Two measurement campaigns, each including:- Hydrography (multibeam surveys)- Hydrology (ADCP hydrodynamic profiling)- Sampling of suspension and riverbed sediments
12 navigation bottlenecks, grouped together in five critical zones
Estimation of workload/campaign:- Hydrography: 224 km2 + 600 km of transverse profiles- Hydrology: 550 profiles with 1100 transects- Sediments: approx. 1500 riverbed and 7200 suspended samples

Hydrodynamic Mathematical ModellingModel software packages
1D modelling: Flood Modeller Pro software package free surface flow Saint-Venant equations modules: incl. sediment transport
2D modelling: MIKE 21 Flow FM software free surface flow integrated Navier-Stokes equations, using a flexible grid modules: hydrodynamic module, cohesive/non-cohesive sediment transport, morphology
Navigation simulation modelling: SHIPMA (v7) software developed by MARIN and Deltares fast-time simulator uses autopilot algorithm to simulate control of the vessel

Sustainable navigation conditions must be achieved while protecting:
Field works trips Migratory Fish Habitat Assessment
16
Field trip 1 The first field work trip was undertaken between October –November 2017. This trip covered all CPs other than CP 3 and CP 4which could not be surveyed due to adverse weather conditions.This field work focused on identifying potential habitats along theRomanian river bank based and made us of the bathymetry dataanalysed during the office work to focus the survey effort.
Field trip 2The second fieldwork trip was undertaken in July 2018.This trip focused on the Bulgarian river bank at CP 5, CP 6 and CP 7and These CPs were selected as they had been identified by theproject engineers as the most likely sites to require physicalintervention beyond dredging.

Preparatory actions for EIA
20
Initiated the Gap Analysis for: Biodiversity WDF
Initiated the Multi-Criteria Analysis of main options: Includes the Initial Technical Options versus Significant Environmental
Impacts (i.e. priority species and habitats) Developed environmental criteria and sub-criteria (including evaluation
parameters) based on: Results of meetings with Stakeholders Previous comments/concern – JASPERS and authorities on former EIA/AA Risk workshop Case studies Guidelines and other literature – ICPDR publications
Options / Appraisal ProcessNavigation conditions Initial technical studies identified the existing navigation
fairway constraints based on 1D modelling of low flow scenarios.
Basic navigation fairway requirements: 2.5m minimum depth 180m channel width (150m if min. depth cannot be ensured) 1,000m bend radius 93% exceedance flow (at least 340 days per year)
21
General approach
For each critical location, four options scenarios areconsidered for initial model simulations: Baseline option with no interventions (“zero” option); Dredging only of the current fairway; Optimized Alternative (“OA”) preferred option
recommended in the original 2011 feasibility study (ifapplicable);
Two alternative new options for river training works thatcombine traditional engineering solutions, such as dikesand chevrons and more nature-based morphologicalsolutions, such as the creation of artificial islands;
