August was a busy month of events within our town and region, so I’d like to start by congratulating the Gascoyne Food Council and everyone who was involved in hosting this year’s Gascoyne Food Festival. The Shire was a proud sponsor of the event and we look forward to continuing our support in the years to come. Secondly, I’d like to congratulate all the nominees and winners of the Gascoyne Regional Business Awards 2018. Carnarvon was well represented across all categories this year and I would like to encourage our community to keep supporting our local businesses and industry. I have been working at the Shire of Carnarvon for 3.5 years as Operations Manager for Infrastructure Services.

After I finished my schooling I worked at Main Roads Carnarvon where I completed an apprenticeship. I travelled within Western Australia and worked for different companies. Then I returned to Carnarvon, started a family and worked at RioTinto for many years. I enjoy the challenges with maintaining and improving the Carnarvon infrastructure. When I am not working I enjoy fishing and camping.

Every year I participate in the Black Dog Ride and help raise not only money but also awareness of depression and suicide prevention.

Wayne Sanderson

Operations Manager - Infrastructure Services Meet the..

BLACK DOG RIDE began in 2009 as a ride

to raise awareness of depression, evolving into a national charity involving thousands of Australians who have raised millions for mental health programs and fostered mental health awareness around the nation. Each of the riders have been touched in someway by the

black dog either by personal experience, friend or family member. Please visit their website www.blackdogride.com.au

BROADLEAF PROGRAM We are currently using the Broadleaf Spray Program to control the weeds in the lawns.

There will be approximately 2 “rounds” of the spray program spread out across a number of weeks.

During this time you may notice the lawns turn yellow. This is a normal and temporary part of the process and the lawns will become green again once the weeds have died.

CARNARVON’S ART SCENE IS THRIVING

Carnarvon library and art gallery drew record numbers to the opening of local artist Sue Helmot’s exhibition on Wednesday 8th August. As part of the 2018 Gascoyne Food Festival celebrations, the exhibition was the perfect visual compliment to the gastronomic events being held in the Gascoyne region during August and September.

Sue’s exhibition takes the viewer on a visual journey from the rainfall in Mt Augustus to catchment in the mighty Gascoyne River, transforming this delta into a rich, productive landscape. This collection celebrates not only the abundance of fresh produce and seafood, it gives a rare insight into the people who work so tirelessly to produce exceptional food for Western Australia and beyond. As the official Artist-in-Residence to the Gascoyne Food Festival, Sue was inspired to capture and share this story through her art.

Councillor Kristan Pinner attended the opening event on behalf of the Shire of Carnarvon, commending Sue for her outstanding achievement in bringing her work to share with both the community and visitors to Carnarvon. “We believe visual art contributes to a rich, vibrant community, and we will continue to support all artistic endeavours that benefit our town.

Guests and VIP’s mingled amongst the colourful artworks and got to meet the chefs responsible for producing the culinary delights enjoyed at the Taste of the Gascoyne Sunset BBQ and Long Table Lunch. Gascoyne Food Council Chairperson Michael Nixon remarking on Sue’s exhibition said, “It’s a sign of the developing culture of Carnarvon that Sue’s exhibition was such a raving success”.

SPEED DISPLAY SIGNS

The Shire of Carnarvon is continuing its commitment to creating a safe environment for all road users by installing courtesy speed display signs on Douglas Street, South Carnarvon between August and October. Excess speed has been an issue in this

area including near the school zone on Whitlock Street and the courtesy speed display signs, on loan from WALGA’s RoadWise, are the latest initiative being rolled out to help reduce travel speeds in our community.

Find out more about the courtesy speed display signs and other local road safety initiatives by visiting the WALGA RoadWise page at: www.roadwise.asn.au/roadsafety/gascoyne/shire_of_carnarvon.aspx
