FALL 2016 S7MRC ORIENTATION/TRAINING

Our Fall S7MRC Orientation/Training was held on Saturday October 29, 2016 in Vi-

enna, IL at the Vienna Head Start Center. We may have been small in numbers that

day, but not in the wealth of information that was presented. There is so much materi-

al that has to be covered at the Orientation/Training in order to meet the requirements

for joining the S7MRC. I am very pleased to welcome our two newest S7MRC mem-

bers, Joanne Wong-Hammonds from Massac County and Emily Ramsey from Union

teer of the American Red Cross. Also, I was very fortunate to have S7MRC member

Eva Schuler spend the day with us and keep all the paperwork straight and in order. I

appreciate each and every one of you for your part in making the Orientation/Training

a success!

2016 “WEATHERING THE STORM” CONFERENCE

Tracy Walker, Judy Sullivan-Murry and I attended the 6th Annual “Weathering the

Storm” Regional Disaster Conference which was sponsored by SPARC (Shawnee Pre-

paredness and Response Coalition) on Wednesday October 12th in Marion, IL at “The

Pavilion”, where beneficial information was presented.

The opening address was “Anti-Terrorism Basics for Emergency Management and

Hospital Professionals” which was presented by Kevin Holt.

The Keynote Address was “Earthquake Mitigation, Where Do I Start?” Mike Fleming

talked about some of the dangers that may be lurking in our homes if an earthquake

were to occur and what can be done to begin preparing and help others to prepare as

well.

Breakout sessions included subjects such as Packing Your “Digital Go Bag; Bomb

Threat Response: What to do and Why; Statewide Terrorism & Intelligence Center:

The Importance of Information; Amtrak Passenger Train Emergency Response;

Weathering the Media Storm; and Integrating Pediatric Considerations into Hospital

Disaster Plans to name a few.

Student

Emily Ramsey, Jonesboro, IL—

SCC Nursing Student

These two ladies will be assets to the

S7MRC Unit, and we look forward to

working with them!

On Saturday October 22 the Shriner’s held a screening clinic at

the Southern Seven Health Department Clinic in Anna, Illinois.

Kay Walker, Judy Sullivan-Murray and myself were there to as-

sist with checking patients in

and directing them and their

parents/guardians through

the screening process.

This was a significant way for

the S7MRC Unit to step up

and help the local health de-

partment serve a vulnerable

population.

2ND ANNUAL TOUR DE SEVEN 5K A SUCCESS

S7MRC ASSIST SHRINERS

Southern Seven Health Department/Head Start’s 2nd Annual Tour de Seven 5k

Run/Walk and 1 Mile Turkey Trot at the Clyde L. Choate Mental Health and

Developmental Center in Anna, Illinois on Saturday Morning November 5th was

a success with close to 50 people in attendance. The weather was a little chilly

starting out but warmed up nicely. The 5k route was filled with beautiful fall

colors and everyone seemed to enjoy the scenic route this year.

The event ran smoothly without any major incident or injury and all the com-

ments received were very positive. Participants were very pleased with the First

Aid/Hydration Stations and very excited about all the door prizes this year, a

practice we plan to continue.

A big “THANK YOU”” to the four S7MRC members for taking time out of their

Saturday morning and lending a helping hand to man the First Aid/Hydration

Stations. Your time and efforts are truly appreciated: Judy Sullivan-Murray

from Goreville; Sara Manus from Jonesboro; Wendy Boren from Tamms (and

her two daughters); and Tracy Prosser from Cobden.

PERSONAL PREPAREDNESS PRESENTATIONS

September and October were busy months for the S7MRC with all the

Personal Preparedness presentations scheduled at all the Southern Sev-

en Head Start Parent Group Meetings and Homebased Head Start So-

cializations.

We were also invited to help with a Preparedness Workshop at the Su

Casa Migrant Head Start. The families present were encouraged to take

action and prepare now and throughout the year for emergencies. Em-

phasis was on building an Emergency Kit with many items being given

to each of them to do just that. Preparedness material was handed out

and there was good discussion between presenters and those present

from the migrant community. Building a Family Communication Plan

was also explained and discussed.

Thank you to the following S7MRC members for helping at these

presentations: Kay Walker from Elizabethtown; Clarissa Johnson from

Brookport; Rhonda Pearson from Cobden; Dona Middleton from

Jonesboro; and Sara Pitcher-Guijon from Anna. Your help was truly

appreciated!

Preparedness is important to everyone, everywhere. We want to get

preparedness information out in our communities. If there is a group

that you know would be interested in having a preparedness presenta-

tion, let me know so that we can see about scheduling them.

You volunteer your time and

put others ahead of you

You never expect recogni-

tion for all that you do

Please know that you are

appreciated, valued, and

loved every day

You are so special and love-

ly; have a very happy birth-

day!
