We can better enjoy Christmas—all 12 days of it,
from Christmas Day to Epiphany—if we revive
Advent as a period of preparation. Abstaining
from meat on Fridays, or not eating at all between
meals, is a good way to revive the Advent fast.
(Not eating Christmas cookies or listening to
Christmas music before Christmas is another.) We
can incorporate such customs as the Advent
wreath, the Saint Andrew Christmas Novena, and
the Jesse Tree into our daily ritual, and we can set
some time aside for special scripture readings for
Advent, which remind us of the threefold coming
of Christ.
Holding off on putting up the Christmas tree and
other decorations is another way to remind our-
selves that the feast is not here yet. Traditionally,
such decorations were put up on Christmas Eve,
but they would not be taken down until after
Epiphany, in order to celebrate the Christmas sea-
son to its fullest.

GOSPEL MEDITATION
During these last Sundays of the liturgical year, our attention turns to
the end times when all things will, once again, be properly ordered in
Christ. They remind us that our actions should always be done out of
love for God. The resurrection gives us confident hope and reveals
that love overcomes evil. Are my actions motivated by the opinion of
others or Gospel values revealed by Jesus and the Holy Spirit through
the living tradition of the Church? Do I choose to do what is right and
just, merciful and loving?
justo, misericordioso y amoroso?

WORD OF LIFE
“Suicidal individuals—with or without a terminal illness—typically
do not want to die; they want to escape what they perceive to be an
intolerable situation, and they inaccurately believe that suicide is their
only way out.” — “Every Suicide is Tragic,”
32nd Sunday in Ordinary time The first reading today is the moving story of Jewish martyrs
willing to die for their faith rather than break the dietary laws
of their faith. What are we willing to sacrifice for others? The
principles of Catholic Social Teaching cover everything from
human life to the environment. They teach us about care for
the poor and vulnerable, the importance of family; the im-
portance of solidarity. Are we willing to give of ourselves, to
understand these principles until they shape our lives and are
as important to us as the law of Moses was to those in the first
reading?
Today is our annual diocesan Catholic Services
Appeal. The Catholic Services Appeal gives us the
opportunity to act together as a diocesan family:
helping those in need, promoting a culture of life,
encouraging religious vocation, and educating our
youth. Every gift, regardless of the size, is vital to
the success of the Catholic Services Appeal. Our goal this
year is to have 100% participation. Please give in accordance
with your means.
nuestra juventud.
You are invited to experience God in a manner
that is both personal and communal. It is rooted
in the Pascal Mystery. Come and surrender to
Jesus and begin a new life with Him. Registration
are available in the office for the Women’s
ACTS Retreat on November 10th –13th.
