As we move into the season of giftgiving and last-minute dashes to themall, I thought I might offer threegift ideas that are always thoughtfulchoices, especially for the people

we love. The gift ofcarol singingI think this is one of my favorites.

Whenever theres been an oppor-tunity to bundle up, go for a walkin the neighborhood or drive toa church family members hometo sing carols, Ive found this gift

works both ways. Even if we cantcarry a tune, watching someoneoffer and/or receive the gift of songcan restore our Christmas spirit. Soif we didnt get to hear our favorite

    carol on Sunday morning during

Advent and Christmas, whats stop-ping us from gathering a few friendsand family together, driving overto a loved ones home, and sing-ing our hearts out? Feeling blah? Iwould suggest two verses ofThe FirstNowell, followed byAngels We HaveHeard on High!

The gift of good conversationA man and a woman are sitting

at a table sipping tea together. Theyhave a window seat and apparentlyenough time to talk about some-

thing important. They talk forawhile, then the man gazes off intothe distance, becoming focused onan imaginary point in space. Theyare both in their mid-fifties, justfar enough away from other dinersto have an intimate conversationtogether. The man leans in andtakes her hand. I hear only onephrase. Im sorry. She smiles.Silence ensues, then more talking. She picks up her mug of steam-ing tea, cupping it in both hands.

There is a rhythm in their talk

not quite a dance, more like people praying in an empty satuary. Their exchange is romaand sacred. He leans back, foldhis arms across his chest, almresigned that his initial act of ctrition did not hit its mark. The tries again, this time reachwith both hands taking holdboth her hand and elbow, leancloser. Im sorry. As I watch this interplay betw

two people, I am mindful t

oftentimes the greatest gift can give someone is conversatWhether we meet over lunch or a friend on the phone, the gifsupportive presence can neverunderestimated.

The gift of candlelightAll right. I realize I initially pr

ised that these gifts wouldnt you a dime, and yet, there musa candle somewhere in your hohold waiting to be lit.

also have that same opportunity on

Sunday evenings, from 7 to 9 pm.Here are descriptions of Adult Study

classes in December and into 2008.

    Dec. 2, 9, 16: Spirit Alive - Com-paring Christians of the 1st & 21stCenturies

How did we get from Jesus to theearly church? How was it formed andenergized? Were the narratives aboutthose early times sanitized so as not toantagonize? Note how early Christiansresponded to competing religions, internal dissension, political tensions, and twisted immorality. Were the firstChristians similar to us or totally dif-ferent? Can we learn from them?

Dale & Barbara Bracey lead thisclass, focused on the Acts of the Apos-tles; participants prepare by reading achapter of Acts before each class.

Jan. 6, 13: Old Stone to New Build-ing: The History of Stone Church

Led by Alice Thorn, Stones officialhistorian, the first session will coverthe beginnings of the church, in thecontext of happenings in San Jose andin the Presbytery of San Jose, includ-

ing why we dont have a parking lotand other great questions. The secondsession will address the life that hasgone on within these walls, includingStones place as an activist church.Jan. 20: Sharing Stories about Mis-

sion and Social JusticeKen Henry leads a sharing of per-

sonal stories of participation in mis-sion and social justice.Jan. 27, Feb. 10, 17: So You Want

to Preach on Sunday?Ken Henry leads this instructional

class, based on his years as a preacherand college professor.

Jan. 6 - March 2 (Sunday Evening, 7- 9 pm): The Gospel According to UsWalter Hudson leads a class based

on the book, The Gospel According ToUs. Here is a summary from Walter:

In The Gospel According To Us,

Duncan Holcomb invites us to rethinour comfortable assumptions abouwho Jesus is and what being a moderChristian entails.

In an engagingly personal forewordhe draws us, as he was drawn, into thobstacles preventing us from encoun

tering Jesus through the biblical storThen, in eight essays, startling in the

wit and insight, he intentionally shockus in order to reconnect us with thelectrifying and illuminating poweof Jesus as Gods Word. Along th

way, he sketches the contradictionand social camouflage in our pleasancolor-between-the-linesChristianity, comparing it to Jesus subversive messagand gives a nifty beating to both popular piety and skeptical scholarship.

I offer this book with my highesrecommendation, but also with warning: in this book, you will finas much consternation as laughter.

There are no Adult Study classes on De23 or 30, or Feb. 3 (Congregational Meeing). Contact Pat Magee, Adult Studcoordinator, if you have any questions.

Stone Churchs Chancel Choir hasbeen preparing lovely choral selec-tions for each Sunday of Advent, as

well as very special music for both

December 16 and Christmas Eve.For the third Sunday of Advent

(Dec. 16), the choir will perform Ariel RamirezsMisa Criolla, apiece filled withenergy and Argen-tine rhythms. ArielRamrez composedthe Misa Criolla in1964 as one of thefirst masses in thenational idiom.Ramrez not onlyused the language of his country, but also the musical rhythms of

Argentina, partly played by localinstruments. It is scored for bambo, charango, quena, siku and accessorypercussion, such as goat nails. It is atrue Creole Mass, with Creole in thiscase meaning native; the ArgentineCreoles are descendents of many

peoples, including Europeans, Afcans, and Indians.

With this work, the choir has takeon quite a challenge; an Argentin

folkloric musician is quoted as sayin... hardly any choir sings the macompletely correct ...!

For the Christmas Eve service 11 pm, in honor of their upcominStone ChurchChoir Tour tothe British Islesin July 2008, thechoir will singScottish, Irish, and Englishcarols, including

songs from Benjamin BrittensA Cemony of Carols.

At all of these services, it is sincerehoped that you will be inspired by thWord, both spoken and sung.

Advent services will be held evSunday at 9:30 am. There are two Chrimas Eve Candlelight Services - at 5:3pm (with the children singing) and at pm (with the Chancel Choir).

As the rush, hassles and commit-ments of the holiday season becomeoverwhelming, you might long toseek a quiet sanctuary, a place where

you could reflect on thetrue meaning of thissacred time.

Perhaps you wouldlike to quietly meditatebefore a lovely stonewall, dimly lit by a hun-dred flickering candles,

surrounded by thedulcet tones of soft andsoothing music.

Taiz Advent Servicesat Stone Church pro-

vide just such a place- a place where you can quietly relaxand reflect, joining your voice withother voices singing beautiful spiri-tual music and quiet chants.

These beautiful services are bothcommunal, yet largely individual,

offering peace, healing and reconciation through song, silence, scripturreading and contemplative prayer.

In the midst of these peaceful ancalming Taiz AdvenServices, you can truseparate yourself from thcommercial holiday rus
