District 29-I Newsletter June 2018
“Moving Forward Together”
Between Us Lions
Fellow Lions and Lionesses!
As we are heading into the last month of this Lions year, I can look
back over the accomplishments of District 29-I with great pride. I
have many fond memories of my travels these last three years with
my friend and brothers; Al, Rusty and Don. It has made this year’s time, as governor, fly away so
quickly. And as I visited clubs in our District, I was so amazed by all the wonderful service projects
that were accomplished by even the smallest clubs.
When visiting the clubs this year, I attempted to encourage changes to meet the challenges of
today and into the future, asking each club to think seriously about their legacy as we started the
second century of Lionism.
The District started out with a bang at our Fall Conference with the “Parade of Checks”. We
totaled out to the tune of $62,106.00. It was truly a success. Our LCIF donations are fast approaching
100% of each club in our District for the 3rd year in row. The LCIF donations received to date total
$23,870, close to $4,000 over last year’s figures. And this year we have challenged our clubs to that
100% donation to the WVLSCF and we are so close to that goal. I would like to thank PDG Glenn
Ryburn, PCC Albert Cox and PDG Dave Nicholson for spearheading these efforts. And this could
only have been accomplished by the Lions in our District, who say “WE SERVE.”
Thanks to the many Lions that came out to start our second year of a five year plan to develop
new Lions Clubs and to help existing clubs to grow. Again, this year we have some good news. We
have chartered two new Lions Clubs, one in Weston and another new club in Martinsburg. Both
clubs are a specialty club of young professionals, involved with the addiction crisis. I am proud to
say that the Nutter Fort Lions Club is sponsoring the Weston Centennial Lions Club and that the Fort
Ashby Lions Club is the sponsor of the Martinsburg Centennial Lions Club. I would like to thank
these Lions for stepping up to be the new chartered clubs “Guiding Lions.” Weston Centennial Lions
Club will have as their Guiding Lions: PID Steve Glass and PCC Al Cox and the Martinsburg
Centennial Lions Club: PCC Doug Long, with assistance from PDG Glenn Ryburn and DGE Rob
Bright.
Another thing I am very proud of is that our club reporting to MyLCI is improving every
quarter this year and I want to thank each and every Club Secretary in our District for taking the time
to do so. Our reporting on membership is up to 68% and reporting on club activities went from 48%
to 61%. To date the district has a total of 42,410 Lion hours of service and 1,520 service activities.
We still have a way to go to achieve our goal, but we’re on our way. Keep up the good work.
Our membership numbers could and should be better; at the writing of this article we have a
total of 112 new members and 152 drops, which unfortunately included 23 deaths. We have one
month to bring our figures up and we will do it.
I am very excited about our new incoming leadership team: DG Rob Bright, FVDG Ruth
Straley and SVDG John Mason. I have the upmost confidence in them and I know that the transition
will be smooth and I will support them in every way I can. My sincere thanks to each of them for
their unselfish dedication to Lionism. I also want to thank CST, Mary Jane Bright, who did
everything asked of her and was absolutely my right arm throughout the year.
I also would like to thank the members of my Cabinet, I appreciate the support they provided
to me and to the clubs. There is a special Lion that I would like to thank, she has been a close
working companion this year and that is my Newsletter Editor Lion Mickey Nardella. Her dedicated
service to Lionism and to give the District the information that keeps up “Moving Forward Together”
is unmatched.
I want to thank each and every Club President for their leadership this year. Thanks to the
Multiple District Chairs for their service and efforts. I will always cherish the friendship of my fellow
District Governors LeeAnn Welch, Tom Crouser, CC Cindy Glass and MD Sec/Tres Doug Long.
This being my final newsletter as your District Governor I wish you all health, wealth and
much happiness as we further serve the less fortunate throughout our community and the world.
Finally, I thank my love of my life, Lion Paula for letting me chase my dreams and ambitions.
I wouldn’t be able to do it if it wasn’t for your love and support. Love ya!! Ken
MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER!
LION ROB BRIGHT, FIRST VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR
It is hard to believe that the Lions year is almost over. This article is going to be all
about thanking Lions. I would like to thank all 29 I Lion Clubs for loading their PU
101 data into MyLCI. This has abled me to get a jump start on the Directory.
Special thanks to DG Ken for helping to ensure this task was accomplished. I have
sent an email out to each club president and secretary for verification of the
information.
I would like to thank PID Steve Glass, PCC Al Cox, DG Ken Shanan and the
Clarksburg Lions Club for the outstanding job they did planning and implementing the MD 29 WV Lions
State Convention. It was a fun and informative weekend. My hats off to you all.
My last appreciation and thanks is for our current District Governor Ken Shanan for all his hard work. On
a personal level, I want to thank DG Ken for all his assistance and knowledge that he shared with me. DG
Ken displays his leadership ability daily. I treasure his friendship.
I look forward to the upcoming year as I become your new District Governor.
The 101st Annual International Convention is to be held June 29 – July 3, 2018 in Las Vegas, NV.
If I can provide any assistance to you or your club, please do not hesitate to contact me by telephone at
304-298-4304 or email me at [email protected].
Together, Let’s Make a Difference.
FVDG Rob Bright
Ruth Straley, Second Vice District Governor
This is my last message as Second Vice District Governor. I am excited about the election to First
Vice District Governor for 2018-2019. I appreciate all of the support I received in my quest for a
higher office. I look forward to working with District Governor Elect Rob Bright and getting to
know Second Vice District Governor Elect John Mason in the coming year. I hope to get to know
many more members in our District during the coming year.
Please pay your dues by June 30, 2018 and emphasize to every Lion member that they must pay by that date or be
dropped as a member. Lions International threw us quite a challenge when they changed the membership rules so
a club will not be reimbursed for any member dues they pay and the member has not yet paid the club on 1 July or
second half on 1 January. In the past it was a regular practice for clubs to pay dues for those they knew would pay
sometime after July 1 or January 1 and then be reimbursed by LCI the dues they paid when the members actually
paid. This also was encouraged because it made club and district membership look larger on June 30. So whatever
you do, please get invoices to all club members and stress that they will be dropped on June 30 if the invoices for at
least half year dues are not paid. The same will be true if members pay one half year and they have not paid the
second half by December 31. The bright side of this is the members who don’t pay in time can be reinstated within
six months if their dues are paid. Clubs can pay from their Admin funds for members who suffer financial hardship
and cannot pay their dues on time if approved by the members.
The other big change that I am certain will be discussed elsewhere in this newsletter is the change to submitting the
service activities in a new application called “My Lion” and the input of the activities is expanded from the secretary
only to other club officers. I am scheduled to learn more about My Lion in a webinar this week and I am hoping it is
an easy transition.
Congratulations to District Governor Ken Shahan who was elected Council Chair by his fellow Governors and to Lion
Cindy Glass who served as Council Chair for the past year. We are fortunate to have such strong leaders in District
29-I.
Happy New Year as we embark on a year of change and volunteerism.
Ruth Straley
It’s Not Too Late, BUT Time is Short
There is only one month left in which to become a Centennial Sponsor. EVERY Lion can
become a Centennial Sponsor by sponsoring one new member. After the new member
has remained a Lion for one year and one day, the sponsor receives a Silver Centennial
Lion award, after two years and a day, the sponsor receives a Gold Centennial Lion award,
and after three years and a day, the sponsor receives a Diamond Centennial Lion award.
Would your club like to try some new service projects or fund-raising events? Do you need some additional help for
existing programs? The answer could be “new members”. When talking to prospective members be sure to tell
them about the difference you are making in your community. Tell stories of the ways your service has changed
lives—yours or others. Invite them to help with one of your service projects. Ask them what they would like to do,
and what they think the community needs. Maybe the club can help them and create a vital, new project.
When looking for new members, don’t forget to check in with members who have left your club. Some may have
had business or personal issues that forced them to drop out, and those circumstances may have changed now. Or
they may have been dissatisfied with your club for some reason that has now been resolved. Listen to what they
say, and even if they don’t rejoin, you may learn something that will help you retain existing members or attract
new ones.
Be sure your club has an active membership team that is working to grow your club. Lions International has many
resources to help. Remember, members are important—we can’t serve without them.

LEADERSHIP MEETINGS
In the past we have held “Officer Training’ meetings each May or June. In this addition of the Newsletter you will see a schedule of what I am calling “Leadership Meetings”. These meetings are not just for next year’s officers, but will be for all Lions. The goal is to get your clubs next year off to a good start. At this time, I am in the process of contacting present and future Zone Chairpersons, present and past club officers and others to ask “What do you want to know” and “What will assist you in having a great Lions Year”. Don’t be surprised if you receive emails from me asking you to send me your questions or priorities. It would be impossible to train “Club Officers” in a meeting that will last approximately one to one and half hours, so the process of training Lions will be an ongoing activity not just a one-shot deal. It has been my experience that Lions learn best when they need to know, for example the week before the District Governors visit is when your clubs will have questions about the visit.
Suggestions I have received and topics included in the “Leadership Meeting” include: I hear there are some changes in reporting activities next year. Is it true there will be no grace period for dropping members in June? Can we have a way to share ideas about membership, service activities, and fund rising activities? What can we do about the declining membership? We need to develop future leaders. What do I need to do to get started on the new Lions year? Where can I get answers when I need them?
I hope all the Lions in your club that are past leaders, present leaders and future leaders will take time to attend one of the meetings on the schedule. You can attend any meeting regardless of the Zone in which your club is located. If you have questions email me at [email protected].

The 96th MD 29 Convention: Final Thoughts
By PID Steve Glass, Convention Chairperson
Our MD Convention, which was held the weekend of May 4-6, 2018 at Lakeview Golf Resort & Conference
Center was by all accounts a very huge success! Our goals were to add some variety in our entertainment, provide good
meals, offer some different orientation and learning opportunities, and to provide an environment for fun and fellowship.
I believe that we achieved our goals in all four of those areas. There are many Lions to thank for a successful convention
so I will attempt to recognize and thank as many as I can remember.
Let me begin by thanking all of you who attended all or any part of the weekend. You made it possible to have a
convention! Without you, all of the planning and effort would go for naught. Our entertainers, our vendor, and all of
those who provided favors for our hospitality bags, have each received a personal hand-written thank you from yours
truly. Kudos and gratitude go to PCCs Kris and Doug for some wonderful and informative club officer training. I can’t
say enough good things about Megan Reeler and the entire Lakeview staff who met our every need at every moment of
the weekend. Thank you to all of our multiple district chairpersons who brought displays! You were awesome!
Last, but certainly not least, to the members of my home club, the Lions Club of Clarksburg -thank you! You
made it all come together so seamlessly. To the Council of Governors, my deepest gratitude to you for giving me the
latitude to take some risks and do things differently and to all of the candidates for first and second vice district governor,
we thank you for providing the hospitality room for the weekend. It was the scene of much fun, laughter, and goodwill!
Finally, a full financial report will be presented to the Council of Governors at its July 28th meeting at Flatwoods.
I can tell you now that the convention was profitable, I encourage everyone to mark your calendar now for next year’s
convention at Flatwoods under the capable leadership of PCC Kris Pinkerman. I would also encourage any club to step
up and offer to host a future convention in a site in your district. If you receive the kind of support that I did for this
year’s convention, it will be a breeze! It was a pleasure serving you!

MD 29 Global Leadership Team Final Report By PID Steve Glass
As this is the final article for this Lion year, I wanted to review for you where we have been, and where we are
headed on this three-year journey. We began this year with four distinct goals:
1. Increase cooperation and communication between and among MD GLT, GMT, and GST and district GLT,
GMT, and GST.
We have achieved this goal as evidenced by meetings held in August and at every district conference and through the implementation of conference calls using the GoToMeeting app.
2. Increase the number of newly-identified leaders in every district.
We have achieved this goal as evidenced by the thirty-four first-time attendees at our Lions of West Virginia Leadership Retreat and the thirty first-time attendees at our MD 29 Convention.
3. Increase the number of leadership opportunities and tools available in the multiple district.
We have provided learning seminars at every district conference through using our International Directors and Third Vice President Haynes Townsend at the MD Convention in additional to the various seminars during the LWVLR. Lion Chris Doty has created a hotlink off of our MD webpage that includes folders on Membership, Leadership, Service, and LCIF. This is a work in progress and is one of our goals going forward into the new year.
4. Ensure that each district develops a leadership development plan for 2017-2018 by September 30, 2017.
This has been achieved through all of the efforts reported for 1-3 above.
Going forward into the new year, I would encourage every incoming club officer to take advantage of the
training opportunities that have already been scheduled in your district. I know that the district GLT coordinators have
shared with me the dates and locations for their orientations and leadership meetings. Take advantage of these! Also,
every club officer should look at the club officer e-books that are available on the LCI web page. This provides an easy
way to learn your role in the comfort of your own home or office at your own pace.
Finally, I want to encourage every Lion to attend this year’s USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum in Columbus,
Ohio. I assure you that this is some of the finest leadership development opportunity and orientation that you will ever
get! Once you go, you will make this a part of your Lionistic experience. The date is September 20-22, 2018. Check it
out at www.lionsforum.org. You’ll be glad you did!
Thank you for a great year! Until we meet again, thank you for your service and leadership.
Steve
Dear Club Officer,
Starting on June 30, 2018, dues credits for membership drops will not be issued after the
release of the semi-annual billings on July 1 and January 1.
In the past, Lions Clubs International has given clubs a grace period in January and July to adjust
their club rosters and receive a credit for unreported membership drops. This practice has been a
courtesy extended to clubs by Lions International despite rules governing the practice in Board
Policy. The board of directors recently decided that enforcement of existing policy is necessary in
order to be in compliance with Board Policy.
Semi-annual dues are billed based on our records on January 1 and July 1 of each year. This
means that clubs must update their membership rosters by June 30 and December 31
respectively to ensure they receive an accurate billing statement that reflects their club’s
membership. Members dropped after the release of the semi-annual dues billing will no longer be
credited.
Here are a few best practices that can help you prepare for your July billing:
• Update your club roster online using MyLCI or your regional reporting system.
• Submit your updated membership roster to MyLCI or your local reporting system by June
30, 2018 CDT.
• Inform current and incoming club leaders that membership dues credits will no longer be
issued.
Please contact Accounts Receivable and Club Account Services at
[email protected] if you have any questions. And thank you for all of the
kindness and tremendous service that you bring to your community.
Sincerely,
Tony Benbow

Hello everyone,
During the summer of 2018 we will be sending out 6 youth
going to Japan, Italy and Germany. We will host 2 students
each from Germany, Italy, Japan and 1 from Finland. I am
finalizing host families for the students from Finland and Italy.
I am attaching my last essay until September. It is important to me that our
Lions around the state get the opportunity to hear from both the students we
send out and from our guests coming in from other countries. The Youth Exchange program brings
people together from around the world and allows them to learn something about another country
and their culture. Each student is an ambassador for their country and hopefully this will have some
impact as they become our future leaders.
Our last essay is from Rino Utaka from Okayama, Japan. Rino was a very quiet girl as I suspect she
had to work hard with her English. Enjoy.
I had an exciting time this summer. I went to the state of West Virginia in the U.S. in order to
do a home stay from August 3 to August 28. I could experience many things I cannot in
Japan. These are the best memories of my life. I was very excited when I could go to an
amusement park with my host family. And I was very surprised when I saw some “Zero” at
the air and space museum. And then, my host family took me to various places so I could
learn about American history. My host family was very kind and cheerful. I really appreciate
what they have done for me.
It was the first time for me to do a home stay. I had a lot of things I wanted to tell and talk with my host family but I
could not put them in words well. So, this home stay became good stimulation for me to study more of English.
It was nice meeting them. I will never forget the memories with them. I’m looking forward to meeting them
someday. Thank you very much. Rino
AT THE END OF THE DAY, HOWEVER IT IS ALL ABOUT SERVICE – WE SERVE
Lions Clubs Service Chairs – Changes are coming to LCI Service Reporting – as of July 1, 2018 :
YOU • Can report service activities • Can see signature service activities. • Can see service activity goals. • Can conduct an advanced search for service activities worldwide. I encourage each Lions Club to elect or appoint a Club Service Chair as one of your Club Officers. MORE LATER on the LCI changes - In the meantime, look-up “MY LION” as an app on your smart phone.
Starting in July, I would like for each Zone Chair to pick a “Service Event” to report in the District Newsletter.
As an example: Berkeley Springs Lions Club has agreed to a long-term project to:
Help Regan Byrne Stay Healthy with a Diabetic Service Dog!
Since January 1, 2017 Regan Byrne has been battleing Type One Diabetes (T1D), an autoimmune disease where the body
attacks the pancreas thus killing it and making it unable to produce insulin, the chemical needed to turn carbohydrates
into energy for the body which is life threatening. Due to this, her parents have to be her pancreas and give her up to
eight shots a day. They also have to continuously be watchful of high and low blood sugars which can lead to heart
disease, blindness, limb amputation, kidney failure, coma, and seizure which can result in death. This is why a diabetic
service dog, which can detect highs and lows 30 to 40 mintues before hand, is a vital tool to Regan’s treatment.
As a fundraiser for this project, the Club had a “Bowl-a-Thon for Regan Byrne” on
Sunday afternoon (05/20/2018). Their were15 teams with 53 people participating. The
event has raised $1950 toward our goal of $15,000. We still need to raise $4,310.
Regan had a great time, along with the other participants. We had people from youth
church group to teachers to senior citizens.
Regan is on the left with a pink top.
