Dear World Vets Donors, Supporters and Volunteers: It is with great enthusiasm that we share with you the results of our work in 2015 and 2016. With your support we have continued to improve the lives of thousands of animals around the world and to increase local capacity for improved animal welfare. In 2016 we celebrated our 10 year anniversary since we got started from the humble beginnings of a donation jar and a desire to make the world a better place for animals. Since then we have grown to be one of the most effective veterinary aid organizations in the world, working in over 42 countries worldwide. We couldn't have done it without your help. With over 3200 volunteer veterinary professionals dedicated to our cause, we are making lasting changes that have positively transformed not only communities but entire countries while concurrently staying focused on providing the best care possible for every individual animal entrusted in our care. We are World Vets. The support and efforts of all of you make it possible. We thank you. With much gratitude,

Cathy King DVM, MS, PhD World Vets CEO and Founder

VETERINARY FIELD SERVICE PROJECTS World Vets veterinary field service projects are an all-encompassing field operative program where veterinary services are conducted on a mass scale in an efficient manner. In the case of our campaigns targeting small animals, surgical procedures such as spay/neuter as well as preventative health treatments and consultations are all performed in unison. To execute these campaigns, veterinary volunteers are recruited. Our field service projects as well as the veterinary services provided are coordinated with foreign veterinarians, local animal welfare groups and volunteers and/or local government bodies located in any given project location. Our volunteer veterinary teams provide services that may otherwise not be available in the locations where we work. They are also able to restore hope and provide alternative answers as well as solutions to complicated health issues when everyone else has given up. Furthermore, our teams provide quality veterinary care at no cost. In some cases, this has proven to not only to be life changing, but lifesaving.

One Health Project – Nicaragua In the summer of 2016, a multidisciplinary team worked on a One Health project in a Nicaraguan rural community. The goal of the project was to learn more about the area, its people and the challenges they face, especially in areas where there is an overlap between human health, veterinary medicine and environmental issues. The team worked alongside regular World Vets veterinary teams, and took surveys from local residents who brought their animals for treatment at outreach clinics. Hundreds of surveys were taken and questions explored such areas as food, sanitation, cooking, health, animals and housing.

VETERINARY FIELD SERVICE PROJECTS Aside from direct veterinary care provided to companion animals, World Vets actively seeks to improve the quality of life for equines and donkeys on an international scale. For many years we have provided consistent veterinary services to carriage and cart horses in Nicaragua. As a result of our equine welfare project in Nicaragua, hundreds of horses receive regular preventative health treatments as well as safe castrations each year. We have also introduced an equine health passport, which aids horse owners to better care for their animals. This passport allows owners to record and keep track of all treatments and vaccinations their horses receive and when to follow up. In 2015 and 2016 our efforts were concentrated in Nicaragua where we operated mobile clinics throughout the year. These campaigns contribute to equine overall wellbeing through direct treatment in addition to the implementation of alternate pack saddles.

Pitaya’s Road to Recovery A World Vets team met Pithaya after they were asked to stop by a nearby home that had a sick horse. Upon arrival, they discovered the horse was severely malnourished with several infected wounds, overgrown feet and much more. Sadly, caring for Pithaya had become extremely difficult for his family as they had health issues of their own and no income source or means to earn money. In response, World Vets volunteers created a fundraiser to help cover the cost of Pithaya’s extensive treatment and care with much success. As a result of our volunteer’s initiative, Pithaya is on the road to recovery!

DISASTER RESPONSE Since 2010 it has been part of World Vets mission to provide disaster relief where animals are affected. In 2015 we were involved in major disaster relief efforts in Nepal. Nepal Earthquake World Vets response to the Nepal earthquake focused primarily on the remote and outlying rural villages in the country. These locations provided to be the hardest hit and in need of urgent, and often times lifesaving, veterinary work for primarily livestock. Our disaster response team was one of the first to arrive after the earthquake and worked in collaboration with local animal rescue groups, local and government veterinarians as well as other international aid agencies. Our services included direct animal care, capacity building for long term impact, establishing and providing training for specific treatment protocols for challenging veterinary cases unique to this disaster. We also provided direct financial support to local animal welfare groups.

Treating “Downer Cow” Syndrome One of the most urgent animal needs following the earthquake was helping the many milk cows that had traumatic limb injuries and “downer cow” syndrome. The veterinarians World Vets sent into the disaster zone had livestock expertise and in turn they treated many of these cows. They also established protocols to be used by Nepali veterinarians and other animal welfare groups to utilize in their care and treatment of both cows and buffalo suffering from these maladies.

TRAINING PROGRAMS World Vets Latin America Veterinary Training Center (LATC) is the cornerstone of our training program. Founded in 2011 in Granada, Nicaragua, this facility is equipped with modern equipment such as gas anesthesia, central oxygen, pulse oximeters, fluid pumps and an autoclave. It is also equipped with a conference room for holding educational lectures. At this facility, we employ full time Nicaraguan veterinary staff who provide high quality surgical instruction for Latin American veterinarians and veterinary students. This training is provided year-round and free of charge. As a result of our work, World Vets has received recognition from one of Nicaragua’s veterinary schools for the invaluable support that we have provided to their students in helping to shape their futures as veterinarians. Also based out of LATC is our International Veterinary Medicine (IVM) Program. This program provides hands on learning opportunities for international students while at the same time immerses them in the realities and challenges of practicing veterinary medicine in an international setting.

Training to Treat Downer Cows As part of World Vets disaster response efforts in Nepal, our veterinarians held a workshop to teach the specific treatment and protocols for “downer cows” and cast fixation to Nepalese veterinary professionals as well as other local and international NGO’s. This enabled many more animals to get the help they needed in disaster zones.
