INTRODUCTIONThe CuisinartCoffee Bar Automatic Grind &Brew Coffeemaker is a coffee lovers dream. It delivers the freshest coffee in the world. The secret? It grinds the beans right beforeit brews them. Just add coffee beans to thegrinder basket, fill the reservoir with water, put in your filter and press the ON button. In minutes, youll have a wonderfully freshpot of coffee.

Another reason this coffeemaker rewards youwith pure coffee flavor is that it has the samebrewing system found in coffee bars. It usesonly the water needed to extract all the richcoffee taste without extracting any bitterness.

We know the Cuisinart Automatic Grind &BrewTM will bring you years of pleasure.Nothing is more satisfying than a rich cup ofyour favorite brew.

    THE COFFEE BAR

    FLAVOR SYSTEM

All coffee has the rich aromatic flavors weassociate with a great cup of coffee, as well asthe acidic, bitter flavors we associate with a

bad cup. Commercial brewers have discoveredthat the good and bad flavors wash out ofthe grounds at a different rate, with the goodflavors washing out faster than the bad. Thetrick is to use only enough water to wash outthe good flavors and leave the bad behind. The relatively small amount of water needed todo this leaves a very strong cup of coffee, so itis necessary to add some water to bring it to apleasant strength.

The Coffee Bar Flavor System does the work

for you. Using the proportions and grindrecommended, simply set the Flavor Systemdial for the number of cups you intend to brew.Thats all there is to it! The Coffee Bar FlavorSystem automatically measures the correctamount of water needed to pass through thegrounds, and directs the rest of the water intothe carafe.

Simply set the red dial for the number of cups of coffeeyou are brewing, and the Flavor System ensures greatcoffee bar flavor.

THE QUEST FORTHE PERFECT CUPOF COFFEE

It is generally agreed that there are four basicelements critical to the perfect cup:

Element 1: WaterCoffee is 98% water. Often overlooked, thequality of the water is as important as thequality of the coffee. If you filter your drinkingwater, filter the water for your coffeemaker.A good rule of thumb is that if your waterdoesnt taste good from the tap, it wont tasteany better in your coffee.

For hard water areas, we recommend usingbottled water. The calcium in the water and

the softeners used to combat it have a majorimpact on the extraction of the coffee. Hardwater will also accelerate calcium buildupinside the coffeemaker which, in turn, slowsdown brewing, affects the flavor of thecoffee, and ultimately may shorten the lifeof your coffeemaker.

Element 2: CoffeeWhile the bulk of the liquid is water, all of theflavor should be from the coffee. To achievethe same great quality cup of coffee you

receive at a coffee bar, you need to use thesame quality beans.

Buy the beans fresh and whole, only abouttwo weeks supply at a time for maximumfreshness. Once the coffee bean is broken, itsflavor degrades very quickly. Thats why theAutomatic Grind & Brew grinds your coffee

just prior to brewing. If it is not practical to buysmall supplies, we recommend you separatelarger amounts of beans into one to two weekportions immediately after purchase, and

freeze them in airtight containers. The bestway to maximize freshness is to minimizeexposure to air, light and moisture. So, oncebeans have been removed from the freezer, maintain them in a sealed container at roomtemperature, since damaging condensationoccurs every time the beans are removed fromthe freezer or refrigerator. Note that some cof-fee experts advise against freezing dark-roastbeans, because freezing can cause the oils tocoagulate. Other experts disagree. We suggestyou experiment and decide for yourself.

Element 3: GrindThe grind is critical for proper flavor extraction. If the grind is too fine, overextraction and bit-terness will result. Too fine a grind may alsoclog the filter. If grind is too coarse, the waterwill pass through too quickly and the desiredflavors will not be extracted. The Automatic

    Grind & Brew

is preset for a medium grind, the optimal grind for this type of coffeemaker.

Element 4: ProportionThe Automatic Grind & Brew makes up to ten(10) 5-ounce cups of coffee.

    Using Whole Beans:

To make a full pot of coffee:Fill the grinder basket to the top.DO NOT OVERFILL OR THE GRINDERCOULD MALFUNCTION.

To make fewer than 10 cups of coffee:We recommend you use about 1 tablespoonof whole beans per cup. Note: Onemeasuring scoop is approximately equalto one tablespoon. For 1 or 2 cups, use1-1/2 tablespoons per cup. Adjust the recipeaccording to individual taste.

    Using Pre-Ground Coffee:

Although it is preferable to use fresh, wholebeans, you can make coffee in the AutomaticGrind & Brew using pre-ground beans.

To do so, turn off the grinder by pressing theGrind Off button before turning on the unit.

    Our recipe:

We suggest that you use 1 to 1 1/2 table-spoons of ground coffee per cup. Note: Onemeasuring scoop is approximately equalto one tablespoon. Adjust the recipe to

your taste.NOTE: The maximum capacity for groundcoffee is 15 tablespoons, using either apaper or permanent filter. Exceeding thisamount may cause overflow if the coffee istoo finely ground.

FEATURES ANDBENEFITSWe created the Premier Series of coffeemak-ers with you in mind. Every aspect has beendesigned to be easy to use. We made a largewater window which is easily viewed from the

front of the machine, and the reservoir lidopens to the back, providing easy access forfilling. The removable filter basket liner ismolded in black plastic to avoid unsightlystaining. We put rubber feet on the front of themachine only, so it's easy to move around onthe countertop, yet won't slide as you set thecontrols. We also reasoned that an easy-to-hold carafe would allow you more control whilepouring, helping to avoid spills. And we placedthe carafe markings next to the handle, not onthe side of the pot, so you can easily see themas you fill the carafe with water.

    The Parts1. Reservoir Cover

Press to open. Press to lock. A Safety InterlockSystem prevents operation of the unit if thereservoir cover is open more than one halfinch (1/2").

    2. Water Window

Markings indicate water needed to makecorresponding cups of brewed coffee.

    3. Brew PauseTM Feature (Not shown)

Stops flow of coffee from basket when carafeis removed from heater plate, so a cup canbe poured in mid-brew, if desired. Since theextraction rate varies during the brew cycle,we recommend allowing the brewing cycle tofinish before pouring coffee.

    4. Carafe

    a. Taste Keeper Lid: Helps preservecoffee flavor by minimizing oxygenflow into carafe.

    b. Comfort Grip Handle: Safe, controlledpouring.

    c. Brewed Coffee Markings: These arelocated close to the handle for easierviewing.

    5. Coffee Temperature Monitor

Monitors brewed coffee temperature andmaintains it at the same level, even if thereis only a small amount of coffee in the carafe.Note: temperature is adjustable.

    6. Warming Plate

    7. Cord Storage (Not shown)

Unused cord is easily pushed into the bottomof coffeemaker, keeping counters neat.

    8. Control Panel

    9. Safety Interlock System (Not shown)

Prevents operation of the unit if the reservoircover is open more than 1/2 inch or the grinderbasket lid and/or filter basket cover are not inplace. An audible tone will sound continuouslyuntil cover is closed or the missing parts are inplace and the cover is closed.

NOTE:FILTER BASKET MUST BE IN PLACE FORUNIT TO OPERATE.A note about filters: When using a permanentfilter like the Cuisinartgold-tone filter, be surethat the handle is positioned away from thegrinder basket. If not, the handle may interferewith the flow of coffee into the filter basket. Also note: using a permanent or gold-tonefilter will allow some fine coffee grounds tofall into the coffee carafe. This will appear

    as sediment in the carafe.

    14. Finger GripsUse these and the handle to easily lift thegrinder/filter basket out for cleaning.

The Automatic Shutoff Time (ASO) may beprogrammed either before or during coffeebrewing. You may also re-program the ASOtime when brewing has been completed. If youdo so, the Automatic Grind & Brew will auto-matically account for any time that has already

elapsed after brewing. For example, if you setthe ASO for 40 minutes and 25 minutes havealready elapsed, the Grind & Brew will shutoff automatically after 15 minutes (40 minutesminus the 25 elapsed equals 15 minutes).

    VARIABLE KEEP WARMTEMPERATURE

The Automatic Grind & Brew has a method ofsetting the holding temperature of the coffee inthe carafe. The display appears as a series of

elliptical or oval-shaped dots across the lowerportion of the digital readout, and indicates theselected temperature relative to the holdingtemperature preset at the factory.

If you use a lot of milk in your coffee, set tem-perature higher than normal. If you prefer cool-

er coffee, lower the temperature. We encour-age you to experiment and determine what isbest for you. Please note that the heater plateon the coffeemaker is not powerful enough toraise the temperature of the coffee in the pot, once coffee has been brewed. This feature isdesigned as a preset and will affect the cof-fee during the brewing cycle. If the coffee istoo hot, the temperature can be lowered, butsince we do not recommend leaving the coffeeon direct heat for more than twenty minutes,

the simplest way to reduce the heat is toshut off the coffeemaker and allow coffee tocool before transfer to a thermal carafe.

Never use the carafe on a heated stovetop.

    To Set Temperature:

Press the Set Temp button on your cof-feemaker. The time display will disappear andonly the Temperature Display remains. The (-)and (+) buttons (same as Hours and Minutes, respectively) can then be used to increase ordecrease the holding temperature. The select-ed temperature will remain programmed untilyou change it or until the coffeemaker is unplugged.

    INCREASING THE TEMPERATURE:

    DECREASING THE TEMPERATURE:

    Exiting Set Temperature Mode:

There are three ways to exit Set Temperature

    mode:

    1. Press Set Temp button. Timedisplay reappears.

    2. Press any button besides (-), (+) or TempSet. The function of the button pressed willbe executed.

    3. Do nothing. If neither the (-) nor (+) button ispressed for a period of five seconds, theSet Temperature mode will be exited.

NOTE: If, at any time during the life of the cof-feemaker, the temperature display bar beginsto flash and the Temp Set button has no effecton the display, this indicates damage to theCoffee Temperature Monitor. Otherwise thecoffeemaker will continue to function normally.Because there are no user serviceable partsinside, the coffeemaker must be returned to anauthorized Cuisinart Repair Center if servicingis desired.

    TURNING OFF GRIND FUNCTION

To turn off the grinding function, press theGrind Off button. A yellow LED will beilluminated. Then press the On button.

MAKING COFFEEBefore you make the first pot of coffee in yournew Cuisinart Coffee Bar Automatic Grind &Brew coffeemaker, we recommend operatingthe coffeemaker once, using only water and apaper filter. This will remove any dust orresidues which remain in the system from themanufacturing process.

    1. Fill the Water ReservoirRemove the carafe from the hot plate. Openthe carafe cover and fill with cold water to justover the amount of coffee you are making.Close the carafe cover. Press the reservoir lidto open. Pour the water from the carafe intoreservoir. The numbers on the water reservoirindicate a slightly higher amount of water percup than the carafe markings. This is to com-pensate for the amount of water lost in wettingthe grounds, and lost as steam during thebrewing process. The float on the water win-dow indicates the amount of water necessaryto brew the corresponding amount of coffee.

Replace the carafe on the hot plate.

    2. Set the Flavor System

The Flavor System has been designed toextract the proper coffee flavor compoundswhen the dial is positioned according to thenumber of cups being brewed.

NOTE: If you use less than the recommend-ed coffee measure, or you use a grind thatis finer than the recommended grind, setthe Flavor System to a higher cup setting. This takes more water away from the

grounds, preventing overextraction.Conversely, if you use more coffee or acoarser grind, set Flavor System to alower setting.

To deactivate the Flavor System, turnthe selector knob counterclockwise tothe OFF setting.

    3. Add Beans/Filter

Lift the grinder basket lid, using the recess oneither side. Fill the basket with the desiredquantity of beans. Lift the filter basketcover/filter holder. (See parts list for bestlocation to grasp). Place a #4 cone filter ora permanent filter in the basket.

Note: When using a permanent filter, besure that the filter handle is facing awayfrom the grinder basket. If you do not doso, the handle may interfere with the flowof ground coffee into the filter basket. Alsonote: a permanent filter may allow someground coffee to flow into carafe.

The filter holder will help to keep the filteropen, but when using a paper filter, be surethat the filter is completely open and fully

inserted into the basket. To make a full pot of coffee (10 cups), fill thegrinder basket to the top.

To make fewer than 10 cups of coffee, wesuggest that you use about 1 tablespoon ofwhole beans per cup. Note: One measuringscoop is approximately equal to onetablespoon. For 1 or 2 cups, use 1-1/2tablespoons per cup. Adjust the recipeaccording to your individual taste.

    4. Close the Reservoir LidPress down to lock. To prevent coffee groundsfrom escaping the grinding chamber, makesure reservoir lid is locked.

The Automatic Grind & Brew is equippedwith a Safety Interlock System. The Grind &Brew will not operate if the cover of theunit is open more than 1/2 inch or thegrinder cover and/or the filter cover are leftout. Because grinder blades spin duringoperation, the Grind & Brew will not oper-ate if the cover of the unit is open. If you tryto turn the unit on with the cover open, theunit will beep continuously until the miss-ing parts are installed and you close the lid.The unit will also beep if you open the lidduring the brewing process. The grinderwill stop grinding or, if brewing, the brew-ing will stop. Once the missing parts areinstalled and the cover is closed, the beep-ing will stop. The brewing process can berestarted by pressing the On button.Restarting the process will not affect coffee

results. If you do not want the grinder tocome on again, press the Grind Off but-ton before pressing the On button. Oncethe lid is closed, the beeping will stop, andthe grind and brew process will start againfrom the beginning.

    5. Before Brewing CoffeeMake sure you have replaced the glasscarafe in its position on the warming plateand have placed a filter in the grinder/filterbasket. Plug the cord into an electrical outlet. The clock will flash 12:00 continuously untilit has been set. This will not interfere with theoperation of the coffeemaker. To set clock, see the Programming Your Coffeemakersection, page 10.

Check to see that the Automatic Shutoff Time

and the Carafe Keep Warm Temperature set-tings are set to match your preference. Forinformation on these features, see"Programming Your Coffeemaker on page 10.

    6. Power Unit

    a) Immediate grinding and brewing:

Switch the control panel to ON. The indicatorwill light and the process will begin.

    b) ProgrammedBrewing:

Press the Program button. The indicator willlight and the display will show the programmedtime for as long as the button is depressed. The display reverts back to time of day oncethe button is released. If the indicator lightgoes off once the button has been released, itmeans the program has not been set. To setthe programmed time, see Programming YourCoffeemaker on page 10.

    7. Select Cups Setting

If you are brewing fewer than 5 cups, press the

1-4 button. The indicator light will illumi-nate. Note that the light will only come on if thecoffeemaker has been turned on or set to theprogram mode first.

    8. During and After Brewing

The Brew Pause feature allows you to removethe carafe from the heater during mid-brew.The brewing process does not stop during thisperiod; only the flow of coffee from the basketstops. Do not remove the carafe for longerthan 30 seconds or the coffee may overflow

the basket. While we offer this feature, we donot recommend that you pour coffee before thecycle has reached completion, since the coffeebrewed at the beginning of the cycle has a fla-vor profile which is very different from the cof-fee made at the end of the cycle. Removing acup during the brewing cycle will alter the flavor

    of the finished pot.

Once the coffee has finished brewing, stir itbefore serving to blend the flavors. The coffeeat the bottom of the carafe will be somewhatstronger than the coffee at the top.

When the brewing cycle has been completed, five beeps will sound. Coffee will continueto stream from the filter for several seconds.

After brewing, the heater plate will keep thecoffee at about 180-185F. We recommend

transferring the coffee to a thermal carafe pre-heated with hot water, if the coffee is not goingto be drunk within 20 minutes.

    TO MAKE COFFEE WITHPRE-GROUND BEANS:

NOTE: The maximum capacity for groundcoffee is 15 tablespoons, using either apaper or permanent filter. Exceeding theseamounts may cause overflow if the coffeeis too finely ground.
