Dear Friends,Ashoka established its Arab World Regional Office in 2003 to promote innovative solutions to address significant, complex challenges in society. The program was called the Arab Region Initiative for Social Entrepreneurship, or ARISE, because it would be a social entrepreneurship effort conducted by Arabs for Arabs.

Egypt was selected as a strategic location for the new full-time Ashoka Arab World regional office because of its large population and geographic and political centrality. Since the establishment of the Arab World Regional Office, 41 Fellows from Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Jordan and Saudi Arabia have been elected, and form a part of the Global Ashoka Fellowship that includes 2,600 leading social entrepreneurs from over 70 countries around the world.

Five years after its inception, Ashoka Arab World is actively engaging the leading social entrepreneurs of the region in all major fields of social concern: education, health, women’s empowerment, human rights, peace and conflict resolution, democracy, environment, economic development, agriculture, water, disability and children’s rights.

The activities of Ashoka in the Arab region go beyond seeking and investing in entrepreneurs. We are also creating and sustaining a channel of communication between the business community and civil society, as well as improving the way CSOs work in the Arab region in regards to sustainability, output and ethical responsibility.

The success of the Ashoka Arab World program proves that grassroots positive social change in the Middle East is a very real possibility when social entrepreneurship initiatives are used as a vehicle for development. Ashoka’s methodology presents a particularly relevant strategy in the Arab region, where difficult bureaucracies and deeply-rooted tradition often make addressing complex issues all the more daunting.

Ashoka’s mission is to create a competitive, entrepreneurial and globally-integrated citizen sector and to develop the profession of social entrepreneurship. In this report we will show you how far and in what ways Ashoka Arab World has contributed to realizing this mission.

Best regards,

Iman BibarsVice President, Ashoka GlobalRegional Director, Ashoka Arab World
