As Town of Jackson residentDennis Jeske recalls his recent daytrip to Washington, D.C., it is hard forhim to not get a bit choked up.

As one of the participants on thefirst ever Yellow Ribbon Honor Flightfor Wisconsin Vietnam veterans,Jeske said the trip was the experi-ence of a lifetime.

I was overwhelmed and soimpressed, he said. I am so gratefulto everyone who put this together.

Jeske said his daywhich includ-ed a walk along the VietnamVeterans Memorial Wall, a stop atthe Lincoln Memorial, lunch at theSmithsonian and a visit to the Tombof the Unknown Soldier at ArlingtonNational Cemetery where the groupwitnessed the Changing of theGuardwas one he will never forget.

The whole thing was so mov-ing, said Jeske. I just cant sayenough about it.

Jeske was one of 114 individualsrandomly selected out of 525 appli-cations for this one time-only trip forVietnam veterans. The Aug. 3 eventwas organized by Appleton-basedOld Glory Honor Flight, which hasarranged numerous trips for World

War II veterans, to commemorate the40th anniversary of the end of hostil-ities in Vietnam.

The hero treatment, said Jeske, began from the moment he and theother veterans arrived at WittmanRegional Airport in Oshkosh, wherethe annual EAA AirVenture aviationcelebration was taking place.

Even at 5 a.m., there was asmall group greeting uspolice offi-cers, volunteers, people from the air-port, he said. That was really nice.

After a greeting from Medal ofHonor recipient and Vietnam veteran

Gary Wetzel of Oak Creek, the play-ing of Taps and a prayer, the mendeparted on their early morningAmerican Airlines flight.

Their first stop, at The Wall, putJeske in a p lace of solemn reflectionas he watched his fellow veteranssearch for the names of friends theyhad lost in the war.

I was relieved I didnt see any-one I knew (on The Wall), but I hadgreat respect for the men who did(find familiar names), he said.

The day of remembrance broughtfull circle a journey that began forJeske in 1966.

Drafted into the Army and thensubsequently selected by the MarineCorps at the age of 21, Jeske was

    working at A.O.Smitha job he

ended up holding for 42yearswhen his country called himfor duty.

I was surprised and shocked,he said. I just looked at it like,When the time comes that they needme, theyll call me.

Jeske spent the next year on awhirlwind, completing a veryrough boot camp in San Diego, going through various forms of train-ing, coming home to get married andspending a summer with an artillerygroup in North Carolina. In January1967 he shipped out to Okinawaand remained there for six months.

    Drs. Richard and Bruce

Dear Dr. Winter, I was wondering if most peopleare happy with their dentures? Do they eat well? Ihave 6 veneers that have failed. After they wereinstalled I couldn't eat or speak properly and my back

teeth didn't touch any more! Then the dentist groundon 22 other teeth to make them fit and my bite is offand I am miserable. I would like to have all my teethpulled and have dentures! How much does this costand will I be happy?

Dear Janet, I am sorry you are having problems. From your question, I am not sure I fully understandwhat you are going through. You may have a biteproblem, a skeletal problem or a cosmetic issue or acombination of the above. First, you should realizethat If you can keep your teeth you will chew moreefficiently, eat better, extract better nutrition fromyour food and be happier in the long run. People thathave had dentures for 5 years typically chew with onefifth the biting force of people that have their naturalteeth.

Second, dentures don't work like teeth. They arebig pieces of acrylic with denture teeth. They blockthe roof of your mouth from taste sensations and theycan dislodge with sneezing, yawning or chewing.Over time they will contribute to further deteriorationof the underlying bone through movement of the

dentures and friction. So if your situation can beidentified, and fixed, that is what you should do. It isvery easy to think that pulling teeth and gettingdentures will be a solution but in reality they renderyou a dental cripple with a prosthesis that must berelined or remade every 3-5 years as your gum tissueschange. Then if you want to replace these dentureswith implant retained dentures or bridges it can be along and expensive course of treatment compared tosaving your natural teeth. So your dentist shouldevaluate your bite and cosmetics from before yourveneers were done and try and recreate the situationwhere you were comfortable and happy. We would behappy to see you for a second opinion.

Dear Dr. Winter, My wife just had grafting to hergums because they were receding. Her dentist says shenow needs to have braces to prevent the recessionfrom coming back. Is this common practice? It seemsa bit illogical, as her teeth are pretty straight. Thanks.

Dear Neal, grafting for root recession is a

common practice in dentistry. Threcession was probably discussedprior to the surgery. If the positiocontributed to this recession than aprevent the recession from returninprobably discussed. Certainly yoursay no to the braces but if the denecessary to prevent a recurrence

consider this option. It is also possireshaping or recontouring of the teeforces that may have accelerated thshould ask the dentist if occlusaladjustment could be an option to b

It was an adventure, he said of his timeJapan. Me and another fellow, who was

so married, tried to stay away from thears and the ladies, so we would take a cab far as we could go up the island, or weould go beach-combing to keep busy.

In June of that year, Jeske shipped outgain, wrapping up his time in the militaryth a relatively uneventful six months inetnam.

Now the father of five grown childrennd married for 28 years to wife Patricia, ske said he looks back on his time of serv-e with a grateful heartbecause he realizess personal outcome could have been veryfferent.

Thank God it was a safe time (when Irved), he said. I got to swim in two

ceans, see both coasts and spend time inawaii. And Vietnam was a beautiful coun-y; it was just too bad there was a war.

Jeske regards the period of 1966-68 asa time of growth.

It taught me a lot about myself, he said.I learned a lot and became able to do a lotof things I didnt know how to do beforethat.

So when he received the call this summerthat he would get to revisit that season of hislife, Jeske said he considered himself verylucky.

    Indeed, everywhere the veterans went

that day they were thanked and cheered. As their flight departed, three P-51Mustang fighters escorted the plane and asit landed at the Ronald Reagan Airport, theveterans were greeted by an even biggercrowd, and the plane received a watersalute by an airport fire truck, Jeske recalled.

People thanked us all day, he said. While we were at the Lincoln Memorial, tourists started gathering around us and tak-ing our pictures. A mother had her 5-year-oldson shake my hand. It was wonderful.

However, the biggest fanfare wasreserved for when the vets returned toAirVenture that evening as they were wel-comed back by thousands of peopleinclud-ing officials such as Sen. Ron Johnsonwithsigns, hugs and gratitude.

We walked through more than threeblocks of people, two or three deep, lined upto meet us and thank us, said Jeske, whosepersonal greetings included a hug from his10-year-old grandson. It seemed to go on

forever; it was just amazing. The evening wrapped up with a concertby actor Gary Sinise's Lt. Dan Band and aperformance of "Tie A Yellow Ribbon byTony Orlando.

Jeske said the Honor Flight experiencewill be filed away with his very best memo-ries.

Aside from my marriage and my kids, this was one of the highlights of my life, hesaid.
