. 118 mins.

This twisted dystopian comedy envisions a society that cannot tolerate unattached adults. When a relationship breaks down, the rejected party has 45 days to fi nd a partner at a country-hotel facility. If unsuccessful, they are transformed into an animal. David (Colin Farrell) escapes the hotel and joins the outcast loner community, but the connection he feels with another exile (Rachel Weisz) then puts the pair in jeopardy. The narrative segues from darkly comic satire to unconventional love story.

NATIONAL THEATRE: OF MICE AND MENENCORE: 19 NOVEMBER, 19:00

ROYAL BALLET: FOUR SHORT BALLETSENCORE: 15 NOVEMBER, 14:00

Director: Sam Mendes. Starring: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Ralph Fiennes. UK/USA 2015. TBC mins.

His fourth outing in the post-Ian Fleming franchise sees Daniel Craig’s James Bond motivated by events deep in his own past to track down and neutralise the dark force known as SPECTRE. Meanwhile, MI6’s Gareth Mallory (Ralph Fiennes) has taken over from Judi Dench as M, and in doing so fi nds himself fi ghting to save a discredited secret service. Bond soon realises that to defeat his sinister foe he must protect Madeleine (Léa Seydoux), the daughter of Casino Royale’s villainous Mr White – and it also won’t hurt to seduce the widow (Monica Bellucci) of a man he’s already killed. Wild action sequences, sardonic humour and familiar faces – Ben Whishaw as the nerdy Q, Naomie Harris as Moneypenny – provide all the Bondness we crave and more.

SPECTRE (CERT TBC)13 – 19 NOVEMBER
