THRASS - This week we have been very fortunate to have had Pete Petros, trainer from the THRASS Institute, visit for three days and work with all of our teachers and teacher aides in consolidating and enhancing the our understanding of the complexities of the English language and how to teach it through using THRASS as a tool. Pete first came to our school in January for a two-day in-service and teachers have been implementing components of THRASS throughout Term 1. The last few days have provided teachers with the opportunity to fine tune their own thinking and see THRASS in action with Pete modelling lessons in classes. A parent information session was also offered to all parents. Key components have focussed on phonemic awareness and word work with students including but not limited to: Knowing the 44 phonemes of the English language Breaking words down to their individual phonemes at all year levels in order to encourage and support correct pronunciation

of words taught. Understanding and applying the phonographic principle Consolidation of terminology including grapheme, phoneme, graph, digraph, key grapheme trigraph, plosives, fricatives,

voiced consonants, unvoiced consonants, homophone, homograph, homonym, monophthongs, diphthongs, diphones, triphones, allophones, non-phonetic spelling and more. Focus was given to how these components impact on the patterns used in words

Understanding the key grapehemes on the THRASS chart in order to make informed choices when spelling The importance of understanding syllable breaks and the impact they have on the vowel phonemes within a word The experience has enabled our staff to continue to refine their craft of teaching within all classrooms across our school and we look forward to seeing our students grow in their use of the tool to improve their literacy skills. Around the School - While this week has been very THRASS focussed however I have had the pleasure of seeing: All students from Prep through to Year 10 demonstrating Responsible, Respectful, Safe, Active Learning behaviours with

relief teaching staff that have worked across our school this week. Prep students working on consolidating their knowledge of representations of numbers 0-10. I was fortunate to have Connor

show me his excellent work which he had completed accurately and could tell me how he knew which numerals to match to the finger pictures, including his ability to ‘just know’ that 4 fingers was ‘4’. This is called subitising which is an important foundation skill for working with numbers.

Prep-Year 2 students engaging in focussed curriculum lessons with Prac Teacher, Miss Sandy Andrews Year 3-4 students in reading groups using e-books

Year 5-6 students in reading groups working on comprehension and vocab through both traditional pencil and paper activities as well as online learning through IXL English.

Dear Parents, We are hosting a Scholastic Book Fair!

Our Book Fair theme for 2018 is Paws for Books: Come. Stay. Read a Great Tale!

Readers will find purr-fect books and have a dog-gone good time at this season’s Book Fair!

Book Fair will start Monday the 14th of May and finish Friday the 18th of May. The Fair will be open 8:30am to 9am and 3pm to 4pm Daily.

Parents and community members are VERY welcome!!

Research shows that parental involvement at home, independent reading at school, and the power of book choice all help make frequent readers. In fact, the Australian Kids and Family Reading Report shows that an overwhelming 91 % of kids aged 9–11 and 93% of kids aged 6–8 agree that their favourite books to read are the ones they have picked out themselves. A Scholastic Book Fair is the perfect place for your child to discover new books and ignite their love for reading. Every purchase you make earns learning and literacy resources for our school! Parents, please consider donating a book to our “Classroom Wish List” where books purchased are put into our school library. Such books will enrich the education of children for years to come. Your generosity will be recognized with a bookplate identifying your family as the donor. All donations are greatly appreciated. More books means more choice, which means kids get to read the books they want to read. The right book can ignite a passion for reading, so we encourage families to work together to create a reading culture at home. Reading expands the mind, nourishes the imagination, and opens a world of possible. Every Scholastic Book Fair is packed with a multitude of genres, including fantasy, classics, reference, award-winners, humour, nonfiction and mystery. We believe the best selection encompasses books suitable for both girls and boys within each age.

So hop on down to our ‘Paws for Books’ Book Fair and chews a good book!
