Christmas was only a few days ago. The scene of the Holy Family at the manger in Bethlehem is still very fresh before our eyes. On this first Sunday following Christmas, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Family. Why does the Church have a special feast dedicated to the Holy Family? Knowing our human nature and attention span to see something and move on, the Church wishes to resist the urge to move on, and encourages us to stay at this Christmas scene a little bit longer. The Church wishes for the faithful to continue standing before the mystery that is present here before us Before us, we see Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. We call the family of Jesus, Mary, and

Joseph the Holy Family. Why? What made them holy? Prayer. Prayer made the Holy Family holy, and prayer is what can make our families holy as well. The Second Vatican Council called the family the “domestic church.” What does that mean? We know that Church teaches people how to pray. The family is the domestic church because it is the family that first teaches children how to pray. Guided by mothers, fathers, grandparents, and other relatives, family is the place where children first come to know God, love God, and pray to God. To the right we see a beautiful image of the Holy Family. In this intimate family picture, we see the Blessed Mother holding Jesus, St. Joseph behind her, and her parents (Jesus’ grandparents) St. Anne in the lower right and St. Joachim in the upper left. St. Joseph has a finger to his lips, telling to remain quiet and listen.

Our families can become holy if we allow quiet space in our family life to listen to the Holy Family and listen to God in prayer. As we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, I share some reflections on Christian Families given by St. Pope John Paul II. St. Pope John Paul II, patron of families, teaches us about the importance of family prayer:

“Family prayer has for its very own object family life itself, which in all its varying circumstances is seen as a call from God and lived as a filial response to His call. Joys and sorrows, hopes and disappointments, births and birthday celebrations, wedding anniversaries of the parents, departures, separations and homecomings, important and far-reaching decisions, the death of those who are dear, – all of these mark God’s loving intervention in the family’s history. These should be seen as suitable moments for thanksgiving, for petition, for trusting abandonment of the family into the hands of their common Father in Heaven.

The dignity and responsibility of the Christian family as the Domestic Church can be achieved only with God’s unceasing aid, which will surely be granted if it is humbly and trustingly petitioned in prayer.

The concrete example and living witness of parents is fundamental and irreplaceable in educating their children to pray. Only by praying together with their children can a father and a mother, exercising their royal priesthood, penetrate the innermost depths of their children’s hearts, and leave an impression that the future events in their lives will not be able to erase.

Let us again listen to the appeal made by Paul VI to parents. Mothers, do you teach your children the Christian prayers? Do you prepare them in conjunction with priests for the sacraments that they receive when they are young: Confession, Communion, and Confirmation? Do you encourage them when they are sick to invoke the aid of the Blessed Virgin and the saints? Do you say the family Rosary together? And you, Fathers, do you pray with your children, with the whole family, the “domestic community” – at least sometimes? Your example of honesty in thought and action, joined to some common family prayer, is a lesson for life for your children, an act of worship of singular value. In this way, you bring peace to your home.”

Please pray for all families around the world. Have a Blessed New Year 2016! May the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph help us with their loving intercession and prayer.

Navidad fue hace sólo unos días. La escena de la Sagrada Familia en el pesebre de Belén aun esta muy presente ante nuestros ojos. En este primer domingo después de la Navidad, la Iglesia celebra la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia. ¿Por qué es que la Iglesia tiene una fiesta especial dedicada a la Sagrada Fami-lia? Reconociendo nuestra naturaleza humana y el corto lapso de atención al ver algo y seguir adelante, la Iglesia desea resistir esa tendencia de seguir adelante, y nos anima a permanecer atentos a esta escena de la Navidad un poco más. La Igle-sia quiere que los fieles sigan en pie ante este misterio. Ante nosotros, vemos a Jesús, María y José, a

cuyos por nombre se les da, La Sagrada Familia. ¿Y por qué es esto? ¿Qué los hizo santos? La oración. La oración hizo a la Sa-grada Familia, Santa. Y la oración es lo que puede hacer a nues-tras familias santas también. El Concilio Vaticano II da por nom-bre a la familia, la "iglesia doméstica". ¿Qué significa eso? Noso-tros sabemos que la Iglesia enseña a la gente o al pueblo cómo orar. La familia es la Iglesia Doméstica, porque es la familia quien ense-ña primero a los niños como orar. Guiados por madres, padres, abuelos y otros familiares, la familia es donde los niños primero llegan a conocer a Dios, amar a Dios y a orar a Dios. A la derecha vemos una bella imagen de la Sagrada Familia. En esta imagen inti-ma de la familia, vemos a nuestra Santa Madre sosteniendo a Jesús, a San José detrás de ella, y a sus padres (los abuelos de Jesús) Santa Ana en la parte inferior derecha y San Joaquín en la parte superior izquierda. San José tiene un dedo en los labios, como diciendo que permanezcan en silencio y que escuchen.

Nuestras familias pueden llegar a ser santas si permitimos un espacio de silencio en nuestra vida familiar para escuchar a la Sagrada Familia ya que el escuchar a Dios es hacer oración. Al celebrar la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia, comparto algunas reflexio-nes sobre las familias cristianas que fueron dadas por San Papa Juan Pablo II. San Papa Juan Pablo II, patrón de las familias, nos enseña acerca de la importancia de la oración en familia: "La oración familiar tiene por objeto propio a la vida familiar, que en todas sus diversas circunstancias es visto como una llamada de Dios y vivido como respuesta filial a su llamado. Alegrías y triste-zas, esperanzas y decepciones, nacimientos y cumpleaños, aniversa-rios de boda de los padres, partidas, alejamientos y regresos, decisiones importantes y de largo alcance, la muerte de seres queridos, - todos estos marcan la intervención del amor de Dios en el la historia de la familia. Estos momentos deben ser vistos como momentos adecuados de agradecimiento, de petición, de un confiado abandono de la familia en las manos de nuestro Padre en el Cielo.

La dignidad y la responsabilidad de La Familia Cristiana como Iglesia Doméstica pueden lograrse solo con la ayu-da incesante de Dios, que seguramente será concedida si es humildemente y confiadamente solicitada en la oración.

El ejemplo concreto y el testimonio vivo de los padres son fundamentales e insustituibles en la educación de los hijos hacia la oración. Sólo orando junto con sus hijos puede un padre y una madre, ejerciendo su sacerdocio real, penetrar hasta el punto más profundo de los corazones de sus hijos, y quedar tan impresos que los futuros acontecimientos de la vida no podrán borrar.

Escuchemos nuevamente el llamado de Pablo VI a los padres: Madres, ¿enseñan a sus hijos las oraciones cristia-nas? ¿Los preparan junto con los sacerdotes para los sacramentos que han de recibir de chicos: la Confesión, la Comunión y la Confirmación? ¿Los animas cuando están enfermos a invocar la ayuda de la Santísima Virgen y la de los santos? ¿Rezan el Rosario en juntos en familia? ¿Y Ustedes, Padres, oran con sus hijos, con toda la familia, la "comunidad domes-tica" – por lo menos algunas veces? Sus ejemplos de honestidad en pensamiento y en acción, en unión con alguna oración común de familia, es una lección de vida para sus hijos, un acto de adoración de valor singular. De esta manera, traerás la paz a tu hogar".

Por favor oren por todas las familias alrededor del mundo. ¡Que tengan un santísimo Año Nuevo 2016! Que la Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José nos ayude con su intercesión amorosa y la oración. Vivat Jesús! ¡Viva Jesús!

Wciąż jeszcze mamy świeżo przed oczami obraz Świętej Rodziny w betlejemskiej stajence – od Bożego Narodzenia minęło przecież ledwie parę dni. W dzisiejszą pierwszą niedzielę po Świętach przypada w Kościele Święto Świętej Rodziny. Skąd uroczystość poświęcona w szcze-gólności Świętej Rodzinie? Otóż ludzie mają to do siebie, że jeśli coś przykuwa ich uwagę, to zazwyczaj na krótko. Potem idą dalej. Kościół pragnie, abyśmy zatrzymali się w Betlejem na trochę dłużej. Powinniśmy dłużej być świadkami tej wielkiej Tajemnicy, którą mamy przed ocza-

mi. Widzimy Jezusa, Maryję i Józefa. Nazywamy Ich Świętą Rodziną, ale właściwie dlaczego? Co czyni Ich święty-mi? Modlitwa. Modlitwa uczyniła rodzinę Jezusa świętą; nasza rodzina też może się taką stać. Sobór Watykański II określił rodzinę mianem „Kościoła domowego”. Kościół naucza nas, jak się modlić. Rodzina jest Kościołem domowym, gdyż to właśnie w rodzinie dziecko uczy się wartości modlitwy. Pod kierunkiem rodziców, dziadków i in-nych krewnych, dziecko poznaje Boga. Uczy się Boga kochać i modlić do Niego. Po prawej widzimy piękny obraz Świętej Rodziny. Najświętsza Maryja Panna trzyma tu Jezusa w rami-onach, za Nią stoi św. Józef oraz rodzice Maryi (dziadkowie Jezusa) – św. Anna w prawym dolnym rogu i św. Joachim w lewym górnym rogu. Św. Joachim z palcem na ustach mówi nam, żebyśmy byli cicho i słuchali uważnie. Nasza rodzina może stać się święta, jeśli tylko stale będziemy w ciszy słuchać tego, co Jezus, Maryja i Józef chcą nam powiedzieć. Na dzisiejsze Święto Świętej Rodziny, pragnę Wam przypomnieć refleksje św. Jana Pawła II (patrona rodzin) na ten temat. Mawiał On, że sednem modlitwy rodzinnej jest sama rodzina, będąca powołaniem od Boga, oraz wszystkie te ra-dości, smutki, nadzieje, rozczarowania i trudności życia codziennego, jakie jej dotyczą. Narodziny, kolejne rocznice urodzin i ślubu, odejścia i powroty, śmierć bliskich, podejmowanie najważniejszych decyzji… Wszystko to powinno być okazją do składania Bogu dziękczynienia i zanoszenia próśb, do ufnego powierzania losu całej rodziny naszemu Ojcu Niebieskiemu. Jedynie z nieustającą pomocą Bożą chrześcijańska rodzina może godnie i odpowiedzialnie wypełniać powi-erzoną jej rolę „Kościoła domowego”. Owe wsparcie z pewnością zostanie udzielone, jeśli poprosi się o nie w ufnej i pokornej modlitwie. W przekazywaniu daru modlitwy kolejnym pokoleniom, fundamentalną rolę odgrywa żywe świadectwo rodzi-ców. Rodzice (realizując swoje święte powołanie) odcisną w sercach swoich dzieci niezatarty ślad na całe życie, jedynie poprzez wspólną z nimi modlitwę. Posłuchajmy teraz apelu do rodziców, wygłoszonego przez papieża Pawła VI. Matki – czy uczycie swoje dzieci chrześcijańskich modlitw? Czy wspólnie z kapłanami przygotowujecie ich do Spowiedzi Świętej, do I Komunii i Sakramentu Bierzmowania? Kiedy są chore, zachęcacie ich do wzywania pomocy Najświętszej Panienki oraz świętych? Czy wspólnie odmawiacie całą rodziną Różaniec? Ojcowie – modlicie się ze swoimi dziećmi (przynajmniej czasami), całą rodziną? Dawany przez Was przykład uczciwości w myśli i działaniu, w połączeniu ze wspólną modlitwą, jest dla Waszych dzieci bezcenną lekcją na całe życie. Dzięki temu, w Waszym domu panuje pokój. Módlmy się za wszystkie rodziny na całym świecie. Życzę Wam błogosławionego Nowego Roku 2016! Święta Rodzino – Jezusie, Maryjo i Józefie – miejcie nas zawsze w Swojej opiece! Vivat Jesus! Christmas 2015 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, A Blessed Christmas to you all. My greeting comes at a time marked by sad and troubling news for our city, our nation and our world. The joyful news of Christmas competes in these days with stories of street violence in our city, of wars, conflicts and acts of terrorism throughout the world including in our own nation. As people of faith, we must read these “signs of the times.” As we do, so Christmas gives us a proper perspective: the sadness of violence and war does not have the last word. God has come to save us, for we cannot save ourselves. The savior born to us raises us up from darkness and brings us into his own wonderful light. One of the Christmas readings taken from Paul’s letter to Titus says this: When the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us… Titus 3:4-5 We hear those words “because of his mercy,” especially as we celebrate the Jubilee of Mercy this year. The challenge for us is not just to believe that God is merciful, but also to believe that God is merciful to us and that God is blessing us with his mercy precisely at this very moment, and in the limited circumstances of our lives and relationships. When we accept that mercy, we will be transformed and become the merciful light of God in a dark and cold world. Then, our own works of mercy will, in turn, bring hope, healing, and renewal, just as God’s mercy has done for us. Boże Narodzenie 2015 Drodzy Bracia i Drogie Siostry w Chrystusie, Życzę wszystkim błogosławionych Świąt Bożego Narodzenia. Przesyłam życzenia w czasie naznaczonym smutnymi i niepokojący-mi dla naszego miasta, naszego narodu i świata wiadomościami. Radosne przesłanie płynące z Bożego Narodzenia konkuruje w tych dniach z informacjami o przemocy na ulicach naszego miasta, o wojnach, konfliktach i aktach terrorystycznych na całym świecie, włączywszy nasz własny naród. Jako ludzie wiary musimy odczytywać te „znaki czasu”. Czyniąc tak, spoglądamy na nie przez pryz-mat Bożego Narodzenia, które nadaje im właściwą perspektywę: ostatnie słowo nie należy do smutku płynącego z przemocy i wojen. Bóg przyszedł, aby nas zbawić, gdyż sami zbawić się nie możemy. Zbawca zrodzony dla nas, podnosi nas z ciemności, aby zaprowa-dzić do swego wspaniałego światła. Jedno z czytań podczas Świąt Bożego Narodzenia z Listu św. Pawła do Tytusa mówi tak: Gdy zaś ukazała się dobroć i miłość Zbawiciela, naszego Boga, do ludzi, nie ze względu na sprawiedliwe uczynki, jakie spełniliśmy, lecz z miłosierdzia swego, zbawił nas… Tytus 3, 4-5 Często, a szczególnie obchodząc Jubileuszu Miłosierdzia w bieżącym roku, słyszymy słowa „dzięki Jego miłosierdziu”. Wyzwaniem dla nas nie jest jedynie wiara w to, że Bóg jest miłosierny, ale także wiara w to, że Bóg jest miłosierny dla nas i, że Bóg obdarza nas łaską swego miłosierdzia dokładnie w tym właśnie momencie, w ograni-czoności naszego życia i w ograniczoności naszych relacji. Kiedy zaakceptujemy to miłosierdzie, to zostaniemy przemienieni i sta-niemy się miłosiernym światłem Boga w ciemności i w świecie pełnym chłodu. Nasze własne dzieła miłosierdzia przyniosą z kolei nadzieję, uzdrowienie i odnowę, tak samo jak Boże miłosierdzie czyni to dla nas. Navidad 2015 Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo: Una Bendita Navidad para todos ustedes. Les envío este saludo en un momento marcado por noticias tristes y preocupantes para nuestra ciudad, nuestra nación y nuestro mundo. Las gozosas nuevas de la Navidad compiten estos días con historias de violencia en las calles de nuestra ciudad, de guerras, conflictos y actos de terrorismo en todo el mundo, incluso en nuestra propia nación. Como personas de fe, debemos leer estos “signos de los tiempos”. Para hacerlo, la Navidad nos aporta una perspectiva adecuada: la tristeza de la violencia y la guerra no tiene la última palabra. Dios ha venido a salvarnos, pues no podemos salvarnos a nosotros mismos. El salvador, que nació para nosotros, nos rescata de la oscuridad y nos introduce en su propia luz maravillosa. Una de las lecturas de Navidad tomadas de la carta de Pablo a Tito, dice lo siguiente: Se manifestó la bondad de Dios, nuestro salvador, y su amor a los hombres; no se fijó en lo bueno que hubiéramos hecho, sino que tuvo misericordia de nosotros y nos salvó ... Tito 3, 4-5 Escuchamos esas palabras “sino que tuvo misericordia”, especialmente ahora que celebramos este año el Jubileo de la Misericordia. El reto para nosotros no sólo consiste en creer que Dios es misericordioso, sino en creer también que Dios es misericordioso con nosotros y que nos bendice con su misericordia en este preciso momento y en las circunstancias limitadas de nuestras vidas y relaciones. Cuando aceptemos esa misericordia, seremos transformados y nos convertiremos en la luz misericordiosa de Dios en un mundo oscuro y frío. Entonces, nuestras obras de misericordia traerán, a su vez, esperanza, sanación y renovación, del mismo modo que la misericordia de Dios nos las ha traído a nosotros.
