MANAGING EDITOR

While veterans have “melted in” to soci-ety, the guest speaker at the Veterans Dayprogram at UW-Washington County Nov.11 spoke of the need to recognize theirservice.

“Though only a few, relatively few haveserved, every American — no matter wherethey live, no matter what their opinions —we all reap the benefits of their service,”Kleinmaus said.

Kleinmaus noted that all across thecountry on Nov. 11 programs were beingheld to pay tribute to the sacrifices made byAmerica’s veterans.

“Our veterans cherish the values onwhich our nation was founded. They brave-ly answered the call to preserve those free-doms and their service should make everyAmerican feel a deep sense of pride,”Kleinmaus said.

In the era of the 24 hour news cycleand social media, Kleinmaus said it can beeasy to forget the impact veterans have hadon the lives of Americans.

“So this Veterans Day, I’m making it mypersonal mission to make sure my friends,my neighbors know that too,” Kleinmaussaid. “You see, veterans, we’ve kind of melt-ed into society.”

Kleinmaus recalled participating in amilitary funeral a month ago when he wasapproached by a neighbor of the

deceased. The neighbor said she didn’tknow her neighbor had served in the mili-tary.

“Our veterans, they’re your neighbors, they go to church with you, they work withyou, and yet we do not know they are vet-erans,” Kleinmaus said.

Kleinmaus asked those veterans atten-dance to stand, at which point they weregiven a round of applause.

“We must not forget the thousands ofour best and brightest who are currentlydeployed all over the world, defending ourfreedom, and we pray for their safe return,”Kleinmaus said. “We stand ready to sup-port them and their families while they areaway.”

Kleinmaus also recalled a moment justbefore his presentation. Kleinmaus servedwith the 704th Maintenance Battalion inVietnam. Earlier in the day, a person whoread Kleinmaus bio in a newspaper articleasked what company he served in. It turnedout Kleinmaus was in Charlie Companywhile the other person served D Company.

“He was there at the same time in thesame places I was at. After 50 years wefinally get together,” Kleinmaus said.

Later during the program, the YoungPatriots, a singing group portraying WorldWar II era WACs, sang four songs. As thetrio began to sing the chorus for “God BlessAmerica” the audience stood up and sangwith them.
