Romans 8:1-11 - No Condemnation

You know, In spite of what one might think, it is very freeing to know that in my own efforts I am unable to live according to the Spirit, as Paul refers to Christian living in this passage. If I could then the responsibility is all mine—I live or die spiritually according to my own efforts—and believe me, my efforts aren’t worth zip. Why? Because I am so inconsistent. There is just no way I can live up to the expectation that the gospel imperative places on me.

I suspect it is the same for you. In fact it has always been that way. The whole purpose of the 10 Commandments given to Moses in the Old Testament was to show the people that they couldn’t live up to them. Hence the need of a Saviour—someone to take our place and accomplish for us that which we could not do. But that doesn’t absolve us from all responsibility. We are still called to live righteous lives—only this way—through faith in Christ and his redeeming work—we have an advocate—someone who stands with us.

Through living in Christ we have access to a merciful and forgiving God—a God who knows our weaknesses and enables us to be restored and reconciled to him when we fall. So, if we, through faith in Jesus Christ, walk according to the Spirit, that is, if we live the way God wants us to live with proper motives and a humble heart, in an attitude of prayer, then we do not come under the condemnation of our conscience when, by our own efforts, we fail. Our unrighteousness is covered over by the righteousness of Christ.

Our own efforts, devoid of the righteousness of Christ, are ‘the law of sin and death’ but in Christ, we are subject to ‘the law of the Spirit of life’. “In him (Christ) was life, and this life was the light of all people” (John 1:4). Grace and peace.

Welcome to “live” worship. Thank you for your patience and understanding throughout the months of online worship. Please listen to all instructions carefully and maintain social distancing where possible. We ask that you please continue to be patient as we work out our new “normal”.

Great news for all our regular and occasional tennis players. Our group will recommence from Tuesday 21 July at 7.30pm at the Gladstone Tennis & Squash courts. We will be using the back courts (16, 17 or 18). After paying your $5 at the office, please proceed along the path and through the outside gate to Court 15, to avoid moving through Courts 12 - 15, where fixtures will be being played. If you are not known to Tracey in the office you will need to identify yourself as playing with the church group so that you only have to pay $5. Hand sanitiser is available in the office for anyone to use and remember to maintain social distancing. Many thanks to Ofi, who has been consistent in following up with the courts. Looking forward to seeing you. Gavin Caird.
