The Ljubljana Festival, with its long history and tradition of presenting high-quality artistic events, contributes significantly to the cultural life of Ljubljana in the summer. This year’s 67th Ljubljana Festival edition opened with Verdi’s opera Aida and included an appearance by thoroughbred Lipizzaner horses from the stud farm in Lipica. The closing event of the Ljubljana Festival will be the concert by one of the finest orchestras in the world, the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra. This gala concert is particularly significant in that it is a part of the farewell tour of one of the greatest conductors of the modern age, Zubin Mehta, who is retiring after directing the orchestra for 50 years.www.ljubljanafestival.si

An important addition was the hydroelectric power plant which was built in 1897 to serve the Vevče paper mill. Still operative today, the power plant is a unique example of technical history. Smokeasac, a musician and the producer of the tragically gone Lil Peep, will at an exclusive show, play not just his own songs, but a selection of songs of Lil Peep’s posthumous album Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 2 as well. The joint path of Smokeasac and Lil Peep began in their early teens. They lost touch for several years after that, until running into each other in Los Angeles, where they each moved to pursue their dreams of making it in the music business. They started collaborating and developed a close friendship. Smokeasac’s revolutionary production blend of rock and rap helped Lil Peep achieve global stardom and became one of the most prominent voices in contemporary emo rap, with several hundred million plays on Spotify and YouTube alone.

The energetic live performances by Canadian-Swiss artist Camilla Sparksss and the Belgian-French duo OD Bongo will take place as part of the celebration of 10th anniversary of Kino Šiška and in cooperation with Indigo Festival and Sonica Festival. With her striking performance, hypnotic synths and daring punk-inspired lyrics, Camilla enthralled the audience of this year’s MENT Ljubljana Festival. Camilla reigns with her hypnotic synths, icy beats and daring lyrics, delivered in a punk manner and veiled with a lo-fi electropop noise experience. After three EPs and a debut album For You the Wild with the single Quasi Cool, she released the album Brutal in April this year, which led the Mexican Sicario to proclaim her as the new princess of dark electronics.

The concert is marked by a celebration of the 80th birthday of prominent Slovenian composer Alojz Ajdič. His composition Prebujenje (Awakening), premiered in 2017, rhythmic and colourful work, is an ode to life, marked by an awareness of life’s transience in contrast to the eternal nature of music. The popular Romantic Piano Concerto No. 2 by Frédéric Chopin will come to life in an interpretation by 25 year-old Alexander Gadjiev who is enjoying increasing international recognition, especially after winning the 2015 edition of the triennial Hamamatsu Competition in Japan, with Martha Argerich in the jury. The concert will conclude with Symphony No. 2 by the great pianist and composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, a work that secured the composer a place among the great symphonists. The work’s magnificent palette of orchestral colours will be shaped by renowned Polish conductor Antoni Wit.

Indigo Festival, Nobody Cares? 11-13 SepVarious venuesThe fourth edition of Indigo Festival will explore topics of indifference and insensitivity towards problems that surround us, fuelled by constant media battle for attention and everyday indignation over pressing issues. Robbed of power and solid ground beneath our feet, we are too tired to care for anything or anyone. All we want is peace and quiet. We withdraw to detachment, vegging out in privacy, until someone knocks on our door. Personal integrity and the possibility of solidarity have been taken away from us, while, squinting over our bedsheets, we gloomily observe world events or simply lock our hearts away to guard them from the evil. Should we care? www.indigo.ooo
