ILOILO City…The City of Love

The name “Iloilo” was derived from “irong-irong”,

a reference to the native word “irong” which means “nose”.

The name took after the nose-like configuration of the main settlement area during the pre-Spanish period as so shaped by the Iloilo River. Chinese traders who frequent the area and who mispronounce the “r” sounds with “l” sounds, soon popularized the term “ilong-ilong” which later evolved into the current name Iloilo.

Iloilo is home for prestigious festivals such as Dinagyang Festival and Paraw Regatta. It is also the origin of the delectable La Paz Batchoy, mouthwatering seafoods, and other local cuisine. Moreover, Iloilo reflects Spanish and American architecture in its historical sites and landmarks as evidenced by the heritage mansions, churches, universities, and government buildings while remaining true to its genuine Ilonggo culture.

Iloilo City has its own linear park along its riverbanks – the Iloilo River Esplanade. It serves as recreation area, a great place for leisurely stroll or to enjoy the sunset and the rest of the evening.

Located at the heart-shaped island of Panay, the “Heart” of the Philippines, with the captivating gentleness of its people…

Welcome to Iloilo City, the City of Love.

Transportation Advisory in Iloilo City

7

Upon arrival at Iloilo International Airport in Cabatuan, Iloilo: There are three (3) options getting to Iloilo City (note: Iloilo airport is 28 kilometers from Iloilo City):

Option 1: Taxi services (preferably Light of Glory or Merriam, as they are the biggest taxi companies in Iloilo). This cost PHP300-400, a bit expensive but it will bring you directly to your destination. travel time is about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic. Option 2: Airport van-for-hire (Merriam or Susie Star). Upon exiting the airport’s arrival area, you will see parked white vans (with bulldog stickers) just across the street. Tell the driver/conductor to drop you at SM City Iloilo. The ride costs 50 pesos and travel time may take 30 minutes to an hour depending on traffic conditions. Note that they cram 14 people into the van; not the most comfortable. The shuttles have their signages up when you go out of the arrival area, you won't miss them. Upon arrival at SM City Iloilo public transport terminal, you can take a taxi to your hotel (fare is no more than 100 pesos for hotels listed see page 23).

Option 3: Multicab. This option is the cheapest BUT will take the longest travel time. Upon exiting the airport’s arrival area, turn right and take a short walk (50 meters) towards the end departure area. You will see white multicabs plying the airport-Santa Barbara route. The ride costs 15 pesos and will take you to their terminal across Total Gas Station in Santa Barbara town. After the multicab ride, take a jeepney (Santa Barbara) going to SM City Iloilo. Jeepney fare from Santa Barbara to SM City Iloilo is 15 pesos. Upon arriving at SM City public transport terminal, you can take a taxi or another jeepney ride as stated in option 2. Travel time for this option may range from an hour to an hour and a half depending again on traffic conditions. Friendly tips: 1.Before exiting the airport, you can ask the guards on duty to direct you to the taxi, van, or multicab terminals. Ilonggos are very loving and gentle people, and are always willing to help.

2.SM City Iloilo is your point of reference when traveling from and to the airport. Airport vans have their own terminal at the SM carpark, so you’ll never miss them. Fare from Iloilo Airport to SM City Iloilo is 50 pesos, while SM City Iloilo to Iloilo Airport is 70 pesos.

3.Above all, enjoy commuting. Iloilo is quite a small city so arguably, you’ll never get lost.
