Lions, Lionesses, and Leos of District 14 B:
It is hard to believe that with the beautiful weather we have so far this fall, winter
is just around the corner which means cold weather. Most of us have options when
it comes to dealing with winter. We can stay primarily indoors in our heated
homes and work places, we can embrace the winter season by participating in
winter activities or we can avoid the situation by just heading to the Sunbelt until
spring arrives or any combination of the above. However, for many in our region,
the options may consist of either having food on their tables or heating their
homes. While we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving with our families and friends
let’s try to remember the less fortunate by donating to local food banks. Perhaps
we could prepare dinners and food baskets or donate gently used winter clothing.
Also, let’s not forget the victims from the recent hurricanes and our military
personnel serving our country. Talking about the military, I just want to say
“thank you” to all the veterans out there for service to our country as we honor our military veterans on
Veteran’s Day.
I was extremely pleased with the turnout we had at the Rigatoni/ Fall Rally/ Passing of the Banner Night on
October 10th. It was really great to see so many of you at a District function and thank you to all who attended.
With this event completed it soon will be time to start thinking about the District Spring Party which is
tentatively scheduled for the last weekend in April. If anyone has any ideas or thoughts as to what they would
like to see or do at it, please contact either IPDG Rich Keller or myself. My goal is to have District events be
something members want to go to rather than something they feel obligated to attend.
Since this is the time of the year to be thankful, I would like to say that one of the things that I am thankful for
is the Lions Clubs in our District. So far, I have made visitations to about half the clubs in the District and have
been impressed with the commitment of the clubs to serving their communities and the world. I am also
thankful that the clubs are all committed to increasing membership and the fact they bring up the membership
issue in a positive way before I talk about it.
In conclusion, Mary Ann and I would like to wish everyone a very happy and safe Thanksgiving.

Fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leos and friends of District 14-B,
Fall started out quite warm, but during the past week, we have seen more normal Autumn
temperatures; we may still have some warm days during our usual Indian Summer. Enjoy
those days because winter is less than two months away.
I want to thank everyone who participated in last months, District 14-B and Glassport
Lions Club Combined Fall Rally, Passing of the Banner and 51st Annual Rigatoni Night. 157 Lions, Leos and guests
representing 21 clubs in District 14-B attended and I’m sure that everyone had a fun time. This was a much better
showing than we’ve had for Fall Rallies, Banner Passing or Rigatoni Nights in recent years.
Please plan to attend the 2017 Multiple District 14 Fall Leadership Symposium that will be held on Sunday, November 5
at the Westmoreland County Blind Association, 911 Main Street, Greensburg, PA 15601. The Symposium will take place
from 12-5 p.m. There will be snacks. There are topics for all levels of Lionism and all Lions are encouraged to attend.

The District’s 2nd Cabinet Meeting will take place on Saturday, November 11th at the Western PA School for the
Blind at 9 AM. The address is 201 North Bellfield Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. There will also be a training session
for club Presidents and Secretaries at the same time in a different room. Along with training, we plan to provide a live
demonstration of MyLCI. All Lions are welcome to attend either the Cabinet Meeting or the training session. There will
be a light continental breakfast for those in attendance. If you are coming to the Cabinet Meeting or training session,
please RSVP to Coordinator of District Activities IPDG Rich Keller at [email protected] by Thursday,
November 9th. When you RSVP, please state whether you are coming for the Cabinet Meeting or the training
session, so we can make sure to have enough food and training materials.
I want to remind everyone that this is the last year of our centennial service challenge from Lions Clubs International.
Legacy projects can be completed through June 2018, so you still have eight months to complete a Legacy project.
Also, Lions Clubs International has added a new diabetes focus to the other service areas of hunger, environment, and
sight. The youth focus is being combined into the other areas and we are encouraged to include youth in all we do. World
diabetes awareness day is on November 14th, so this would be a wonderful time to have a project in this area and let our
communities know that Lions are now focusing on diabetes.
Finally, if your Club has not already done so, I encourage you to plan a community membership drive to promote Lionism
and encourage prospective members to join our great cause. There may be many who would love to be part of our
organization; they simply need to learn about us and receive the encouragement to serve. I wish you all well in your
continued service and thank you for making a difference.

quality of the citrus, a substantial increase in price, and our decrease in sales over
the past few years. We feel we must cancel our Annual Citrus Sale this year. We

veterans. To those whose names do not appear, we offer our apologies, and to those who are
no longer with us, we offer our deepest sympathy and gratitude for their service.
Veterans Day is an official United States public holiday, observed annually on
November 11, that honors military veterans, that is, persons who served in the
United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including
Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries that
mark the anniversary of the end of World War I; major hostilities of World War I
were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918,
when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States
previously observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans
Day in 1954.

World Diabetes Day
World Diabetes Day is coming up on Tuesday, November 14. That's when Lions and Leos around the world
will elevate the fight against diabetes.
We're asking your club officers to schedule a club meeting on that date, or during our Worldwide Week of Service for
Diabetes from November 13–19.
Every Lions Club should start talking about diabetes during this week. Please encourage your officers and
fellow club members to get involved.
In the meantime, check on-line for updates and info to share with your friends on World Diabetes Day.

Greetings!
It is my immense pleasure to send you best-wishes for your remarkable tenure of District Governor. You might
have visited Nepal, if not remember in your convenient time. We the Lions in Nepal are eagerly waiting to hear
from our respected Lions Leaders like you. For your kind information, Nepal is a landlocked multiethnic,
multilingual, multi-religious country. Our District 325 B2 Nepal has 318 Lions Clubs and covers 45%
geographical areas of the Country.
Emergency support, leadership training, sight for kids’ projects, one club one project, senior citizen residential
park, diabetes clinic are some focus in our District. As a District Leader, we are encouraging clubs in numbers of
service projects and coordinate with the abroad Districts or Clubs who have same interest and willing to join to
these projects.
The main concern is to develop friendship and very much hopeful in these regards. If any Lions in your District
are willing for FRIENDSHIP VIIST to NEPAL, we will facilitate them.

Lions Club of Kathmandu, the first Lions Club in Kathmandu and second in the
country, Nepal, was established in 1972 in the initiation of 50 young leaders of the
society. The club was brought into foundation as inspired from the slogan ‘WE
SERVE’, to create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for
humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services throughout community
involvement and international co-operation. The club was chartered on 12th July
1972 by the International Association of Lions Clubs.

Each year, every sub-district in Pennsylvania has the opportunity to present two Pennsylvania Counsellors
Distinguished Service Awards. This award is limited to one per club per year and only one award per District
may be presented to a Past District Governor. Persons who have received a prior Pennsylvania Counsellors
Distinguished Service Award, International Leadership Award, Lions International President’s Award, or the
Lions International Ambassador of Goodwill Award are not eligible for this award.
The following lists the criteria to earn this award:
• Have served at least 10 years as a Lion
• Have earned at least 5 years of perfect attendance
• Shall have served as either President or Secretary of the club or have displayed exemplary service
• Must be a Lion in good standing in a Lions club in good standing within the District within the Multiple
District.
Application for this award shall be submitted by the Lions Club President to the President/Chairman of the Past
District Governor’s organization within the sub-district. All candidates will be reviewed by the Long-Range
Planning Committee of District 14B and the committee will recommend its selection to the chairman and the
District Governor. The President/Chairman shall endorse the recommendation through the District Governor to
the President of the Pennsylvania Counsellors.
Applications shall be on the prescribed forms furnished by the Pennsylvania Counsellors and must be received at
least two weeks prior to the February State Council meeting. (1)
All applications must be submitted to the Chairman of the Long-Range Planning Committee by December 31,
2016.

During the Whitehall Community Lions Steak Fry on August 23th, District Governor Geoff Temple presented
Lion Paul Varnum his much-deserved Melvin Jones Fellowship. He has been a Lion since November 1, 1988.
Paul has been the co-chairperson of our “Night at the Races” for the two years. He has been the highest seller
of our last 2 raffle fundraisers. He is always willing to help when the help is needed. Outside of our club, Paul
is active with Meals on Wheels.

Whitehall Community Lions attended the Glassport Lions Club’s Rigatoni Night, where the Passing of the
Banner Ceremony took place and the District’s Fall Rally. Lion Mary Ann Belles, Lion Elaine Frombach, PDG

Whitehall Community Lions Club recently co-sponsored the Halloween Spooktacular at Caste Village in
Whitehall. The club passed out candy to the children that attended and then judged the costumes. The club
members that volunteered are Lion Elaine Frombach, Lion Diane Gallagher, Lion Maryann Miller, PDG Bill
Gazica, PDG John Frombach and Lion Richard Miller. Also pictured are the Families that won the competition

51st Annual Glassport Lions Rigatoni Night and District 14-Fall Rally
and Passing the Banner
For the first time the District and the Glassport Lions Club joined together to combine the Rigatoni Night and
the District Fall Rally. The event was held on Tuesday October 12th at the Queen of the Rosary Parish Social
Hall in Glassport. With 160 Lions, Leos and guests attending, the event was very successful. The crowd
represented 21 of the 34 Lions clubs from the District and 1 Leo club.
The guest speaker for the event was the State Global Service Coordinator PDG Tom Gregg. PDG Tom
explained that the Lions worldwide will be focusing on diabetes awareness and how Lions can help.
District Governor Geoff spoke about the service that the Lions of the District have been involved in. District
project Operation Safety Net, the installation of a Lion Drink fountain in South Park, working with a youth
summer camp to perform maintenance on homes owned by elderly people, and installing a stair lift in a church
so elderly parishioner can attend church services which are held on the second floor of the church.

Spotlight on Lion Ernie
A member of the McKeesport Lions Club
for over 6 years, Ernie Oatneal always has
a smile on his face. Ernie has participated
in many fundraisers and projects of the
club, including Concerts in the Park, litter
cleanup along Eden Park Boulevard, Bell
Ringing for the Salvation Army, Pasta Dinners,
and Salute to Santa Parades, to just name a
few. Ernie is a proud, medal decorated
Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, and a
member of other service clubs in the area
as well. He and his wife Gloria are proud
parents and grandparents.
Members of the McKeesport Lions Club recently took part in a litter clean-up along a stretch of Eden Park
Blvd. that they have adopted, and picked up 12 bags of litter and a tire. Members participating included (l to r)
