A new creative partnership betweenMulticultural Arts Victoria, City of GreaterDandenong & the Arts Centre

The Arts play an important role inconnecting communities andbringing people together.

The Arts provide us with a universal languagethat enables us to understand and empathisewith each other in a time when there is muchconflict and divide between cultures andpeople. Multicultural Arts Victoria has beenworking inclusively to achieve greaterparticipation and awareness of the arts andsocial inclusion.

MAV is celebrating a new formal and creativepartnership with the City of Greater Dandenongand the Arts Centre Melbourne. A Memorandumof Understanding between the threeorganisations was signed on October 6th at TheDrum Theatre, Dandenong. This partnership willfoster a strong collaborative approach tocommunity engagement and increaseparticipation of artists and communities ofculturally and linguistically diverse backgroundsin the arts in Victoria.

The new three way agreement will furtherbroaden our reach into Melbourne’s culturallydiverse South Eastern Metropolitan Region andbuild on the success of the Emerge CulturalHubs a program unearthing a wave of newcultures and talents who have made Victoriatheir home in recent years. This once againdemonstrates MAV’s positive advocacy toensure increased participation of our CALDartists and communities in the cultural life ofthe community. The partnership will also allowall three partners to recognise the strengths andopportunities that City of Greater Dandenong’srich blend of emerging cultures presents.

MAV has already achieved significant successwith its partnerships and programming fortargeted cultural communities through itscollaborations especially with the Arts Centreand the creation of the award-winning MIX ITUP! program reflecting cultural diversity at alocal, national and international level.

Recently MAV presented at the 6th DiversityMatters conference held at LASALLE College ofthe Arts, Singapore in September- aCommonwealth forum on cultural diversity:

Social Cohesion and the Arts, on ourpartnership with the Arts Centre “A model fordeveloping arts and social cohesion thoughcommunity partnerships - Multicultural ArtsVictoria and the Arts Centre.”

While arts initiatives often have a positivetransformative effect on social cohesion, thiseffect depends very much on how they aredesigned and implemented. Social inclusion isnot a passive concept and must activelyencompass new ways of thinking which arebased on the ethos and recognition of basichuman rights for all. Multicultural Arts Victoriaand the Arts Centre have developed andevolved this collaborative partnership over thepast five years. MIX IT UP is a way ofrecognising that diversity in artisticprogramming is a way of reaching out to newartists and communities as well as developingaudiences and new arts products andcontributing to social cohesion in thecommunity.

The program has been a model in the arts thathas stimulated and inspired other partnershipsand initiatives in the community like the recentDandenong partnership.

Central to MAV partnerships is a shared vision,including:

• A commitment to artistic excellence;

• A commitment to reflecting Victoria’s culturaldiversity through creating unique programswhich include artists and communities fromCALD backgrounds for increasingly broadand diverse audiences;

• A commitment to community engagementand cultural dialogue;

• A commitment to developing increasedpathways for CALD artists;

• A commitment to the creative developmentof new work by Victorian artists; and

• A commitment to social inclusion through thearts.

Other significant partnerships which areblossoming through our program include theABC Radio National and the Melbourne RecitalCentre music series, Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery

exhibitions, AMES Refugee Art Prize, acollaboration with Key Change with a trip toSouth Africa to explore Human Rights issueswhich will culminate in Rights at the Roundtable with the City of Melbourne.

All of MAV’s activities are founded on the beliefthat the arts are one of the most powerfulmediums through which to facilitate a moresocially cohesive and harmonious community.Changes in Victoria’s migration patterns arereflected in the artists and communities withwhom MAV has worked with over time. It isimportant for MAV to keep pace with thischange in demographics and to sustain its linkswith established communities while makingnew connections with more recently arrivedartists and communities.

It is apparently clear that throughout thehistory of multicultural arts in Australia therehas always existed a creative tension betweenengaging with grassroots constituency andcultivating ‘excellence and innovation’.Multicultural Arts Victoria has juggled withthese notions but has confidently developed anongoing leadership role and a creative programthat is multilayered in its approach and hasembraced change. Through these partnershipsMAV has demonstrated the importance ofworking strategically to ensure different entrypoints into the arts are created for our artistsand communities.

MAV is soon to publish a thirty five yearoverview of the organisations achievements. Thehistory is authored by Paul Clarkson and editedby Sue Hammond. In the history it is clear thatwhile the language used to express MAV’sobjectives might have changed to reflect thedifferent policies of the time, the key philosophyand MAV values have remained the samethroughout the life span of the organisation.Social inclusion, equity, leadership and artisticexcellence have always been part of MAV’scharter and will remain a strong focus into ourfuture.

devised and produced byChilean/Italian/Hungarian visual artistDominique Rada and was presented as partof the Melbourne Fringe Festival from 23September 2010. This exhibition was adialogue on how language, place, objects,smells, sounds, textures and tastes connectthem to their memories and feelings on asubconscious level revealing additionalthemes of the relationships betweenmemories and identity – how these ‘sense-memories’ help in their connection withsense of place and belonging while living in achanging, contemporary world.

The works included a series of video andsound installations, music, photography and aperformance which drew on a range ofdifferent cultural contexts, each provoking theaudience’s own sensory memories. A key idea linking each work was that theway our senses unlock our cultural memoriesmay be the same regardless of who we areor where we come from. The workspresented, while strongly personal, transcendcultural boundaries. The ‘sensory memory’ is a
