Saying Farewell to Beloved Employees

We will sincerely miss both Ann Josey, Marketing Manager for TALMAGE TERRACE/LANIER GARDENS and

Robert (Bob) Exley, retired Senior Maintenance Mechanic from BRANAN LODGE who recently passed away.

Ann passed away on Wednesday, May 29, following a heroic battle with lung disease. After a long, successful career in sales and advertising, including many years at the Athens Banner Herald, Ann joined the Team at TALMAGE TERRACE /LANIER GARDENS as Marketing Manager, where she

remained until taking a leave of absence. Ann’s heart was dedicated to helping seniors find a place to call home. She was a member of Athens First UMC. Ann was a strong-willed southern belle, who was forever gracious and never met a stranger. She was a mother to most and an advocate for all. She loved hard and without condition, includ-ing caring many years for her husband, the late Benny Higginbotham. She is survived by her brother Mark Josey of Sharpsburg, a host of close friends that she called family, and her beloved fur-niece, Chloe.

Bob, who retired from BRANAN LODGE in December 2018 for medical reasons, was Senior Maintenance Mechanic for 12 years and passed away on Tuesday, June 11. Bob served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and was a retired electrician with the Seven-Eleven. He is survived by his wife of 38 yrs, Maxine Brinthaupt Exley; daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and Shane Brown and Colleen and Ron Johnson; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

CELEBRATING NATIONAL NURSING ASSISTANTS WEEK AT WESLEY WOODS

WESLEY WOODS SENIOR LIVING would like to celebrate and recognize all the Nursing Assistants that take such good care of the residents every day. National Nursing Assistants Week is June 13–20. Thank you for all you do at WESLEY WOODS!

ST. JOHN TOWERS IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Amanda Mershon, Residen-tial Administrator, received a $2,500 Donation in June for the work that Marilyn Slusher had done with one of the residents. Per Amanda, “we have a resident that is a wonderful man, but he is mentally handicapped and has been a challenge for the staff and some of the residents here too. Marilyn had tirelessly and graciously worked with him to find him the right caregiver, as well as, other services he des-perately needed. This resident has become a different person and now is stable. Although there are still some issues, I would not have believed when he first moved in that he could become the man he is today. The resident’s guardian also feels that way, which is why he wanted to honor Marilyn’s service with this donation.

Amanda wanted to share this story because this truly represents why we do, what we do, every day.

“Sometimes You Win and Sometimes You Learn” at WELSEY WOODS TOWERS

WESLEY WOODS TOWERS Personal Care employees went to The Escape Room in Atlanta Georgia for an enlightening and

educational experience that enabled the team to review and reflect on themselves and their current team dynamics.

The general format of an Escape Room is to crack codes and solve puzzles in order to breakout of a locked chamber within a 60-minute time frame. It is also an opportunity to encourage self-discovery and develop interpersonal relationships. While they were unable to crack the final code, the team did manage to step away from the work place and find personal enrichment.

In the words of the great leader, John Maxwell, “sometimes you win and sometimes you learn,” however, in retrospect, it could be said that everyone won this challenge in many ways.

One of the most beneficial and critical aspects of the experience was the final debriefing – an essential and enlightening discussion about how each member felt and what they discovered.

THE CHAPLAIN CORNER

Rev. Karen Kagiyama, O. Wayne Rollins Director of Pastoral Care

There is a word that has become a movement across the African continent. UBUNTU. It means “I am because we are.” There is no you. There is no me. There is only we. It is a philosophy, an ethic, a way to live together through incredible conflict. Nelson Mandela, the great South African activist for freedom from apartheid,

became a voice for ubuntu. It was only through the unified voice of the black people of South Africa that this repressive system of injustice could be destroyed.

In the collective we find our identity as individuals, and it is through that communal web of relationships that we are formed into the people we are. Ubuntu is both a recognition of how life is and also an invitation to live more selflessly for others. Ubuntu recognizes that everything I do affects you, and everything you do affects me, and together we make a difference. We need each other. We belong to each other. Ubuntu is about being who we are together and using that power for the common good.

At WESLEY WOODS, we work together to serve and love those who are in our care. Ubuntu is a good word for what we do. But it’s not just the residents, it is also our co-workers who are part of ubuntu. Together we are one community of caregivers with a single focus—to serve and love. Admittedly, that is not always an easy task, but hopefully, the idea of ubuntu can help us remember that we are not alone. We do this work together. We do this work with ubuntu.
