MCKILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Washington County District Attorney’s Office saw a slight decline in several of the cases that were filed in court in 2012 compared with the previous year while other areas increased, according to information presented by District Attorney Mark Bensen. Bensen presented his report to the Washington County Board May 14. Bensen explained that the five prose- cutors in his office are paid by the state of Wisconsin while the nine other office staff are paid by county taxpay- ers. According to Bensen’s report, the number of defendants charged declined from 1,771 in 2011 to 1,658 last year. Also: •The number of charges for felonies declined from 592 in 2011 to 570 last year; •The number of misdemeanors filed increased from 1,270 in 2011 to 1,453 last year; •The number of criminal traffic counts declined from 989 in 2011 to 969 in 2012; •The number of traffic pretrials increased from 945 in 2011 to 1,055 in 2012; •The number of sentences imposed with probation increased from 527 in 2011 to 548 last year. The number of sentences imposed with prison time increased from 102 in 2011 to 121 last year. The number of sentences imposed with extended supervision increased from 101 in 2011 to 120 last year while sentences imposed with jail time decreased from 594 in 2011 to 553 last year. Bensen said that traffic pretrials increased, and explained that once a month people charged with traffic offenses are in courthouse and the dis- trict attorney meet with the defendants to negotiate a pleas bargain to avoid trial. According to Bensen, his office will handle 40 to 50 trials annually. He said the big change has been that the number of multi-day trials have increased, citing a three-day drunk driving trial he was involved with ear- lier this year. “As the criminal penalties go up, the stakes are higher, some of these tri- als are taking a longer period of time,” Bensen said. Bensen said that one trend related to drunk driving involves increased instances of individuals intoxicated on medications or substances other than alcohol. He said those cases can be more challenging to prosecute. A recent trend has been the increase in heroin use and overdoses. Bensen said that “pretty much all of the heroin in southeast Wisconsin comes from Milwaukee. Every heroin drug overdose case our law enforce- ment officers treat as a crime.” Another change that has occurred involves the victim impact panels which individuals convicted of drunk driving are required to attend. By Tresa EricksonIt's no secret. While weddings are

pposed to be a source of joy, theyan also be a source of conflict. Asoon as the question is popped and thengagement is announced, couples areften bombarded with advice from well-eaning family and friends. Here are

ome tips to help you keep your sanitytact and conflict to a minimum duringe planning of your wedding.

Be realistic_Know from the get-goat people are going to be excited andany of them will want to be involvedyour wedding planning, even if it just

oling out advice to you. Involve asany of them as you can, but never

se sight of the fact that it is your wed-ng. Listen to what they have to say,se what you can and leave it at that.ever ever give someone the upper

and, unless it is what you and youreloved want.

Be understanding_Some peoplean't help themselves. They have anpinion and they simply must share itith you, even if it is not really theirace to do so. Again, honor their needhelp by listening but don't feel obli-

ated to follow their advice. Thankem for their advice, reassure them youill take it under consideration andove on.

Be direct_Some people cannot take

o for an answer. Be aware of this andarn how to deal with the pressure. Let

them know that while you appreciatetheir idea, it will not work for you. Donot give in and make unnecessary com-promises. If they continue to push, explain to them what you have chosento do so instead. The additional infor-mation might be enough to satisfy them.

Be clear_Give those involved clear-ly defined roles and make your wishesknown to them. Communicate daily, either through email or phone, what hasand hasn't been done. Set up a websiteto keep everyone informed of theprogress. The more you communicate, the less chance there will be of a mis-understanding later.

Be proactive_Spot the potential for

conflict and take steps to avoid it. Ifyour parents divorced on unhappyterms, do not expect them to worktogether on your wedding. Have eachof them assist you with different tasksand seat them apart at your wedding. The same goes for any other family orfriends in conflict. Respect their needfor distance.

Keeping the peace at a weddingcan be difficult, but it is not impossible. The key is to listen as much as possible,be gracious but firm, and communicateyour wishes. Your wedding should be areflection of you and the person you'remarrying, not those helping to foot thebill or standing by you at the ceremony.

 Just you and your beloved.

By Sam EricksonThere’s only one chance to make a first

pression. You’ve got to put your best foot

rward. These are both cliches, but theybsolutely apply when you are trying toll your home, particularly in a challeng-g market. There are a few secrets to stag-g a home that will allow you to make areat first impression on potential buyers.

One thing you can do is add extra lightto your home, particularly if you live in atraditionally dreary part of the country.

Consider adding bulbs with extra wattageto the fixtures or more lamps to your home.Clean windows inside and out and consid-er changing out window fixtures for lighter, more transparent ones.

Of course, if some of the lights don’t

work, you’ll want to get them fixed, andthat should really be the first step in prep-ping your home for sale — fixing anything

that’s broken. Whether it is a leaky faucetor a door that doesn’t close all the way, making a cosmetic change to the housewill send the subtle signal that it has beenwell cared for in the time that you werethere.

People aren’t interesteddirty house, so it’s essentialbe clean at all times for v

eople could stop by at any time. Visitorsill understand a few dirty dishes or annmade bed, but it is best to keep anyctual evidence of your existence as cleans possible. Many people decide to hire aeaning company. You can do this for theitial clean or have a service come invery week to tidy things up for you, epending on what your budget wil l allow.

Remove the clutter. If there’s one thinghomebuyer wants, it is space to put theirings. If the house is full of your stuff, it

an be more difficult for buyers to envisionemselves in the home. If you can moverge pieces of furniture, perhaps ones youill be discarding anyway, you’ll createore space for buyers. In particular, youill want to remove items that might alien-e large groups of buyers, including items

a political or religious nature. Buyers

often connect emotionally with a home, and items like these might stop that emo-tional connection from happening.

While you are removing the clutter, you’ll also want to get the right props.Mirrors can make rooms seem larger andincrease the amount of available light.Plants can make a home seem warm andinviting. Professional stagers often uselarge bowls of fruit, colorfully arrangedcookbooks in the kitchen and eye-catching

wall sconces to add a touch of eleganceand panache, making the home stand outfrom the others potential buyers have seen.

Of course, professional stagers doexist, and you could certainly employ acompany to help you, but you can do mostof the work yourself in a few simple steps.Staging a home can interfere with yourdaily living, but, if you do it well, there’s noreason why it should be an interference forvery long.
