MVC COACH OF THE YEAR MVC COACH OF THE YEAR RETURNS FOR SECOND SEASONRETURNS FOR SECOND SEASON Darian DeVries, the 2018-19 Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year, is in his second season as the head coach of the Drake men’s basketball program. The longtime assistant from Creighton took the reins of the Bulldog program in March, 2018, and inherited a roster with just one returning starter and three returning contributors. He quickly assembled a talented roster and let that squad to its first regular-season Missouri Valley Conference title since 2008 and the program’s 12th all-time postseason appearance. Under his guidance, the Bulldogs led the Val-ley in scoring at 75.4 points per game to rack up 24 wins and record the program’s sixth 20-win season and third-most wins in school history. DeVries’ first recruiting class at Drake included a junior college All-American, graduate transfers with all-conference pedigrees, a 7-footer and in-ternational talent. That roster eventually earned eight All-MVC honors, including MVC Defensive Player of the Year Nick McGlynn. His first team began the season by winning the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic to con-clude the non-conference schedule with a 12-4 record before amassing a 12-6 mark in confer-ence action. Before taking over the Bulldogs’ program, DeVries was an assistant coach at Creighton University for 17 years and spent 20 total sea-sons on staff with the Bluejays. During that span, he helped guide the Bluejays to 19 postseason appearances and 12 NCAA Tournament berths. DeVries, 44, was one of the longest-tenured men’s basketball assistant coaches at one school in the nation and assisted the Bluejays in their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last seven years before earning the Drake position. During his time on the Creighton staff under both Dana Altman and Greg McDermott, the program accumulated a record of 460-211 and 231-129 in conference games. Under his guidance, Creighton had 15 first-team all-conference selections, six conference Players of the Year, three Newcomers of the Year, three Freshmen of the Year and three Defensive Players of the Year. CU has also had six All-American honorees in that time, including Doug McDermott, the first player in 30 years to be named a First Team All-American by the AP in

three straight seasons. At Creighton, DeVries worked closely with the Bluejay backcourt and did much of the scouting of the opposition. DeVries also played a signifi-cant role in the recruitment of future standouts, including five-star center Justin Patton in 2015, who redshirted before turning into the No. 16 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Chi-cago Bulls. In 2011-12, the Bluejays tied a school record with 29 wins and followed that with 28 and 27 wins in the successive seasons as part of a span of 18 20-win seasons in his 20 years in Omaha. Before joining the staff at then Missouri Val-ley Conference member Creighton in 1998, he already had an extensive background in the Val-ley as a starter at UNI under coach Eldon Miller. DeVries ranks 31st all-time in career scoring at UNI with 1,084 points and was twice an MVC Scholar-Athlete Team selection. The two-time UNI captain led the Panthers in three-point shooting three years and converted on 44 per-cent of his attempts as a senior with 3.1 assists per game. DeVries graduated from UNI in 1998 with a B.A. in elementary education and a minor in physical education. He earned his master’s degree in college counseling from Creighton in 2000. DeVries was a standout athlete in high school at Aplington-Parkersburg (Iowa), and in the spring of 2015 was inducted into the IHSAA Hall of Fame for his playing prowess. The oldest of five siblings, DeVries’ family boasts a tremen-dous academic pedigree with all five competing collegiately. His brother, Jared, was an All-American on the football team at the University of Iowa and was a 12-year member of the Detroit Lions, while another brother, Dusty, also played football for the Hawkeyes. His youngest brother, Jay, played football at Wartburg College and his sister, Jodi, was a Second Team All-MVC selec-tion in volleyball at Northern Iowa. Darian and his wife, Ashley, have one son, Tucker (17) and one daughter, Tatum (11).

MATT WOODLEYA Des Moines native and former Drake men’s basketball standout, Woodley boasts extensive and diverse experience at the professional, collegiate and high school levels. He has coached 21 future NBA players including Klay Thompson and Hassan Whiteside in addition to serv-ing as the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies D-League and an assistant for

the franchise’s summer league teams. As a three-year starter at Drake, Woodley played in 83 games and was twice named honorable mention All-MVC and the team MVP as a senior.

LARRY BLUNTSpent the previous two seasons as an assistant at Canisius where he helped guide the Golden Griffins to a share of the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season title with a 15-3 conference record and an overall mark of 21-12. The league title was the program’s first since 1993-94 and the 21 wins tied the school record for regular season

wins. The squad advanced to the postseason with a CBI ap-pearance, its fifth postseason appearance in six years, and three student-athletes earned All-MAAC honors.

MARTY RICHTERA native of Waterloo, Iowa, and a Simp-son College graduate, Richter joined the Drake staff after two extremely suc-cessful seasons as the head coach at Florida SouthWestern State College. At Florida SouthWestern State College, he amassed a record of 56-10 in two sea-sons. Last season, the Buccaneers went 30-3, were ranked as high as No. 2 in the

NJCAA poll and were one win away from advancing to the final four of the national tournament.
