What the qualifications meanOur friendly advisers can help you identify the perfect route to get the skills and/or career that you’re looking for. They can explain in more detail about the course levels, but here’s a rough guide to help you with your choice now.

Pre-entry level coursesThese practical courses will give you valuable life skills. They are particularly suitable if you have learning difficulties. You will be supported by a specialist tutor, who’ll give you the extra learning support you need to get on. We can also meet you when you arrive at College and take you to and from classes every day.

Entry levelThese courses are designed to give people with no prior educational qualifications the basic English, maths and IT skills needed to progress on to higher level courses.

English, maths and ITThese are very important to employers and universities and help develop the quality of your work. You can study separate qualifications in English, maths and IT. In tutorials and subject classes you will build up a portfolio of work and complete key skills assignments.

Level 1These courses are equivalent to GCSEs at grade D-G.

Level 2These courses are equivalent to GCSEs at grade A-C.

BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary DiplomaThis is a six unit course, equivalent to one A Level.

Supporting your studies (continued)

We need the feedback of our students to make life at college better for future students. As a student we will ask you to give feedback through surveys, and you can come to the student conference or to Question Times with our principal. Last year, in direct response to students’ comments, we rolled out wifi across the campus and introduced card payments in our diner. You said – we listened!

Stonewall College ChampionsWe are proud to be working with Stonewall to develop our work within the Stonewall College Champions programme.

With Stonewall’s support, we are building on our work in celebrating difference among the student community and tackling any instances of homophobia.

We are working to make sure that we consider these issues across our work and college life – from our policies and the language we use, to tutorials, activities, events and the books and publications we have for our students’ reference. We are also committed to working with our local community to tackle homophobic bullying and celebrate difference within our wider community engagement work.

Student activitiesIt’s not all work at the College and our dedicated enrichment team organises a range of activities for you. These include our annual Freshers’ Fair, HE and employability fairs, sports programmes, motivational speakers, cultural and health events, trips (such as paintballing), and much more. The student lounge is an informal and friendly place to meet other students between your lessons and is often the focal point of student social activities.

You said…we listened

Student LeadershipThere are plenty of opportunities for you to become involved in the College, to work towards making improvements and have a say in how the College is led. Our Student Association is elected by students to lead on activities and events which improve students’ experience. You can also become involved as a Class Rep and represent the views and interests of your classmates.

Sports AcademiesHCC is renowned for its sporting success. Our award-winning (and cup-winning!) Sports Academies in athletics, basketball, boxing, cricket and football, give you the chance to combine professional standard training with academic study. The Academies’ performance is consistently outstanding, many of our sports men and women progress to university teams and our very best sports men and women go on to represent their country!

Supporting your studies (continued)

RESPECT If you’re going to succeed, you need to take

College seriously.

You must attend 100% of your timetabled lessons including tutorials and functional skills.

You must be punctual; that means if your lesson starts at 9am – you need to be in your class, with your books, notes, pens and materials ready before 9am.

Your behaviour should be respectful and civilised at all times and in line with the values of our community. In return, you’ll get respect from all College staff.

You must complete all your homework and assignments properly and on time. Expect to spend 5–10 hours on homework each week on a full-qualification programme, so organise your time so you can do this.

Use your Individual Learning Plan to improve your grades. This process will help you to become independent and to be aware of your strengths and areas you need to develop.

Book your holidays outside of term time.

Revise and prepare for your exams and final course submissions.

To get a place on the course you want, you need to apply as soon as possible. But don’t worry; you’re not committed at this stage – you can change your mind about your course later on.

The following steps are for all courses in this guide with the exception of our “courses for fun and recreation” which are shown on pages 17-25. For information on how to enrol on those courses, have a look at page 17.

Getting on the right course

Once you’ve decided which course you’d like to study, post or hand in your completed application form to the Customer Service team. The application form is in the middle of this guide and the address to return the form to is printed on it. You can also apply online at www.hackney.ac.uk.

We’ll invite you to an interview and/or assessment. It’s a great time to talk to the tutor to make sure it’s the right course for you. You may need to do an online or written initial assessment. Don’t worry! It’s just to get an idea of the level you’re at so we can make sure you join the right course.

If you are offered a place, you will be invited into College to complete your enrolment and get your ID card.

If you are applying during our busy enrolment period, (August/September) we advise you to come straight to campus to secure your place. See www.hackney.ac.uk for enrolment times.

We’re here to help you choose the right course. Our Customer Services team can tell you about all the courses at the College. Friendly staff will give you initial advice and guidance on the courses we offer that are suitable for you. You can also ask about finances, nursery provision or entry requirements and other aspects of the College. They will refer you to specialist advisers if necessary.

Access to Higher Education Diploma – Nursing

Access courses are designed as a preparation for HE (Higher Education) study. If you have been out of education for a while – or if you didn’t take A Levels when you were younger – an Access course could be for you. It combines study skills with subject specific study.

Access to Nursing (0013-15)This is a popular route to a Nursing Degree. You may be able to get funding support from the NHS for this course. On the course applicants will complete units on Study Skills, Psychology, Health Sciences and the Role of the Nurse. Students will be supported to complete their personal statements and UCAS applications.

Entry requirements: You must be aged 19 or over and have GCSEs grade A-C in maths and English. If you do not have these qualifications other progression routes may be available. There is also a course-specific written assessment and interview.

Possible next steps: This course is designed to prepare students for progression to Higher Education. You can apply to various universities to complete a BSc in Nursing or other health related degrees or HE at Hackney Community College. Once you have gained a degree you could work as a nurse in one of the four branches of nursing (adult, children, mental health or learning disability). You can then follow specialist career paths e.g. health visitor, oncology nurse, substance abuse nurse or community psychiatric nurse.

Length of course (weeks): 36

Hours per week: 14

This course fills very quickly. Check availability before you apply.

If you are aged 24+ you can take out an Advanced Learning Loan to fund an Access course. If you complete a Higher Education course in the same subject you will no longer need to repay this loan.
