Director’s MessageWe are excited to share with you some additions coming to

Hillsboro Parks & Recreation!

Right now construction of a new splash pad and playground is underway at Walnut Street Park. The splash pad will be located next to the existing gazebo and will be a wonderful addition to this neighborhood park. The project will be completed in the fall.

The Rock Creek Trail is getting a bit of attention with two construction projects. The trail is currently being extended from Orchard Park south to NW Wilkins Street, a distance of about two-thirds of a mile. We are also partnering with ODOT and Washington County to install a fully signalized crosswalk on Evergreen Parkway at the trail to provide a safer, more convenient bicycle and pedestrian crossing for trail users.

The Orenco Woods Nature Park site is shaping up nicely. In partnership with Metro and the Trust for Public Land, a 42 acre parcel was purchased in December 2011 and added to an adjacent property already owned by the City. With the land acquired, we are about to undergo the master planning process for the new park, which will include opportunities for public input.

We want to keep you informed and involved. Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, join our eNewsletter list, visit our website, or give us a call. All of these are great ways for you to learn more about our park projects and how we’re constantly working to make Hillsboro a better place to live, work and play.

Let’s Play Ball – Baseball is Coming to Hillsboro! On June 26, Hillsboro City Council approved an agreement with Short Season, LLC, the owners

of the Yakima Bears, to bring short-season Single A baseball to Hillsboro by June 2013. Since that momentous occasion a lot of work has been done to prepare for the team’s arrival.

Hoffman Construction/SRG Partners were hired as the design build team for a new 4,500 capacity baseball stadium at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex on NW 229th Avenue. The stadium is expected to draw a total of between 100,000 and 180,000 fans each season, but the stadium is also being designed for year-round community use. The ball park will feature artificial turf that is marked for lacrosse, soccer and football, in addition to baseball. It is expected that

the facility will be used by the school district, expanded adult soccer leagues, new league sports, athletic tournaments and special events.

Construction will begin in the early fall and will be completed in time for the Hillsboro’s future hometown team to throw out the first pitch next June. Construction updates will be posted regularly at www.ci.hillsboro.or.us/parksrec and at www.facebook.com/Hillsboroparks. See you at the ball park!

Full Nelson: A Family Affair with Art December 4 – January 29 Dell Nelson, Larry Nelson, Debra Nelson, Loren Nelson and Christopher NelsonIt’s a family affair this holiday season with three generations of Nelsons in the gallery Larry Nelson exhibited in Questioning Functionality 2 and 3 with his fantastic trompe l’oeil ceramics that look like miniature metal boilers and piping In reality his work is all functional ceramic tea pots and cups Upon learning that many members of Larry’s family are accomplished artists, we simply had to have them all on display Larry’s father, Dell, draws immaculate renderings of crumbling buildings in charcoal Debra Nelson is a ceramicist who creates lamps inspired by organic forms Brother Loren Nelson is a photographer whocapturesdetailsoffloraoftenoverlooked The youngest member of this family exhibition is Christopher Nelson whose whimsical works include a little social criticism The Nelsons are featured throughout the building

First Tuesday Opening Reception December 4 6:00 – 8:00 pm An opening reception in the lobby and house concert featuring Jackie Hicks on hammer dulcimer will include refreshments from Claey’s Catering

Jeff Jurrens, Kim Lakin, Bradley McLemoreAugust 7 – September 25Main GalleryJeff Jurrens and Kim Lakin explore abstraction in their work Jurrens’ abstract expressionist paintings are large, colorful and rich, with a depth of texture formed by his liberal use of squeegee-applied paint His new work incorporates geometric shapes—which are, coincidentally, similar to forms foundinKimLakin’sfiberart.ThoughLakin assembles her work using quilting techniques, the end results bear more in common with minimalist painting than with your grandmother’s quilts Sculptor Bradley McLemore creates functional ceramic objects and sculptural forms abstracted from mechanical devices These sculptures hint at, yet never fully explain, their possible utility

Tom Jacquemin, Sandra Pearce In the lower exhibition space Photographer Tom Jacquemin and watercolor painter Sandra Pearce both focus on landscapes as a vehicle to celebrate light and color

First Tuesday Opening ReceptionSeptember 4 6:00 – 8:00 pm An opening reception in the lobby honoring all September artists featuring a house concert with Rio Con Brio will include refreshments from Claeys Catering
