The Museum of Wisconsin Art offi-cially opened the doors on its new31,700-square-foot facility April 6.
For the staff, the volunteers and theboard (of directors), this has been aneight-year labor of love, museumboard President Dale Kent said at thestart of the formal program. It was builton the backs of dreamers and by thehands of doers. This is to me just anoth-er example of the can-do, bootstrap atti-tude of this community up here in WestBend.
The new facility is located at 205Veterans Avenue in West Bend. It is themost recent evolution of a facility thatstarted as the West Bend Gallery ofFine Art in 1961 with collections fromartist Carl Von Marr from the Pick fami-ly. Kent noted the facility has grown tobecome a regional art facility thatshowcases Wisconsin art.
What we hope we built is a gath-ering spot for artists, art lovers in thecommunity we want this place to bevibrant and fun, Kent said. We wantthis to be every artists home away fromhome and we want the entire WestBend area to be so proud of this build-ing that whenever you have out of townguests at your home you make it a point
to drive by here and show this place off
as a measure of pride you have in yourhometown.
West Bend Mayor KraigSadownikow said he sought to come upwith words to describe the new facilityand ended up with wow, congratu-lations, and thank you.
Wow is pretty obvious. From theexterior architecture, landmark buildingthats been created here to maybemore importantly the arts thats hang-ing on the wall, the conversation andcamaraderie that will take place in herefor generations, Sadownikow said.
George Tzougros, executive direc-tor of the Wisconsin Arts Board, saidthe new facility became possible due tothe commitment from the museum yearsago to collect Wisconsin art.
The work that this museum hasdone to support Wisconsin art has been(known) already, and this space is onlygoing to leap that into the strato-sphere, Tzougros said.
Tzougros also cited the creativity ofthe art from the early days of the stateto the present.
Why is that important? For two rea-sons: Soon there will be children stream-ing through this building and their cre-ativity will be inspired. Who knowswhat theyre going to do, whethertheyre going to become artists ortheyre going to become any other
employee or entrepreneur in the s tate,
Tzougros said. Thats a second part ofit: Inspire the workforce and entrepre-neurs of the future.
Tzougros added the facility willdraw talent to West Bend and notedother ways in which the community willbenefit.

(BPT) - "What is that rattling? Is it seri-us?" We all can get a little paranoidbout a new sound our car is making.
ose sounds can certainly be annoying,ut what people don't realize is sometimesose sounds may be linked to somethingore serious.
About 7 percent of car crashes areaused by some kind of vehicle failure, withe degradation and brake system failurespping the list, according to the Nationalotor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey
om the National Highway Traffic Safetydministration. But tire and brake failureen't the only types of vehicle problems
that can lead to accidents - engine, steeringsystem and suspension failures also causecrashes.
"Getting your oil changed, tires rotatedand brake pads checked regularly not onlyhelps keep your car running smoothly, but italso helps keep you and your family safe,"says Matt Myers, senior vice president ofclaims with Erie Insurance. "It's also impor-tant to check your car's transmission fluidsand get the 50,000-mile and 100,000-milechecks. It might sound like a lot, but regularpreventative maintenance is the best way tokeep those strange car noises - and acci-dents - to a minimum."
Here are six common car noises peoplehear and what they could mean:
Humming or groaningWhen you hear humming while driving
at faster speeds, it's a sign there probablyis some wear on your tires, which can lead
to serious issues. It could be located on theinsides of your tires, which is hard to diag-nose on your own, but not having it
checked is a risk, because the steel belts inthe tire might be coming apart.
GrowlingThis noise could change or even go
away when you turn the wheel, but it is usu-ally caused by a defective front wheel bear-ing. The change in noise could be a resultof the shift in the weight of the car as youturn.
Whining and creakingYou might hear these noises backing up
or turning. It could be the result of a balljoint or tie rod seizing up.
SqueakingThis can be a high-pitched, steady
annoyance that lets you know it's time to

By Craig W. ArmstrongThe snow and ice have melted, the roads
e clear and spring is here. Winter driving
an be dangerous and very frustrating.oing to the store or getting to work duringe winter takes planning. You have to allowr road conditions, traffic and the stress ofking to the ice roads. Once spring arrives, ost people just want to relax behind theheel and enjoy the open road. But there ismething else to consider that you might not
ave thought about during the winter months-as.
Getting from place to place in the winterenough to occupy your mind, but once theads are clear, you want to drive farther
nd faster, and that means using more gas.
Here are a few ways to save on gas as youspend more time in your vehicle.
Slow down and save. The faster you go,
the fewer miles you will get to the gallon.Driving over 60 mph will decrease your gasmileage. It has been estimated that every 5mph over 60 you drive, you are going toconsume more fuel. Besides how fast you aredriving, consider HOW you are driving. Ifyou rapidly accelerate or brake, you areusing more gas and will lower your mileageby more than 30%.
Keep the pressure under control. Correcttire pressure is crucial to good gas mileage.Make sure that your tires are properly inflat-ed. The correct PSI (pounds per square inch)can be found on the tire, on the sticker on the
door or in your owner's manual.Change your oil regularly. The classic
rule of thumb is to change your oil every
three months or 3,000 miles. This rule is asource of great debate. The point at whichoil breaks down has improved over the yearsand many experts feel today's oil lastslonger. The best way to judge when your oilneeds to be changed is by consulting thevehicle owner's manual.
Pace yourself. If you do a lot of highwaydriving, use your cruise control. This willallow you to keep a constant rate of speedand improve your gas mileage.
Lighten your load. During the wintermonths, you may have put bags of salt orsand in your trunk for added weight andtraction. Now is the time to get rid of them.A lighter vehicle is a more fuel-efficient vehi-cle. Drag on your vehicle decreases its effi-
ciency by 2%. Get rid of any nonessentialitems in your car and save some money ongas.
Spring is the time to shake off the cold of
winter and enjoy the warmeremember it may be warmer prices are still the same.

still some ways to get your vehicle ready forspring and save some money at the sametime. Check your tire pressure. Tires that aren'tinflated to the correct PSI (pounds per squareinch) create more friction, make the vehiclework harder and use more gas. Keeping yourtires properly inflated saves you money at the

By Craig W. Armstrong"It's like a muffled squeak followed by agh-pitched bong, and sometimes it justums. It almost sounds like it's humming thatd ABBA song...oh, I can't remember the
ame of it, but it sounds like that."Is this how you explain to your mechan-
the noise your vehicle is making? Haveou ever used the word "galonk"? Haveou ever imitated a Madagascar hissingockroach when describing a noise or men-oned anything about what it would soundke if someone squeezed a duck...reallyard? If you answered yes to any of theseuestions, you probably need help convey-g troublesome sounds coming from your
ehicle.Cars and trucks make lots of sounds;
me are normal and some are a definite
dication that something is not functioningoperly. Most people have a good idea ofhich sounds are normal and which oneseed to be checked out. The importanting is to be as accurate as possible whenescribing those abnormal noises to yourechanic. Like doctors, mechanics need toave a reasonable and thorough explana-on of the "patient's" symptoms; they willly on you to give them that information.
Be able to explain when you hear theoise. Is it at start-up or when you turn offe vehicle, when you are going uphill oround a curve, when you're braking orhen the gears shift? Be specific in your
explanation.Next describe the location of the sound.Rather than using the terms "right" or "left"side of the vehicle, you can avoid confusionby referring to the "driver's side" and the"passenger's side." Is the noise coming fromthe engine, underneath the car, from therear, around the tires? You may even wantto draw a diagram indicating the trouble-some spot.
Often a mechanic will test-drive yourvehicle and listen for sounds so they canaccurately diagnose the problem, but howmany times have you taken in your car andit won't make the noise or "do that thing" forthe mechanic? The main way to avoid thisfrustration is to be an expert, prepared wit-ness.
Explain any and all known "maladies"
associated with the noise. There may bevibration or leaking fluid. Explain whereyou feel the vibration-in the steering wheel, under your feet, etc. Indicate the location ofany leak and the color of the fluid if possi-ble. Are there any other noticeable differ-ences in how the vehicle is riding or han-dling? To repeat: Be thorough and specificin your explanation.
Mechanics expect a certain amount ofcharades from customers (and they proba-bly enjoy them sometimes), but accuracy inyour explanation will help them do a betterjob of repairing your vehicle and gettingyou back on the road faster.

ing the battery, engine mechanical, power-train control, fuel, ignition and emissions. Notevery shop defines a tune-up in this way, how-ever. Generally, the more involved the tune-up, the more it costs.
When scheduling a tune-up, it is importantthat you find out what it will entail and howmuch it will cost. Be wary of really low esti-mates; chances are the shop is pushing foryour business and the final bill for the tune-upwill be much higher.
The best shops understand that not alldrivers know what a tune-up is and requestone on the assumption that it will fix whateveris wrong with their vehicle. They will ask whyyou think your vehicle needs a tune-up and gofrom there. You may discover that what you
really need are new batterythan new spark plugs.
Once you have severadown and compare them. Swhose estimate includes a inspection at a fair price. Yosure that when you drive awayour vehicle is running smoothly.
The term "tune-up" meansto different people. Keep thatshop around for estimates. Kare getting before you take and if you are getting a tuneson other than maintenance iinformation to the shop. If could end up paying for a repair.

By Sam EricksonHome buying is a complicated process, so
ost people spend time preparing themselvesy getting to know the market and researching
good team. Research can only take you sor, though. Here are some things that mightrprise you during your home buying process.
The paperwork. After the bad lendingabits that led to the recent housing crash, there
more paperwork than ever. There will beaperwork when you sign an agreement with
your real estate agent. There will be paper-work when you make an offer, and there willbe lots of paperwork when you go for closing. There will even be paperwork that verifies that
your paperwork is your paperwork. It can bedizzying and confusing, but you should neversign paperwork that you dont understand.Experts have a tendency to move throughpaperwork quickly because they know what itis, but youve got the right to demand explana-tion.
The home inspection can derail a homepurchase. After a long search, youve finallyput an offer in that has been accepted, andyoure elated. Now youre waiting only on the
home inspection. Be prepared, the homeinspector will find problems. If it comes backwith lots of problems, there will be negotiation.A bad inspection doesnt spell the death knellfor a deal, but if there are significant problemsor the seller is unwilling to negotiate in waysthat you think are reasonable, then a bad homeinspection can lead you to pull out of animpending deal.
Extra expenses. While youve been savingfor the down payment, there are always goingto be some extra expenses in the home buyingprocess. You might need to pay for additional
home inspections. You might some estimates for repairs, whecosmetic. You might need to refor a few days. Stash away so
meet these needs.Things will not go as you many moving parts to a housseller, agents, lenders, inspectthere is always the possibility tmake a decision that will put road to your new home. Tryinand available can help you evolving needs of this diverse you on track. The process is creward is just as great, so through some unexpected huyour first home.
