5th July 8:30am-12:00pm

Society now spends an increasing amount of time connected online and it is up to government and business to react appropriately in order to effectively engage with key target audiences. The purpose of today’s workshop at Google is to give delegates a practical insight into how growth, innovative engagement and efficiency gains can be realised through the appropriate application of digital technologies.

08:30 Breakfast

09:00 Introduction from David Black

09:30-10:15 Workshop 1: AdwordsPresenter: Emma Thorn

This session will initially begin with a strategic overview of the nature of the Digital Economy today and the challenges that organisations are currently facing in the online sector, before a discussion begins on how Google is actively helping to support business online. A question and answer session will follow which will enable delegates to ask about the initiatives, services and products which Google have created and how these might reasonably be applied throughout different sectors.

10:15-11:00 Workshop 2: Youtube as an engagement platformPresenter: Anais Hayes

Social media is opening up vast opportunities to reach and influence large audiences and this session aims to explore the impact that Youtube can have as a tool for political and business engagement. Exploring case studies of how businesses and politicians are currently using the Youtube platform, this session will provide an opportunity to witness best practice and learn about the key aspects behind the creation of successful engagement strategies.

11:00-11:30 Workshop 3: Get MoPresenter: Joel Lohrey

With a rising proportion of the UK population increasingly accessing the internet on the move via their smartphones, it is imperative that businesses create and maintain websites which are mobile friendly. Websites designed for the small screen and which place a premium on accessibility can help business further connect with customers.

With this in mind the session will take an interactive focus as delegates are introduced to Get Mo, an online resource which helps identify exactly how mobile friendly any website is. Delegates will then be invited to use the resource in order to assess how mobile friendly their company website is and reports will be produced which can be taken away.

11:30-12:00 Workshop 3: Google Insights and Public DataPresenter: Nicola Arnold

This session will adopt an interactive focus as delegates are introduced to both Google Insights and Google Public Data Explorer. Google Insights for search provides detailed information on the search terms that users have been entering into the Google search engine and can superimpose a visual representation of the popularity of particular search terms onto a physical map of a local community. The Google Public Data Set is designed to enable users to take large data sets and make them more palatable for public consumption by turning the data into more visually appealing formats and posting it online.

These resources are designed to empower citizens and businesses by providing them with access to smart and innovative data sources that will support increasingly informed and evidence based decision-making based on data-driven facts.

6th July 9:00am-12:00pmThe Government Digital Service (GDS) as part of the Cabinet Office is tasked with transforming government digital services. Established in response to Martha Lane Fox’s report, ‘Directgov 2010 and beyond: revolution not evolution’, the core purpose of the GDS is to ensure the Government offers world-class digital products that meet the needs of people today.

Today’s session will offer an opportunity to hear about the guiding principles of the GDS and how it aims to increase the overall quality of user experience when accessing government services online. Delegates will hear about the development of the single government domain (GOV.UK), alongside the work being done to ensure that driving an online channel shift leaves no-users behind. With users now increasingly accustomed to high quality web services, the session will close with a discussion relating to how Government departments are utilising agile technological solutions in order to better meet business challenges.

09:00 Welcome and Introductions led by Abby Peel

09:15-10:00 Presentation 1: Government Digital ServicePresenter:Abby Peel

This session will introduce the Government Digital Service and the key implications of the Digital by Default Strategy which came out of the government’s response to Martha Lane Fox’s report. The first implication is that government itself needs to become digitally minded in order to deliver the standard of service which users have grown accustomed to based on their continually evolving online interaction with businesses and commercial services. The second implication is that, as digital by default comes into effect and the scale of government service provision dramatically expands it will be essential to maintain the quality of user experiences and standards of user satisfaction as more and more individuals start accessing these services.

10:00-10.30 Coffee break & Meet and GreetPresenter: Emer Coleman

10:30-11:00 Presentation 2: Gov.UKPresenter: Sarah Prag

With businesses continually developing online strategies in order to better reach their customers, government must follow, if it is to become truly Digital by Default. This session will explore the rationale and development behind the single government domain which aims to deliver simpler, clearer and faster services for users and savings and innovation for government.

In order to encourage the public to switch off from traditional forms of access to public services it is vital that the needs of users are placed at the forefront of the development of new government digital initiatives, and this session will offer a timely opportunity to hear about how the development of single government domain has managed to factor in as much user feedback as possible.

11:00-11:30 Presentation 3: Digital PolicyPresenter: Bob Kamall

The Government’s adoption of the Digital by Default strategy raises the challenge of ensuring that public services are easily accessible for all those who are entitled to them. Whilst online public services are designed to be increasingly user-centric, innovative and efficient, there is a responsibility to ensure that help is available for those users who rely on public services but are not familiar with operating online so that they too have the opportunity to access increasingly high-quality services.

This session will offer an opportunity to hear how the Government Digital Service is tackling Digital Inclusion so that everyone has the ability to utilise increasingly innovative online services.

11:30-12:00 Presentation 4: InnovationPresenter: Mark O’Neill

This session will explore how the application of innovative and agile digital solutions across the government is helping to improve the ability of individual departments to meet particular business challenges in a quicker and more effective manner. Led by Mark O’Neill, who was responsible for the creation of the e-Petitions website, this session will explore how technological solutions such as cloud computing have been integrated into public sector operation enabling new innovative modes of interaction to take place between Government, suppliers and users alike.
