Empowering impoverished children and women in SE Asia From Our President Scott Friedman I reflect on another meaningful “Together We Can Change the World” tour. Each one has a different flavor given the people involved and the projects served. After spending a year researching and visiting good causes in and around KL, we created “Bersama Kita Boleh” (Together We Can), an event to raise money and awareness for ten different causes in Malaysia. With the help of Microsoft, Leaderonomics, Food for Good, and the student ambassadors of MSU and UCSI, we divided into 10 groups and celebrated at 10 different locations, providing food and a chance for kids to express their dreams artistically. Our goal moving forward is to set up a council of college students from different universities to run “Bersama Kita Boleh” and to continue bringing awareness and funding to some wonderful projects. (Click here to watch the video.) Our visits proved this to be a much desired project. For instance: At Grace Community Services (http://gracecommunityservices.my/), Director Irene Dawson mentioned how inspiring it was to see parents giving their kids encouragement as they sketched their dreams. At Pandawas Academy (https://www.facebook.com/pandawasacademy), a young female Afghan refugee expressed her gratitude for living in Malaysia after narrowly escaping the Taliban. A university student commented that it was his very first time volunteering and that it felt good to be involved in making a difference. He wanted to continue to help the projects… and so do we.

Empowering impoverished children and women in SE Asia

From Our PresidentScott Friedman

I reflect on another meaningful “Together We CanChange the World” tour.  Each one has a differentflavor given the people involved and the projectsserved.  After spending a year researching and visitinggood causes in and around KL, we created “BersamaKita Boleh” (Together We Can), an event to raisemoney and awareness for ten different causes inMalaysia. With the help of Microsoft, Leaderonomics,Food for Good, and the student ambassadors of MSUand UCSI, we divided into 10 groups and celebrated at10 different locations, providing food and a chance forkids to express their dreams artistically.

Our goal moving forward is to set up a council of college students from differentuniversities to run “Bersama Kita Boleh” and to continue bringing awareness and fundingto some wonderful projects. (Click here to watch the video.)  Our visits proved this to be amuch desired project.  For instance:

The other stop was the lovely town of Siem Reap, Cambodia, a welcomed calming placeafter the hustle and bustle of the big city. A highlight was the opening of the second roomof the Art Berg Technology Center at the Future for Khmer Children(http://khmerchild.co). The focus of the second room will be social business, teachingstudents specific skills to help them compete in a global marketplace. Read more aboutthis project in Bill’s article below.

We’re excited about our two 2017 tours: Myanmar, January 415 and Siem Reap,Cambodia along with Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai, Thailand May 818.If you’rea speaker or trainer, please consider joining us… the life you change may be your own.

Computer Room 2 Becomes a Reality

Bill Taylor

During our May visit to Future for Khmer Children (FKC) in Siem Reap wecelebrated the opening of Computer Room 2 in the Art Berg Technology Center,previously funded by TWCCTW.

Now, alongside Computer Room 1 where students are learning computer basicsincluding Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, students in Computer Room 2 will have anopportunity to learn sophisticated design skills.  With a generous gift of softwarefrom Autodesk, Inc. and a week of professional training from Jeff Bartles, anemployee with Autodesk, FKC will now teach AutoCAD design to qualified students.

We’re doing this in conjunction with the local campus of Pannasastra University. Two of the six CAD systems we’ve funded will be located at the University, with theother four located in Computer Room 2 at the FKC campus.

The entire Computer Room 2 at FKC has been set up as a social business.  Theinstructor we’ve engaged to lead this effort will not only teach design skills tostudents, but he will also be responsible for offering design services, for a fee, tothe builders and contractors in the local area.

So, not only will the students learn a valuable and employable job skill in ComputerRoom 2, but as the program matures it becomes likely that the income stream fromoutside services provided will become an important source of revenue to supportthe entire Art Berg Technology Center.
