Al Tawazun Environmental Consultancy is a locally-based company providing specialized
environmental services for a wide variety of projects in the UAE and Middle East region such as
environmental impact assessment (EIA), LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design),
green building expertise, environmental audits, social impact assessment (SIA).
In an increasingly globalized world, businesses and their consumers are growing ever more

Al Tawazun Environmental Consultancy offers companies the environmental know-how by

Established in early 2010 in order to cater to the need for specialized environmental
Consultant services within a slowing economy and increasingly degraded environment, Al
Tawazun provides a wide variety of environmental and green building consultant services.
Al Tawazun Environmental Consultancy is founded and owned by Asil Hassan Rashid. With a
B.A in Geography (The Human Environment), Minor in Anthropology and a graduate diploma
in Environmental Impact Assessment from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, Asil is an
environmental consultant and LEED AP with experience in conducting environmental,
sustainability and social assessments and surveys for waterfront developments, resorts,
mixed-use developments, industrial facilities, as well as environmental management systems
(ISO 14001) and environmental audits specifically in HSE-related fields in the oil and gas
Industry.
Some of the credentials and qualifications held by Al Tawazun are:
LEED AP (Building, Design & Construction) and LEED for Existing
Buildings: Operations and Maintenance , 2009.
Member of Emerging Green Builders (EGB) of Canada Green
Building Council (CaGBC), Quebec chapter.

Customs and RTA, as well as major consultancies and suppliers in

Armed with specific knowledge of UAE environmental laws and regulations and particular
experience in offshore developments, Al Tawazun is perfectly poised to deliver a wide spectrum of
consultant services. These services include:
A.Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
Being Al Tawazun’s main area of expertise, our team is fully qualified to
undertake all aspects of an EIA study for a diversity of project types, from
artificial island developments, mixed-use and waterfront developments to
industrial facilities. Our work includes the preparation of baseline studies,
the actual impact assessment of various environmental, social and
economic aspects - positive and negative - weighted on a significance
scale, and the preparation of realistic and economically feasible mitigation
measures and the implementation of monitoring procedures. We also act
as coordinators, liaising between the client and the relevant authority to
ensure the client obtains the approval for their respective projects.
B. Environmental Baseline Surveys
The baseline study forms the core of the entire EIA report. It is the
platform on which the EIA study is based and can then move forward.
Through its extensive network of experts, Al Tawazun can offer to
undertake a variety of environmental surveys such as air quality (air
quality dispersion modelling), sediment and water quality (sampling,
comparison of results of laboratory analysis with local and international
regulations), noise and traffic assessments etc.
C. Environmental Management Plan
Based on the findings of the EIA report (and the assessment of the
cumulative and residual impacts and mitigation measures), Al Tawazun
can develop a comprehensive environmental management plan (EMP)
broken down into a Construction Environmental Management Plan
(CEMP) and Operation Environmental Management Plan (OEMP). By
doing this, contractor’s requirements (for CEMP) and facility management
requirements (OEMP) are integrated and streamlined with the long-term
monitoring procedures to ensure proper execution of mitigation measures
and assess performance against the plan for the duration of the project.
E. LEED and Sustainability Assessments/ Green
Building ConsultancyAl Tawazun provides green building consultancy services such as sustainability
design reviews and LEED assessment services (specifically for LEED Building,
Design and Construction and LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations &
Maintenance 2009) through its qualified LEED APs. These services include:
assisting the client in achieving the relevant certification by pursuing the required
number of credits; energy modelling; feasibility studies of CAPEX and
OPEX on the different credits available; researching potential
suppliers of innovative green technologies in the region; conducting
workshops to update and advise the client on the LEED process and
the best credits to pursue; liaising with the US Green Building Council (USGBC)
and uploading documentation on the USGBC LEED Online template.
D. Social Impact AssessmentBased on the concept that people and the economy are closely interlinked with the environment, especially
in areas where local people derive their livelihoods directly from the natural world, public participation,
which forms of the core of SIAs, are an integral part of EIAs and the overall decision-making process. Al
Tawazun, through its network of multilingual experts is able to undertake stakeholder consultations
(through various techniques such as open-ended questionnaires, workshops and interviews) with the
affected parties and ensure that the impacts of development on their culture and livelihoods are mitigated
or minimized.
G. Corporate Social ResponsibilityCSR is a widening field in which corporate ethics are improved and their obligations towards the society and
environment they operate in are focused on by implementing the triple bottom line approach (people, planet
and profit).Al Tawazun can develop CSR initiatives for companies and provide recommendations to achieve
their full potential in terms of sustainability.
H. Oil and Gas HSE-related services
Al Tawazun can assist in conducting internal audits and implementation of EMS
(Environmental Management Systems), preparing emergency scenario reports,
and assisting in road safety procedures.
F. Coastal Zone ManagementThe practice of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) utilizes a holistic,
sustainability-oriented dynamic approach to the management and protection of
coastal areas and fisheries within the context of development, that considers all
aspects of the coastal zone such as the biophysical, socio-economic and
political boundaries. Al Tawazun can undertake feasibility studies, mapping of
natural resource areas (coral reefs, fisheries etc) through GIS technology,
develop a co-management framework for coastal areas that includes beach
restoration /rehabilitation, sustainable tourism and empowerment of local
fisheries.

A.Asil RashidOwner and CEO of Al Tawazun Environmental Consultancy, Asil has obtained BA in Geography Specialization:
The Human Environment, Minor in Anthropology) in 2001 and a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Impact
Assessment in 2006 from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. As an environmental consultant and LEED
AP (Building Design + Construction and Existing Buildings: Operation & Maintenance) she has acquired valuable
experience in conducting environmental, sustainability and social assessments, as well as environmental
management systems (ISO 14001) and environmental audits specifically in HSE-related fields in the oil and gas
industry. During her career, Asil has worked closely with major developers and government organizations in
Dubai such as Nakheel, Sama Dubai, Dubai Customs and RTA, as well as the two main regulating
authorities Dubai World-Environment, Health and Safety Section (EHSS) and Dubai Municipality. Having
acquired her environmental education from Canada, Asil also has a sound understanding of Canadian
environmental laws and regulations. Asil is a native Arabic speaker, fluent in English with a working knowledge of
French.
B. Susan KomuhangiSusan has extensive experience in environmental consultancy, impact assessment, waste
management, report writing, research and is very knowledgeable in different environmental aspects.
She has gained valuable international experience in the UK, Uganda and the UAE. She has earned a
Bachelor’s of Environmental Management (2004) from Makerere University in Uganda and a MSc in
Environmental Consultancy (2007) from University of West England.
C. Ahmed MosaAhmed is an architect and LEED AP BD+C with several years of experience in the UAE and Cairo. He has
a Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering from Cairo University (2004) and is currently working on his
masters degree in "Sustainable design of the built Environment” from the British University in Dubai while
pursuing his career as an architect and consulting engineer. He has worked on projects for a number of
consultancy offices such as ARUP, Buro Happold, Arrowstreet, HDR, ZNA, Callision, CRJA, and Hyder.
Ahmed also has experience in LEED energy modeling and has developed a keen interest in the process
and practice of environmental assessments and ecology.
EIA for existing industrial facility at Dubai Investment Park, Dubai, U.A.E
Al Tawazun was recently contracted to conduct an environmental impact assessment study for the new branch of an existing aluminum and glass assembling factory and a powder coating plant located at Dubai Investment Park, Dubai, U.A.E. The main proponent is Multiforms Architectural Facades Specialists. The study included a brief visual survey, a stakeholder consultation with the main proponents, the preparation of an environmental impact statement and an environment safety and health (EHS) plan.
EIA for construction and operation of a laundry and dry cleaning facility at Al QusaisIndustrial Area, Dubai, U.A.E
Al Tawazun was commissioned to carry out an environmental impact assessment study for the construction and operation of a laundry and dry cleaning service for Radiant Dry Cleaners and Steam Laundry Services. The study and subsequent report included the assessment of impacts on water quality, air quality, waste management, recommendation of mitigation measures, an environment, safety and health (EHS) plan and an environmental management plan. The activities also included liaising with the regulatory authorities to obtain the environmental permit for the new facility.
LEED assessment (Commercial Interiors) for SGS office build-out, Sausalito,
California, U.S.A
Al Tawazun was recently involved in a LEED assessment for LEED Commercial Interiors for an office build-out. The main proponent was SGS and GreenStep Education was the main consultant. The project included assisting the client in pursuing credits for certification in the various categories of LEED for Commercial Interiors, 2009 such as Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy Efficiency and Materials & Resources. Al Tawazun was also involved in uploading the various documentation and project details on the LEED Online template on the USGBC website.
EIA for the construction and operation of Dubai Refreshment Company Green Field Factory, Dubai Investment Park, Dubai, U.A.EAl Tawazun was commissioned by the design consultants, Royal Haskoning, to carry out an environmental impact assessment study for the construction and operation of a beverage factory located in Dubai Investment Park, for the client, Dubai Refreshment Company. The study and subsequent report included the assessment of impacts on soil and groundwater quality, air quality, traffic, noise, waste management, recommendation of mitigation measures, a construction environmental management plan (CEMP) and an operational environmental management plan (OEMP). The scope of work also included developing contractor’s requirements for construction, submission of the EIA report, liaising with the regulatory authorities, Dubai Municipality and obtaining the required Environmental Permit for the new facility.
While we realize that Al Tawazun Environmental Consultancy is
still very young, we are optimistic about its bright future as a
key player in the environmental consultancy field in the Middle
East region. We aim to maintain our client-oriented approach
while at the same time forging strategic partnerships with other
companies in order to provide a wider variety of services to our
clients. Furthermore, we aim to expand our core team with
varied skills in waste management, marine resources
management, carbon emissions, renewable energy resources,
among others, while maintaining our flexible structure of sub
contracting freelance professionals in order to maintain our
competitive edge in today’s challenging market.
