From the Editors

In deciding to study at Fordham, you have welcomed the opportunity to work and live in one of the most fast-paced and diverse cities in the world. As Fr. McShane likely told you during his address, Fordham is your school, but New York is your campus. This is both an opportunity and a challenge: an opportunity to explore all the great things that New York has to offer, and a challenge to avoid intimidation in the face of the often overwhelming nature of such a magnificently dope city.

This Passport Guide to New York City is your resource to navigate some of the best things this city has to offer: shops, restaurants, entertainment, and much more. These pages will provide insight into some of the most exceptional points of interest, ranging from tourist targets to dynamic and distinctive destinations. New York City has something to offer for everyone – be it the world’s most

mous arena, fashion boutiques, Broadway shows, public parks, or the countless number of cuisine options. The hope of Achieving Change Together is that you will use this guide to explore and discover your passion in one of the cultural capitals of the world, and to explore beyond Fordham’s gates.

This guide would not be possible without the gracious and continued assistance of The Office of Substance Abuse Prevention & Student Support.

On behalf of ACT, allow us to extend a warm welcome to the Fordham family. Our home goes beyond our school – get out there and explore it!

Fordham students have previously cited that some of their desirable motives for drinking are: • to bond with friends,• to relieve stress, • to have fun and enjoy themselves,• to meet new people, • to get close to someone, • or because they’re bored.

We decided to rate the Passport locations based on these reasons. Therefore, each location is rated on: • Romance: measures whether the location is a good place for a date or even to

first meet that special someone. • Uniqueness: assesses how “one of a kind” and interesting a place is.• Price: will this location break a college student’s budget? An estimate of the

cost of a meal for one person, an item at a store, or the price of a ticket to a show, tour, etc.

$ = $1-$9 $$ = $10-$19 $$$ = $20-$29 $$$$ = $30+• Relaxation: notes how relaxing an activity is.

• Group-friendly: rates whether a location is ideal for a group of friends.

To improve each year, the Passport needs your help! Email us at [email protected] with suggestions and comments, or

Ram Van schedule: fordham.edu/ramvan Subway

• Make sure you know if the train you’re riding is express or local.• Transferring to a bus from the train, or vice versa, using a MetroCard saves you the fare if you transfer within two hours.

• Don’t ever jump the turnstiles. You’ll get busted.• 42nd St. Subway stations at Port Authority & Times Square are connected underground so you can use any subway to get to either stop.

Bus • If you don’t know where the bus goes, look for a map of the bus route at any of its stops. • All buses have numbers that are preceded by a letter that stands for its major route (B-Brooklyn, Bx-Bronx, Q-Queens, M-Manhattan, S-Staten Island).

• Make sure you have a MetroCard or exact change to get on.

Taxi Cabs • Flag a taxi by waving or holding one arm up.• Cabs are vacant when their light is on (on top of the taxi). If the light is off, there

is someone inside. • The maximum capacity of a cab, not including the driver, is four people.• $45 flat fee plus tolls and tip is usual from JFK to Manhattan.

Metro North

• Quicker than the subway but does not run as frequently• Buy your tickets before you get on the train. Purchase tickets online at mta.info, from the ticket machines at the station, or at a station window. There are always additional fees/penalties for buying your ticket on board from the conductor. Allow yourself time before departure. • A City Ticket allows you to pay $4.25 to travel within New York City on Hudson/Harlem Line trains on Saturdays/Sundays. This ticket is only valid on the day it is purchased and is not available for purchase on board a train.

Long Island Railroad (LIRR) • Located in Penn Station (34th St. & 7th Ave.)• Frequent service, comparable prices to Metro North • Have arranged transportation upon arrival – cabs are not always readily

available at all stations.

Staten Island Ferry • The ferry ride is FREE! Great for sightseeing and relaxing. • If you need to transfer to a train or a bus when you get off the ferry, make sure

you know where you are going before you get there. • Trains 1, N, and R all go to the ferry.

Uber • Whether you're headed to work, the airport, or out on the town, the Uber app

connects you with a reliable ride – from low-cost to premium – in minutes. Payment is automatic through the app and fares are usually cheaper than a taxi.

Safety in the CityNew York City is large and full of many different people, most of whom arefriendly, outgoing, and willing to help others. New Yorkers have worked hard to shed the image of past decades when New York was reputed to be unsafe and unwelcoming. Most are more than willing to share their secrets for living in the Big Apple.

The precautions listed below are not only applicable to living in a big city, but should be applied whenever you travel. Due to heightened security in New York, it is recommended that you carry a photo ID with you at all times.

Safety Tips:• The city is actually quite safe; however, common sense and gut reactions should always be used.• If you are intoxicated, you will not be able to care for yourself.• Try to travel in groups, especially after dark.• Be realistic about your ability to protect yourself.• Know where you are going, how you will get there, and how you will return home before going out.• If confronted by a mugger, a reaction of yelling/screaming may be helpful.• Don’t publicly pull out or display cash, no matter how small or large it is.• Keep your wallet in your front pocket.• Use the Ram Van for trips between Rose Hill and Lincoln Center.• Use Metro North on the East Side of Manhattan, upstate locations and CT.• Use LIRR to travel to Long Island.• Hang your purse over your shoulder and across your chest so that the bag hangs in front of you (not off your shoulder or your back).• Remain in the subway or train car with the conductor (usually the middleor front car).• Wait for the subway or train in the direct vicinity of the clerk.• Avoid isolated train/bus stops.• Don’t wear an iPod in the subway or while walking around.• Wear minimal jewelry when touring the city.• Look for seats or standing room next to the map on the subway so you can read it without appearing to be a tourist.• Don’t bring credit cards you won’t be using.• Keep a list of all cards, licenses, etc. Should they be lost, canceling cards and preparing necessary reports will be more easily accomplished.• Do not give money to pan handlers; if you choose to, use caution. Do not be fooled by sappy tales of strangers about lost money, found money, lost lottery tickets, lost train tickets, etc. These are generally confidence games.• Fordham Public Safety can be reached at (718) 817-2222 (RH) or (212) 636-6075 (LC).• Need the police? Call 911 and give the police operator your exact location, street address, and cross streets. Remain there until uniformed officers arrive.• Public Safety shuttle from D train – for more info, please check online.

CTACHIEVING CHANGE TOGETHER

The Passport Guide to NYC greatly depends on Achieving Change Together. Achieving Change Together (ACT) is an official student organization at Rose Hill whose members are trained and advised by the Office of Substance Abuse Prevention & Student Support. ACT provides accurate information and opportunities for the exploration of personal goals and values that challenge and empower students to make safe and informed choices. By taking this proactive and non-judgmental approach, ACT increases awareness and challenges all students to play a role in transforming the culture of substance use on campus.

ACT plans programs such as the Passport Guide to New York City, the Rose Hill Rush, and other interactive educational events. Its members are leaders and role models at Fordham, and play an active role in advocating informed decision-making.

In order to become a member, students must complete Certified ACT Training held every semester. If you are interested in learning more about ACT, please contact us at [email protected], or follow us on Facebook (Fordham Achieving Change Together), Twitter (@FordhamACT), or Instagram (@fordham_act).
