Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time:

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us: “I want you to observe that this

poor widow contributed more than all the others who donated to

the treasury. They gave from their surplus wealth, but she gave

from her want, all that she had to live on.”

Ask yourself “Am I only giving from my surplus wealth?” and

then put your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor

box so that those who are suffering will be able to know God’s

love and care.

A Message from Fr Ryan:

We celebrate our Remembrance Mass this week in order to pray for those who have died over the past

year. It is our duty and special privilege to pray for the dead, that they be purged of their imperfections and

rest in the peace of heavenly life. You and I contribute to their work of purification by gaining something

called “indulgences.”

“An indulgence is the remission of temporal punishment from sins already forgiven” – that’s a mouthful!

Think of it like this: when you or I sin, our sin does not only hurt ourselves and our relationship with God, but

because we are joined to everyone the world over by our baptism, even our most private sins harm the entire

Church. The damage we cause is like graffiti painted on the Mystical Body of Christ. Somehow, some way,

that damage must be repaired.

Indulgences are the work of repairing the spiritual damage our sins cause. Even better, our indulgences also

can repair the damage that others do. This month, the Vatican has extended a special permission for gaining

indulgences for the dead. Combined with prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father, sacramental

confession within 20 days, and reception of Holy Communion within 8 days, you may gain a plenary (or total)

indulgence for the dead every day in the month of November. This can be done by visiting a cemetery or, if

you are unable to be present physically, expressing a desire to visit a cemetery. Don’t forget to pray for the

dead this month – they need you!

Yours,

Father Ryan Hilderbrand
