“People fail to realize how much thesedifferent society organizations can steer theway that we live. This is part of somethingthat is missing in these organizations, they

don’t have that women’s group that standsup and says ‘no, this isn’t right. We need todo it this way.’”

Craemer displayed several photos fromhis experience in Kanduhar, including train-ing and photos of the city. A used car lot, photos of boys selling ice cream andafghan soda were among the photos. Helater showed a photo of cats that wereadopted to keep smaller rodents awayfrom the area.

Craemer worked in the governor’spalace. Craemer described the governor ofKanduhar as a “great guy” who was bornin the city but who fled when the Sovietsoccupied the country in the 1980s. Thegovernor first went to Switzerland thengraduated from the University of Nebraska

with a degree in agriculture and taught inWausau for a time.

“He could leave at any time, he doesn’tneed to be there. He could come back tothe United States and teach,” Craemer saidof the governor. He added there werenumerous attempts on the governor’s life.

“He stayed because of his commitmentto his people,” Craemer said.

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winte

Dear Dr.s Winter: Can you make mydentures non-removable?

Details: I had my few remaining teeth removedand torus surgery done in Dec of 2008 and fulldentures (upper and lower) put in immediately. It went well. My dentist explained that after ayear of complete healing I would probablyrequire a re-lining at a cost of $1000. I wouldlike to explore my other options. I am tired of

using adhesives 2-3 times a day. I am a 58 yr oldhealthy active woman. thanks

Answer: Dear Danielle, you sound like anexcellent candidate for "fixed teeth." When adenture needs relining it is because the gumtissues have healed and shrunken after theinitial extractions. The rubbing of the dentureagainst this tissue leads to bone loss as well.People lose bone at an alarming rate and overthe first 5 years there can be a loss of 60% of theoriginal bone height and or width. If you comein for a comprehensive examination and x-rayvisit we can discuss your options, the associatedcosts and the time involved to help you reachyour goals.

Options for fixed dentistry on implants will beeither a "hybrid" prosthesis-a fixed denture thatis cemented or screwed into the implants or afixed porcelain bridge on implants. In order foryou to get these prostheses you would need 6-9

implants in the upper arch and 5-9 implants inthe lower jaw. The number of implants dependson the quality, quantity and location of yourexisting bone as well as your budget.

I often explain to patients that if you go with aprosthesis where only 4 implants are placed and1 fails, you have a complete failure of thebridge. So using more supports will improve theengineering of the prosthesis and decrease theforces on each individual implant.

If the implants are found to be too expensive for

the number required, then sometimeimplants can be placed with an interion-denture, until more implants afforded. Then the prosthesis can be from a removable to a fixed bridge.concept of "Upgradeable Dentistry" allpatients to sequentially upgrade theioptions based upon their financial, emand personal readiness. You can rRichard Winter's articles on Upgradeabtistry at WWW.WINTERDENTALunder publications to see more exam

these implant options as well as videoPlease call our office at 414-464-schedule your visit. I look forwmeeting you.

(BPT) - Super storms like Sandy, major floods in Colorado and other nat-ural disasters remind us of the devastat-ing impact a long-term power outagecan have on a community. But it doesn'ttake a major disaster to take down thepower - and make life difficult - for days.A basic winter storm with heavy snowand ice can do the trick, too.

"Extended power loss in the wake ofa storm or natural disaster can be asdamaging and threatening as the disas-ter itself," cautions Ed Del Grande, amaster contractor and nationally syndi-cated home improvement expert. "Foodspoiling in the refrigerator or an uncom-fortable temperature in your home maybe the least of your worries. When thepower's out, your home's sump pumpwon't work and could cause flooding. Ahome-based business could lose impor-tant data and days of operations. Andfamily members with special needs maybe especially affected.

With hurricane season in full swing

and winter rapidly approaching, itmakes sense to prepare your home andfamily to face a potential power outage. The experts at Kohler Generators offersome advice:

* Have a plan that covers how youwill evacuate your home and neighbor-hood, if necessary, an established meet-ing place if you lose contact with lovedones, and a list of important phone num-bers such as doctors, family members, etc.

* Prepare an emergency kit using abackpack or a large plastic bucket witha lid. Stock it with three days' worth ofnonperishable food and water, a flash-light with extra batteries, a battery-pow-ered or hand-cranked radio, battery-powered clock, first aid kit, cash, med-ications and a CD or USB drive that con-tains digital copies of important docu-ments. Store your kit in a secure locationthat you can get to easily in case ofemergency.

* If you're ordered to evacuate, do

so immediately. If you're able to ride outthe storm in your home, turn off and/orunplug major appliances like waterheaters, stoves and air conditioningunits. Unplug electronics like TVs andPCs, microwaves and stereos. This willhelp prevent damage to appliances andavoid overloading the system when thepower comes back on. Leave just onelight on so you'll know when the power isrestored.

* Never connect a portable genera-tor directly into the electrical system ofyour home; electricity could flow back-ward into the power lines, endangeringlives. Plug appliances directly into aportable generator using properly ratedextension cords. Make sure the portablegenerator is properly vented to avoid therisk of carbon monoxide poisoning.Never bring a portable generator intoyour home, garage or on a porch. Keepit outside with plenty of ventilation at alltimes.

* To keep your home up-and-runningduring a power outage, consider perma-nently installing a standby generatorbefore trouble arrives. While portablegenerators can power one or two appli-ances, a standby generator can supply

power for your whole house. Asional installer can place a standerator outside your home; it lookto a central air conditioning uruns on natural gas or propanexisting gas lines. When the powout, the standby generator automturns on to power critical and cated appliances and systems heating and cooling, lights, refrigsump pumps and home security

Kohler, a leading manufacautomatic standby generators, homeowners considering a standerator to:

* Look for a unit that offerconsistent power and can handlloads. A generator that producstandard power could damage cated electronics like HD TVs,and computers. A generator thgles to handle heavy loads willefficient and may even fail in a p

* Choose a unit that can poquickly, allowing you to keep yofunctioning without interruptionthat powers up slowly may only hfew circuits at a time, forcingchoose between which essentiaance or system you'll power up f

* Consider appearance, standby unit sits outside the homlook for a unit that is corrosion-re

an especially important consifor homes near water.
