Girlfriends Quilt Designed by Marinda Stewart
Size: 41” W x 57” H Skill Level: Confident Beginner to Intermediate *
* NOTE : This quilt uses free motion stitching to create the details (hair, face, arms, and legs) on the little girl blocks. Practice on a scrap of fabric backed with ironon tearaway stabilizer before stitching the finished blocks for the quilt. There are numerous tutorials on freemotion stitching
on the internet.

* Fussy Cut Center on Motif ** Pieced for length *** A piece 9” x 22”
Directions: 1. For (1) 8 1/2” girl block: Measure 1” in from each side at the top of one CX6574 3 1/2” square. Mark. Trim off fabric from lower outer corner to the 1” mark on each side to make a trapezoid measuring 1 1/2” at the top each and 3 1/2” at the bottom edge. Make the same cut on one end of (2) SC5333 Bright White 3 1/2” x 4 1/2” pieces to make a piece 3 1/2” on the top edge and 4 1/2” on the bottom edge. Sew the SC5333 pieces to each end of the CX6574 trapezoid as shown. Sew one SC5333 Bright White 3 1/2” x 9 1/2” piece to the top and bottom of the trapezoid unit. Make (6) total. 2. Following the manufacturer’s directions, iron ironon tearaway stabilizer on the wrong side of each block. Following the manufacturer’s directions using a water soluble fabric marker draw in legs, arms, head, and smile on doll. Use CX7603 as a reference for poses. Thread sewing machine with black thread, lower feed dog, change to darning foot and free motion stitch features as shown. Arms, legs, head, and smile each have 45 rows of stitching. NOTE : Practice the technique on scrap fabric before stitching the actual block. The process will be much easier and smoother. Stitch (6) blocks. IMPORTANT : Do not press finished block. Dampen each block with water as per directions to remove any residual water soluble ink. Let dry thoroughly before pressing. Press. Trim blocks to 8 1/2” square. 3. Sew (1) CX6574 Black 1” x 8 1/2” piece to the top and bottom of each 8 1/2” block. Sew one CX6574 Black 1” x 9 1/2” piece to each side. Make (6). 4. Sew one CX7603 2” x 9 1/2” piece to the top and bottom of each block. Sew one CX7603 2” x 12 1/2” piece to each side. Make (6).
5. Using random CX6574 1 1/2” x 12 1/2” piece as shown. Sew one each different color to the top and bottom of each block. Repeat using CX6574 1 1/2” x 14 1/2” piece sewn to each side of each block. Make (6). 6. Sew (1) CX6574 Black 2 1/2” square to each end of (1) CX5514 2 1/2” x 14 1/2” piece. Follow with another CX5514 2 1/2” piece and end with another CX6574 Black 2 1/2” square. Make (4) 2 1/2” x 34 1/2” rows as shown. 7. Sew (1) CX5514 to each side of one 14 1/2” block. Add another block to the right side of the CX5514 strip. Finish with a third CX5514 strip on the right side of the second block. Make (3) rows as shown. 8. Assemble the quilt top alternating the 2 1/2” rows with the block rows as shown. Begin and end with a 2 1/2” row to make a 34 1/2” x 50 1/2” piece. 9. Sew one CX7603 2” x 34 1/2” piece to the top and bottom of the quilt. Sew one CX7603 2” x 53 1/2” piece (pieced for length) to each side. 10. Sew one CX7458 2 1/2” x 37 1/2” piece to the top and bottom of the quilt. Sew one CX7458 2 1/2” x 57 1/2” piece (pieced for length) to each side. 11. For the backing, fold CX7172 in half horizontally. Cut along fold. Trim selvages. With right sides together sew along one selvage edge to make one 48” x 88” piece. Trim to 48” x 65” piece. 12. Layer backing, batting, and quilt top. Baste. 13. Quilt as desired. 14.
