II - Mission Statement:The mission of the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University is

• The preparation of a competent graduate, who is able to compete on both national and regional levels, capable of life long learning, training and tutoring, while adhering to the codes of practice of medical health services and ethics.

• The college as well, seeks continuous development of programs and courses. It also enhances expansion of applied scientific research and health programs for community services and environmental development.

The mission of this degree is to graduate a forensic specialist who knows the basics of clinical forensic medicine and forensic pathology, recognizes the types of laws and their relation to medical and medico-legal practice, understands essential medico legal requests of courts, applies the basics of medical ethics in medico-legal practice, expresses competency in dealing with different medico-legal aspects of malpractice claims and medical errors, demonstrates essential practical skills in interpreting autopsy findings and analytical results and to expresses personal attribute of compassion, honesty, and integrity in relationships with different forensic sciences specialties, colleagues, courts and the medical profession.

1. Program aims: To give participants the confidence and skills to apply basic principles of forensic medicine in different contexts. To encourage the acquisition of general scientific skills relating to autopsy procedures in investigating the cause and mechanism of death in suspected criminal cases. To train participants on how to do critical analysis of medicolegal findings, interpretation and reporting of information and data of legal significance. To offer a fresh and stimulating approach to the major legal laws in connection with forensic medicine practice, ethical and human right principles that govern the medico-legal approaches, malpractice claims and common medical errors.

2. Intended learning outcomes (ILOs):

Knowledge and understanding:By the end of the program the candidate will be able to:A1- list gross anatomical structure of some body regions of practical significance in forensic medicine practice.A2- Understand the normal and pathological structure of some body organs of major medico-legal consequences.A3- Identify the role of the civil and criminal laws in practices.A4- Define ethical aspects of health practice.

The aims of this course are to enable students to:

1. Acquire an appropriate scientific background of the anatomic relation of some body cavities and forensic anatomy of some organs, cavities and coverings of forensic applications.

2. Apply anatomic and histological findings in forensic practice of investigation of civil and criminal litigations referred from courts.

3. Describe anatomical abnormalities in some organs and their relations on performing autopsy.

4. Explain cell structure and function of some organs of the body of forensic significance.

5. Perform correct scientific approach in specimen handling and preparation for histopathology.

6. Express a degree of competency in tissue fixation, processing, Microtomy and special techniques needed during forensic examination of corpses.

7. Acquire some experiences in preparation of tissue sections, general stains and common staining methods of greater concern during forensic investigation of deaths.

2. Understand the role of meninge , pleura, pericardium, omentum and peritoneum In changing mechanisms of organ injuries found during forensic autopsy.

3. Illustrate the normal structure of the brain and components of the circle of Willis. 4. State the cell structure and function of typical cells and cell organelles and inclusions.

By the end of the course the candidate will be able to:

1. Differentiate between normal and abnormal anatomic lesions in the body of cadavers.

2. Examine competently body organs in their positions and demonstrate methods of dissections.

3. Relate anatomic abnormalities to their corresponding mechanisms of forensic applications.

4. Perform histological sections, stain it with the proper stain in different situations and describe findings in the proper ways that comply with forensic practice needs.

5. Do normal histological sections of heart, coronary arteries, liver, lungs and skin.

6. Evaluate blood smears stained slides and compare between normal and abnormal slides.

By the end of the course the candidate will be able to: 1. Identify the anatomic dissection approaches techniques performed during forensic autopsy.

2. Relate asphyxia dissection findings to the anatomical relations in neck, chest and abdomen.

The scalp, the skull, the cranial cavity, the meninges, the brain, circle of willis, sumandibular region, anterior triangle and lateral triangle of the neck

Describtive anatomy of the thorax:

The chest wall, the mediastinum, the diaphragm, the lungs and pleural cavities, anatomy of the heart and coronary arteries.

You must keep proper and updated records in your logbook to reflect the activities encountered in your training. Your logbook must be duly endorsed by an authorized signatory at the end of each semester.You will be continuously assessed by your supervisors, in consultation with head of department. An assessment will be submitted within 2 weeks of completion of each semester.
