ESTIDAMA and the Pearl Rating System

• Estidama, which means ‘sustainability’ in Arabic, is an integrated program to devise guidelines and regulations for sustainable (green) design, construction, operations and maintenance of all types ofbuildings and communities. Its aim is to create more sustainablecommunities, cities and global enterprises and to balance the four pillars of Estidama : environmental, economic, cultural and social.

• The PRS has been designed to support sustainable development from design to construction to operational accountability and provides guidance and requirements to rate a project's potential performance in relation to the four pillars of Estidama.

• QSAS is a comprehensive rating system focused on performance-based measurements to evaluate a project’s sustainability, ecological impact, and energy performance. The primary objective of QSAS is to create a sustainable built environment that minimizes ecological impact while addressing the specific regional needs and environment of Qatar.

Qatar's New Green LEED Convention Center - a Mini Masdar City

Qatar’s new LEED-certified convention center could be as “green” as Masdar City. It will boast a world first of LED lighting in exhibition halls.

The Qatar National Convention Center project is slated to be completed and ready to house events in 2011. The center will have an area of 177,000 sq meters and will have a specially designed roof containing 3,600 sqm of solar panels which will supply about 12.5% of the project total energy needs.

The center will also include other energy saving features such as LED lighting in the exhibition halls and a special wireless convention management system, reducing the need for paper while providing delegates with free internet access. It is also being aesthetically well designed with a unique curving escalator. It is being designed so that a number of events can be held at the same time.
