Question 4Who would be the audience for your media product?

BBFC The BBFC is the British Board of Film Classification

The BBFC was founded by the film industry and is

responsible for film classification and censorship of

films within the United Kingdom

It classifies films in the cinema and for home release for

different age categories: 12/12A, 15, and 18.

12/12A When a film is given a 12 rating, no person under the

age of 12 is permitted to watch it

12A is a rating that is only seen for films when they are

being shown at a cinema. It allows for children under

12 to watch a film in the cinema as long as they are

accompanied by an adult.

What is a 12/12A film allowed

to show? No dark or unsettling tones

Little strong language or not used at all, if strong

language is used it also depends on the manner in

which it’s used for whether the film passes as a 12 or

not

No aggressive discriminative language

Sexual behaviour only used discreetly and briefly

Only moderate violence allowed

15 A 15 rated film means that no person under the age of

15 is permitted to watch it

This means no one under the age of 15 is permitted to

watch the film at the cinema or buy-rent a 15 rated film.

What is a 15 rated film

allowed to show?A 15 rated film can show any of the following:

Strong language (even frequent strong language)

Portrayals of sexual activity

Strong verbal references to sex

Sexual nudity

brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence

Discriminatory language or behaviour

Drug taking

18 An 18 rated film means no one under the age of 18 is

permitted to watch it, and so are strictly for adults

This means no person under the of 18 is permitted to

watch an 18 rated film at the cinema or buy/rent a 15

rated film.

What is an 18 rated film

allowed to show?18 works are for adults and can contain strong issues such as:

Very strong violence

Frequent strong language

Strong portrayals of sexual activity

Scenes of sexual violence

Strong horror, blood and gore

Real sex (in some circumstances)

Discriminatory language and behaviour

Thriller classification

Research I looked on the BBFC website at Thriller films and their

classifications

Shutter Island Shutter Island is rated a 15.

This is because, it contains strong

language, bloody injury and

disturbing images

It doesn’t, however, contain any

material unsuitable for a 15 aged

audience

Psycho The film Psycho is rated 15

This is because, according to

the BBFC website, it contains

strong violence.

Seven The film Seven has been given

an 18 rating

This is because it contains

strong bloody violence, horror

and threat.

The Purge The Purge has been rated a 15

This is because it contains strong

language and bloody violence

Salvo Salvo has been rated a 12 by

the BBFC

This is because it contains

strong language, moderate

violence and threat.

Crime Thriller Classification

Research I have also researched into the crime thriller genre, and

at the classification of films in this genre.

Nightcrawler Nightcrawler is a crime thriller

film that has been rated a 15 by

the BBFC.

This is because it contains

strong bloody crime scene detail

and strong language.

The Equalizer The Equalizer has also been

rated a 15 by the BBFC.

This is because it contains

strong bloody violence, sex

references, and strong

language.

Sin City Sin City has been rated an 18

by the BBFC.

This is because it contains

strong bloody violence.

The November Man The November Man has been

rated a 15 by the BBFC.

This is because it contains

strong language, violence,

sexual violence, sex and drug

use.

Our FilmWe have decided our film would be classified as a 15

This is because of the content that is shown in the film:

There is drug use, which is hinted at in the opening sequence via the argument about money

There is violence between the male character and the female protagonist

There will also be use of strong language in the rest of the film

Our Film We have also decided this because whilst researching

other thriller films and crime thriller films, most of these

were rated 15.

We have also asked for feedback from other members

of our class (who have watched our opening sequence)

who have agreed that a 15 rating is a suitable rating for

our film.

How have we targeted our

audience? We have targeted our intended audience (15-25) by

conducting an audience questionnaire when creating the idea of our product.

This helped us to shape our product to suit our target audience when planning it, and aided us in the decision making involved in creating our idea for the film.

It allowed us to see which props, characters and locations to use (among other things) that our intended audience would prefer to see in a thriller film.
