She is just a precious little girl, her auntm Woyach told the Express News. Shesch a trooper. She has this tiny little voice,

ut such a huge personality. Shes alwaysmiling and playing even after all shes been

    through.

A devastating diagnosis...Kennedy was just eight months old when

she was diagnosed with a Wilms tumor on herright kidney, and the girls parents receivedthe news every parent prays they will neverhave to hear.

Your child has cancer, recalled Eric,Kennedys father, in an interview with theExpress News. Its every parents worst night-mare.

It was a heartbreaking time, said Eric, butfollowing the removal of the kidney, 19 weeksof chemotherapy and a second surgery for abowel obstruction, the family thought they hadwoken from a bad dream and could move onwith the rest of their lives.

We thought everything was okay andthat she was just fine, said Eric.

However, this past January, Kennedysblood work showed complications with herremaining kidney and a biopsy revealed thather WT1 gene, which prevents tumors, hadmutated during development in the womb, causing an extremely rare medical condi-tionDenys-Drash Syndromeof which thereare just 200 diagnosed cases in the world. The sobering fact is that children with this syn-drome suffer complete kidney failure by age3, develop Wilms tumors and face many relat-

ed complications, so the race was on to get anew kidney into Kennedys little body.It was a hard-hitting blow, said Eric, but

the familywhich also includes their 6-year-old son Lukasgathered its strength andforged ahead.

Once you come to grips with what youhave to do, you can deal with things, he said. There have been many ups and downs, justlike a rollercoaster ride, but you just do what

    you have to do.

Light at the end of the tunnel...Good eventually did come for the family

as Jennifer, who was determined to be thebest match for her daughter, was able todonate a kidney to Kennedy, but the periodfrom January to July was touch and go aspotential donors were ruled out, said Eric.

Naturally we thought with our big familysurely one of us would qualify as a donor, butas one after the other of our family members

were disqualified, we were terrified ofKennedy having to go on the donor list, because that would mean months, if notyears, of dialysis, not to mention her not hav-ing the best match possible which could leadto rejection, he explained.

Thankfully, Jennifer was a viablematchWe celebrated that day like noother, Eric said. With the transplant complet-ed, the healing has begun.

The recovery has been excellent for bothKennedy and Jen, Eric said. Medically

everything looks great and actors they are both exceeding

ay.I slept in a recliner next to her bed and it

as such a privilege to do that, Eric said.Often Kennedy would wake up in pain andeed comforting and I was able to be there. Itas an amazing time, and I cant say enoughbout Childrens Hospital and the miracleorkers they have there.

With mother and daughter home andcuperating, the family is beyond grateful.

Were very blessed and now were recover-g as a family, Eric said. The key, he said, is making sure Kennedy

kes her anti-rejection medicationcurrently0 different kinds at 12-hour intervalsandinks enough water.

Thats probably the biggest challenge, xplaining to a child, If you dont take thisedication, youre not going to make it, Ericid.

Moving forward...The family is taking it one day at a time,

ic shared, noting that after her recovery, ennedy will be able to live a normal life ando just about anything she wants with thexception of direct contact sports.

Kennedy has been exposed to the med-al side of thisdoctors and nurses and check

psher whole life, so she understands thatart, he said. Now she just needs to beware that she has a kidney in the front parther body and that she needs to guard it.

Otherwise, it is back to life as usual at theKiefer household, said Eric, as Kennedydelights in being reunited with her brotherafter a too-long hospital stay.

How do you deal with the separation ofsiblings? Eric asked. Lukas understands thatKennedys kidney was broken, but he reallymissed her while she was gone. When he firstvisited her in the hospital, both of their facesjust lit up. Theyre best friends.

Eric said Lukas is thrilled to have his sisterback, and the siblings are already joined at

the hip again, watching movies together in achair, and looking forward to T-Ball and bike-riding.

Kennedy loves Barbies and dolls, but asa little sister she always wants to do whatLukas is doing, Eric said with a laugh.

The struggles that lie ahead...Hoping the worst is behind them, the

Kiefers still face the very harsh reality of a life-time of medical bills and a whole laundry listof challenges that come with the territory ofhaving an organ transplant.

Although Eric, a salesman with EMSMedical Billing in Milwaukee, and Jennifer, who works at the VA Medical Center inMilwaukee, were fortunate enough to haveunderstanding employers through their time ofneed, the bills not only remain, but will keep

coming in. Also, Kennedy will need to takeseveral costly medications for the rest of herlife as well as undergo another kidney trans-plant in about 20 years.

We have a lot of expenses right now andinsurance does not cover everything, plusKennedy will need medications that can be upto $900 per month out of pocket, said Eric. That is a tremendous financial burden, notjust now when she is living with us, but for herwhen she is on her own.

The family has teamed up with ChildrensOrgan Transplant Organization (COTA), anational non-profit that helps families navigatethe challenges associated with an organ trans-plant, and several fundraisers in honor of

Kennedyincluding a rummage sale/brat fry,a car show, a poker run and a bowlingnightare already organized and scheduled.

We appreciate all the help we get, Ericsaid. These volunteers have been outstand-ing.

West Bend West turned back one comeback bid at the statemmer baseball tournament April 19, but couldnt answer

nother one later that day.West held on to beat Sheboygan Falls in a semifinal 8-7 but

en fell to New Berlin West 11-6 in the championship game aw hours later.

Against Sheboygan Falls, West Bend West scored in four ofx innings. The Spartans scored three runs in the second, twons in the third and fourth innings and one run in the fifth inning.

Trailing 8-1 in the sixth inning, Sheboygan Falls scored five

ns off of five hits to reduce the lead to 8-6. After holding Westoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning, Sheboygan Falls Joshostek hit the ball into centerfield, allowing Eric Klemme to scoreom second base. But West closed the game as Kyle Krier field-d a grounder at third base and threw to first base for the finalut.

In the title game West Bend West scored three runs each ine third and fifth innings. West Bend West didnt get on theoard until the bottom of the fourth inning, as a bases loadedalk allowed Matt Rychtik to score from third.

West Bend West then mounted a comeback in the sixthning. A single by A.J. Emerich allowed Alec Miller to score

from second base while Krier advanced from first to secondbase. A short time later, Jacob Kopp hit a double into right field, driving in three runs. Nicholas Wolf then hit a single into left fieldand a throwing error allowed Kopp to score to tie the game at6-6.

Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh inning butNew Berlin West scored five runs in the eighth inning to win thestate summer baseball title.

I was very proud of them all season long, West Bend WestCoach Bill Albrecht said after the championship game, relaying

what he told the team after the loss to New Berlin West. As ateam and as our senior class we werent picked to be doingmuch of anything this year and we played extra innings to (com-pete for) a state championship.

Albrecht added the preseason expectations gave his teamthe incentive to defy the projections.

We werent the most talented team, we just had six hits ineight innings (referring to the title game) but we found a way tocome back. It was right there for us, Albrecht said.

He then added: Our seniors kept West baseball where itshould be, thats what Ill take out of it.

Youve been working on the outside ofour home for months now. You removede dead trees. You had the lawn treated.ou redesigned the flowerbeds. You stainede driveway. You painted the house. Youad new windows installed. The result? Therb appeal of your home has improved

onsiderably. Now you just need to addme final touches, starting with new shut-rs.

Your shutters have taken a beating overe years, and now its time you replaced

them. Before you start the shopping, you

need to determine the style of shutters youwant. Perhaps you want what you hadbefore. Perhaps you want something new.Shutters come in four basic styles: louvered, raised panel, board and batten, andBahama. Louvered are the most common, and their traditional look suits most homestyles. Raised panel shutters also feature atraditional look and work well on homeswith paneled doors. Board and batten shut-ters are simple in designa few vertical slatsheld together by a horizontal board on the

top and bottomand suit most rustic, country

homes. Bahama, or hurricane, shuttersserve both form and function, adding atouch of style while protecting the windowsof homes in areas prone to hurricaneweather. They cover the entire window andopen like an awning.

Shutters come in a variety of materials.PVC is popular with homeowners becauseit requires very little maintenance. It doesfade, crack, dent and bend, however.Wood is another popular choice, and thereare several types of wood suitable for shut-ters. Some of these include pine, cedar, cypress and redwood. Wood does requiresome maintenance, in particular primer, paint and sealer. If you plan to use Bahamashutters, you will also have to select hard-ware. A number of styles are available for

shutter dogs, hinges, tie-backs and hold-backs, locks and caps. Hand-forged are thebest.

Once you have an idea of the shuttersyou want, you will need to take accuratemeasurements. Measure your old shuttersand have the figures with you when you goshopping. Homeowners who do not haveshutters might want to have a professional

come out to their home and

measurements. For the best results, you shutters locally or online wvendor. Ask questions, knowpurchasing and make sure yhandle the installation yoursomeone reputable. You spend a lot on new shutters othem during the installation pyour investment with smarbeginning to end.
