A special film screening and talk on the First World War and the role of GAA members will take place at the Tower Museum in Derry on Friday 27 March.

The Green Fields of France, a poetic documentary exploring the role of Irish men who fought and died during the First World War, will be followed by a talk from Donal McAnallen on the role of Ulster GAA members who fought during the conflict.

The event is being organised by the Nerve Centres Creative Centenaries project in conjunction with Derry City Councils Museum Service. The project brings together information and resources about the Decade of Centenaries and the work of the creative and cultural sector in commemoration.

Education Officer with Derry City Councils Museum Service,

Margaret Edwards, said the film was a poignant reminder of the many lives lost in the Great War.

This event offers a fascinating insight into the role of the GAA in the First World War. The extent of the Irish contribution to World War I is so often overlooked in the history books or regarded as controversial.I would encourage anyone with an interest in Irish history to come along and find out more about some of the prominent Irish figures who fought during the conflict, including Irish poets Patrick McGill, Francis Ledwidge and Thomas Kettle.

Over 300,000 Irishmen fought during the First World War although their involvement has long been a sensitive issue. The work of poets such as Ledwidge and Kettle offers a unique insight into the mind-set of men from Ireland fighting across the Western Front, and these figures are given voices by John

Banville, Peter Fallon and Frank McGuinness in the film.

Niall Kerr from the Nerve Centres Creative Centenaries project said the event was a chance to explore the significant role played by Irish men during the First World War.

The film is a chance to relive some of the personal experiences from Irishmen on the frontline while the talk from Donal will open up an interesting discussion on the role of Ulster GAA members during the conflict - men who have often been overlooked or forgotten by history.

Donal McAnallen will follow the screening with a discussion on the GAAs Forgotten Gaelic Volunteers project, outlining the work of the organisations nine month research project to identify members of the organisation from Ulster who fought and died during the war.

The event takes place at the Tower Museum on Friday 27 March at 1pm and is free to attend.

Derry City Councils Museum and Visitor Services is delighted that a rare archive book, Pacata Hibernia, Ireland Appeased and Reduced Or, An Historie of the Late Warres of Ireland, is to go on display as part of the Guildhall Plantation Exhibition, from later this month.

Bernadette Walsh, archivist, explained the Plantation Exhibition, currently located within the Guildhall, allows for changing exhibits and Council was delighted to avail of the opportunity to showcase this hugely interesting rare book to a wide audience

She explained: This publication is extremely rare and is illustrated with eighteen engravings of seventeenth century Ireland, detailing the final years of the Elizabethan

Wars in Ireland and contains a long list of the Irish Nobility who fled to Spain in 1607, after the defeat of the Earls in 1601. The publication contains the background history to the Flight of the Earls, and the inevitable lead up to the Ulster Plantation and will be a welcome addition to the hugely successful Plantation exhibition, that has been visited by thousands of people since its installment as part of multi-million pound regeneration of the Guildhall.

Pacata Hibernia was originally published in London in 1633 for Robert Milbourne. It is believed to be almost entirely composed by Lieutenant Thomas Stafford, who served under Sir George Carew. The very detailed maps and plans show the battle layout, military formation, horsemanship and fortifications

of the times. These items will add interest to the exhibition showing further images of cartography which played a strong role in developments of the seventeenth century.

Bernadette Walsh added that the Museum Services currently has an active loaning policy and currently have a number of loaning agreements with national institutions such as the Hunt Museum Limerick and the National Museums of Ireland.

It is important the archive collection reflects this period of history; original artefacts and archives are considerably lacking not only in our own collections but also within collections across the island.

This rare item was purchased and will now form part of our successful Plantation exhibition at the Guildhall, she added.

ras Cholmcille, The St Columba Heritage Centre in Derry has taken delivery of a very special new exhibit, courtesy of The Fanad Currach Building Group in north west Donegal.

The group, whose ages range from young to not so young, was formed a few years ago to revive the traditional craft of currach building. They met on a regular basis throughout the winter of 2013 in the ballroom of the Atlantic Hotel and before long, what started out as an evening class, became one of the social highlights of the week.

The group produced a total of fourteen full size currachs as well as a few model currachs. The currachs were officially launched in lively sea conditions at Rinboy near Fanad in June 2013. In August the same year, they were transported to Derry and launched in the River Foyle

to mark the occasion of the first ever All Ireland Fleadh being held in Northern Ireland.

The Fanad Currach Building Group made a return visit to Derry this week to present a 12 foot replica custom made currach to the ras Cholmcille Trust and to attend a civic reception in Derrys Guildhall hosted by the Mayor, Councillor Brenda Stevenson.

Welcoming them to ras Cholmcille, Grainne McCafferty, chairperson of The ras Cholmcille Trust, said the currach will be put permanent display in The St Columba Heritage Centre.

The Centre tells the story of St Columba, our citys founding father and gives a unique insight into his life and legacy and our shared Christian heritage.

    This replica currach is similar

to the one St Columba and his companions would have sailed from Derry to Iona in over 1450 years ago so it will give an extra dimension to the story. Another lovely twist is that St Columbas mother Eithne hailed from the Fanad peninsula so we are absolutely thrilled to get our hands on a Fanad Curragh.

Im delighted to accept it on behalf of The ras Cholmcille Trust and Id like to thank everyone involved in the Fanad Currach Building Group for handing it over.

John Fealty, chairman of the Fanad group said the currach building project was a remarkable success with local people aged from 8 to 80 years old involved.

Wed no idea when we started out that it would become so popular. As the weeks went by, more and more people would

drop into the ballroom of the hotel to see what going on.

One of the nicest things about the project was the way it bridged the generation gap. The youngsters enjoyed learning about the traditions and skills associated with currachs and listening to stories from some of the older people. As the weeks went by, it was to see how their confidence had grown and they were able to explain to others joining the group what to do.

Johns sister, Mary, who along with Tommy Shorthall built the replica curragh presented to ras Cholmcille said they look forward to returning and seeing their handiwork on display.

ras Cholmcille is a lovely centre and well worth a visit. Everyone made us very welcome. Thank you on behalf of the Fanad Currach Group, go raibh maith agat.

Derrys historic Beech Hill House Hotel is among the cream of the crop yet again after being named as one of the 100 Best Places To Stay In Ireland by the McKennas Guides.

The Beech Hill, located at Ardmore Road on the outskirts of the city in the picturesque Faughan Valley, is one of just five accommodation establishments in Northern Ireland listed in John and Sally McKennas Guides 2015.

The Guides are regarded as the bible of the best places to eat, shop and stay in Ireland and are now available as Apps as a valuable reference point for visitors and tourists.

Patsy OKane, owner and general manager of the 4* Beech Hill which has 31 guest rooms, said they were delighted to be featured in the prestigious hospitality guide again this year.

She added: The McKennas Guides have continued to rate

the Beech Hill as one of Irelands most attractive places to stay, and we are also privileged to be the only guest accommodation selected in the Co. Derry area.

We regard our inclusion in the McKennas Guides as testament to the hard work and commitment of the staff at the Beech Hill in creating a family atmosphere in our beautiful country house surroundings with excellent food and customer service.

The country house hotel, which was built in 1739 and also has a modern wing, is set in 32 acres of stunning woodland and landscaped gardens. It is extremely popular with American and European visitors as it was used as Base One Europe by the US Navy Marine Corps during World War II and houses a commemorative museum.

President Bill Clinton stayed at the Beech Hill on four occasions and it has hosted a number of

other famous guests including US Senator Ted Kennedy; French President Jacques Chirac; US comedy actor Will Ferrell; and British actor Jude Law as well as a host of other well known faces from the music and entertainment worlds.

The Beech Hill House Hotel is one of more than 50 tourism businesses engaged in Derry City Councils Rural Tourism Development Programme which is part funded by Invest NI and the European Regional Development Funds Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for NI.

Mary Blake, Derry City Councils Tourism Development Officer, said she too was delighted that the Beech Hill had again been selected by the McKennas Guides, recognising the high standard of accommodation and customer service provided at the renowned establishment.

She added: Yet again the Beech Hill is recognised for

excellence, and this is a richly deserved award. I would like to congratulate Patsy, Conor and all the team for their hard work and dedication. This is yet another good news story for the tourism and hospitality sector in Derry and its rural hinterland in the Faughan Valley, and we are looking forward to a further increase in visitors again this year to experience the excellent accommodation, quality cuisine and many visitor attractions on offer in our city and rural destinations. The Promotion of the Discover Faughan Valley project through Invest NI and the European Regional Development Fund is supporting the Beech Hill and 52 other rural tourism businesses.

Members of the new Derry City and Strabane District Council have expressed serious concerns over a range of factors in relation to the transferring function of off street car parking, due to come into effect on 1st April 2015. Derry City and Strabane District Council propose to engage with the DRD Minister urgently in relation to concerns over the budget, the transfer of Queens Quay Car Park and works required to a number of car parks which encompass the 30 locations being transferred to the new Council as a result of Local Government Reform. Correspondence will now be sent to DRD stating that the new Council is unwilling to accept off street car parking

until all concerns have been addressed. As part of an overall due diligence process Council reaffirmed its commitment to investigating all potential works likely to be required as a result of the transferring function.

Concerns have been raised in relation to the budgetary position set out by DRD officials. Due diligence indicates that there will be a potential shortfall in funding which will directly impact Derry City and Strabane District Council. This equates to approximately 186,000-340,000 should the new Council not meet targets set out by DRD.

In addition DRD introduced a pilot scheme of 1 for 5 hours

car parking which is due to end on 31st March 2015, after which it becomes Councils responsibility to set tariffs. Legally on 1st April 2015 tariffs will revert back to their respective per hour costs put in place prior to the launch of the pilot scheme. As a decision must be made by mid March Derry City and Strabane District Council have no choice but to revert back to the respective tariffs charged by the car parks based on the evidence provided to date. These prices are currently advertised on the payment machines located at each car park.

Speaking at a Special Council meeting which took place on Thursday 12th March,

the Presiding Councillor, Cllr Maoliosa McHugh said Derry City and Strabane District Council are extremely concerned in relation to the transferring function of off street parking. Having considered the recommendations put forward by this Council officer team it is imperative further engagement is sought with DRD as soon as possible to ensure we are entering into an agreement which is realistic and assists in achieving the objectives of Local Government Reform. It is imperative an agreement is made in advance of 31st March 2015 to enable a smooth transition of the services

A Derry-based adventure recreation company is gearing up for an influx of visitors after launching a new self-guided cycling tour taking in scenic routes around the Faughan Valley and Sperrins.

Far and Wild, a social enterprise company specialising in remote outdoor activities, has launched Cycle Sperrins in time for a seasonal surge in tourists to Derrys rural hinterland.

Derry City Councils promotion of the Discover Faughan Valley project through Invest NI and the European Regional Development Fund is supporting Far and Wild and 52 other rural tourism businesses.

Cycle Sperrins, which features a breathtaking route taking in the new Derry City and Strabane District Council boundaries, comes as Far and Wild scoops a 15,000 award to develop adventure activities for both local people and tourists in the Faughan Valley and Sperrins area over the next year.Lawrence McBride, Director

of Far and Wild, said: As a company developing a range of eco-tourism services in the North West, I am delighted that Far and Wild has launched a new self-guided cycle hire and tour in the Sperrins.

Cycle Sperrins is our first foray into self-guided trips. However the customer will have plenty of support, including a dedicated map comprising route information and a selection of the best places to stay, eat and visit on their three to four day cycle tour.

The tour will take in spectacular landscapes and terrain across Counties Derry, Tyrone and Donegal, starting from Eglinton to Gortin; Gortin to Draperstown; Draperstown to Downhill; and Downhill to Greencastle via the Magilligan ferry crossing. Mary Blake, Tourism Development Officer with Derry City Council, said: I am delighted Far and Wild have been successful in this award to grow Cycle Sperrins as a new product. The company have been an integral part of the

Discover Faughan Valley Project. Information on Far and Wild and all our activity providers in the region can be found at www.discoverfaughanvalley.com .

Mr McBride said that while the tour was ultimately aimed at cyclists covering up to 60kms a day and availing of accommodation provision in the area, Cycle Sperrins - which traces the ancient routes of settlers back to the Bronze Age in Ireland - would cater for groups choosing any stage of the route, depending on your energy levels!

Welcoming the Award from UnLtd, a UK registered charity founded to reach out and unleash the energies of people who can transform the world in which they live, Mr McBride, who has previously worked both in Ireland and overseas with Raleigh International and Trocaire, said: Thanks to the support of a number of inspiring people, Far and Wild can now build on its reputation as a leading and forward

thinking adventure company specialising in experiences that respect the environment.

We will use the UnLtd Award to deliver a project entitled Transforming Adventure in Communities which will help six communities in the North West develop adventure activities for both local people and tourists in 2015-16.Nuala Smyth, Award Manager at UnLtd, said: UnLtd are delighted that Lawrence, a fantastic social entrepreneur, has received an UnLtd Millennium Award for 15,000. Were looking forward to working with him as he grows and develops Far and Wild.

For further details on how to book a Cycle Sperrins tour or other adventure recreation activities including mountain climbing/biking, canoeing/kayaking or coasteering, contact Far and Wild, North Western Social Enterprise Hub, First Floor, 12-14 The Diamond, Derry. CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO PROPERTYIf your property or vehicle has been damaged as a result of malicious behaviour caused by an assemblyof three or more people such as in a riot situation or by one person carrying out an act of terrorism then potentially you have a claim under the Criminal D a m a g e ( C o m p e n s a t i o n )(Northern Ireland) Order 1977.Any claims arising from this Order are processed by The Compensation Agency based at Royston House in Belfast. As with all claims there are certain criteria that need to be satisfied to successfully obtain compensation and there are certain categories of damage that are not covered by the legislation such as theft or destruction of money or jewellery/watches unless the jewellery was part of stock in a shop that was damaged. If your home is damaged and there is insurance cover in place then you should apply to your insurers for compensation as well as the Compensation Agency however you will not be compensated twice. Your insurers will pay out to you and the Agency will then pay any compensation awarded to the insurers. What steps do I take to make a claim?

If you have been the victim of criminal damage you ought to move quickly and lodge a Notice Of Intention within 10 days of the damage being done. This document is served on the Compensation Agency, the PSNI Divisional Commander for the area in which the damage occurred and finally on any other interested party-eg any building society or bank in the event of a property damage claim or hp company in the event of car damage. It is not fatal if the Notice of Intention isnt lodged within 10 days but in the event that it isnt you need to apply to the Compensation Agency for an extension of time to lodge your notice within 6 months of the date of the incident in question.Upon receipt of your preliminary notice the Agency will send you an application form which you should complete and return ideally within 4 months from the date when you first lodged your Notice of Intention. Again there is discretion to extend that time frame to up to 12 months. You will have

to provide full details of the particulars of the claim to facilitate the assessment of the claim by the Agency who, depending on the nature of the damage, will appoint loss adjustors to assist in the process of quantifying the damage and the amount of compensation payable. You are entitled to instruct your own expert if you choose to liaise on your behalf with the Agency appointed adjustor.

The input from the PSNI is important in these types of claims because the Agency will look to the police for their views as to the circumstances etc surrounding the damage and that information will influence

the success or otherwise of your claim. Therefore it is very important to assist the police in their enquiries as it could backfire on you at a later stage if you dont. Failure to cooperate with the police will result in your claim being refused or withheld. If there is any suggestion that you were involved in acts that led to the damage being done or were associated with the perpetrator(s) your claim will fail.Similarly if you have had any known involvement in acts

of terrorism yourself or been a member of any unlawful association compensation will be disallowed.Compensation may be reduced if the Agency feels you directly or indirectly contributed to your loss. One point you should note is that if the damage is 200 or less then there is no point in making an application under this legislation. If the claim is worth more than 200 then a statutory deduction of 200 will be made from any settlement. For example if your claim is valued at 1000 you will receive 800.The Agency will consider paying damages for consequential losses arising out of damage to your property such as loss of earnings and the like although you are expected to try and keep your loss to a minimum. If the Agency does decide to compensate you it will also pay your legal costs and potentially other professional fees incurred by you. Any offer made by the Agency will be in writing and you simply sign a Form of Discharge if you want to accept it. A Notice of Decision will be issued if there is no offer forthcoming or if no agreement has been reached. If you want to appeal the decision you must lodge an appeal within 6 weeks from the date on which the decision was served upon you. Your appeal will be determined by the County Court.

Acupuncture is a very safe and painfree method which is becoming increasingly popular and can treat many cases as can be seen in the advert below.

Dr Yangs Traditional Chinese Medicine, helping you to concieve! Acupuncture is becoming more and more common and well known in western Culture and TCM (Chinese Medicine) has some answers that are becoming increasingly popular and more receptive to patients. Using

Acupuncture and medicinal plants or herbs to treat infertility were discovered as early as 476 BC in China. Chinese medicine focuses more on the body as a whole including the spirit! The TCM concept sees a person having a reaction between their body, mind and spirit. Its an ancient and balanced approach to total wellness where it tries to find the underlaying cause of disease rather than just treat the symptoms. Practise of this approach has proven its effectiveness when it comes to infertility. Dr Yang of Derrys Huatuo Chinese Medical Clinic has developed an excellent reputation for the incredible succes rate to the condition of infertility. April 1 heralds the beginning of the new Derry City and Strabane District Council, bringing to a close the final page in the history of Derry City Council.

Marking the occasion visitors to the Guildhalls Whittaker Suite and Mayors Parlour, will be welcomed next week by Mayor of Derry Councillor Brenda Stevenson the last serving Mayor of Derry and Deputy Mayor Gary Middleton, as well as other council members. They will give some fascinating insights into the Councils story, represented by some select pieces from the Civic Collection and the many memories they hold. Part of the celebrations will include a Treasure Trail around the Guildhall and Tower

Museum for all ages, where visitors can discover the citys treasures. Speaking before the opening of the collection on Monday, Mayor Stevenson said: Of course its sad to see the end of an era and what has been an eventful chapter in terms of the history of the city. But its extremely exciting in that it marks a fresh start and the opportunity to introduce many changes and improvements to service for the public.

Its going to be extremely emotional for me of course as this marks the end of my time as Mayor. But I really look forward to taking the opportunity to share some of the history and highlights with anyone who calls in to view the civic collection. I would encourage

people to drop in and tell us some of their own stories about the council and its role in the development and regeneration of our beautiful city.

The public can share some of the key moments and memories of the council through a special series of interviews and photographs looking back on the past five decades as the Council Reels in the Years.

Each day next week council staff members will look back on a different decade with features on social media, the local press and radio. And the archives have been raided to provide a collection of photographs capturing some of the highlights over the years which will be broadcast on the Big Screen in Waterloo Street.

The exhibition in the Guildhall will be open from Monday 23rd March to Thursday 26th March, 11am 4pm daily (with the exception of lunchtime on Wednesday). The Treasure Trail is 1 with daily prizes to be won including free tea and coffee with a scone for all visitors to the Whittaker Suite.

This month at Fighting Fit we covered a story on one of our members who has had amazing results with us.

His story though, is one of overcoming obstacles and previous major health problems. Having contracted a rare blood infection, Noel took a stroke and after also needing open heart surgery, he only had a 10% chance of surviving.

His story is one of overcoming adversity but more importantly, how you can overcome it and any obstacle when the desire and will power is there.

Noel is now 42lbs lighter and living a healthier life through exercising and a better approach to nutrition.

I wanted to cover this in this months blog as it is an inspirational story to me, and anyone who is looking to turn their own life around through exercise.

On our wall at Fighting Fit we have in big letters Gohardorgohome. This is our mantra but it is not there to scare you, to make you nervous, to doubt your ability, it belongs to the individual and every individual is different.

It belongs to the person like Noel and to the person who struggles to fight out their first reps. It does not belong to the athlete who breezes through 20 push ups and takes a rest and eases through. Its about the struggle because thats where the magic happens.

What matters is that when you commit to the here and now in the pursuit of progress, you give everything you have. The decisions you made yesterday are in the past so get locked in now and make a change because now is all that matters!

    Nutritional Advicefrom

NUTS KITCHENThe modern day diet of convenience foods is partially responsible in my eyes for a growing number of people in our society left struggling with some minor mental issues. Today we wont even talk about how good you will feel by achieving your perfect body but rather how eating the wrong foods can make your mood take a serious nose dive. In order for us to be of sound mind and body, we need to focus on controlling the production of several small neurotransmitters produced in the brain and the intestines, these tiny fellas are responsible for various functions in our body. One such NT and probably one of the most talked about is called Serotonin, this wee guy is responsible for regulating your mood. As I said it synthesised in the brain and intestines but only in the presence of the non-essential amino acid tryptophan (found in protein rich foods) and with the help of foods rich in B vitamins, fish and vit D we can produce an abundance of serotonin. We know that convenience foods lack vitamins minerals and essential fatty acids (lack of omega 3 also linked with depression) we have all heard of the dangerous chemicals such as the artificial sweeteners, colours and flavourings which will without doubt be written on the label of the low fat mass produced microwavable meal, and beside that you will read how much of that lovely addictive refined carb sugar is in there. Lastly I mentioned that the gut and the brain are linked when it comes to these NTs well the herbicides and the GM foods you are consuming will disrupt the chances of your gut performing optimally.Everyone out there wishes for happiness in their lives and whilst eating healthy nutrient dense whole foods will not guarantee this it will certainly go a long way to helping the situation. Choose the right foods to make you happier, choose NUTS kitchen!

    Top 5 Nutrition Tips!

Poor diet, mild fatigue or a chronic lack of energy can often be addressed with simple prevention steps. In addition to regular exercise, try these dietary tips for a boost of energy:1. Eat a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables (preferably organic) for their cancer protective properties and micronutrients.2. Become a grazer; eat small frequent meals throughout the day. Large meals can trigger the body to release more insulin, resulting in low blood sugar levels and fatigue. Eating smaller meals and healthy snacks during the day can help keep blood sugar levels steady.3. Stay hydrated. Dehydration is a common cause of fatigue drink 810 glasses of water throughout the day.4. Snack right. Choose healthy snacks that contain some protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Good options include a handful of unsalted nuts, fresh or dried fruit, yogurt, vegetable sticks and whole-grain bread or crackers.5. Eat more fibre. Navy beans, kidney beans, chickpeas and lentils are all rich in fibre, which slows the release of insulin and helps maintain a steady supply of energy.

    RESTAURANT REVIEW

Fine Dining AtWaterfoot WinebarA classy and comfortable experience from beginning to end.... The wine bar nestled at the end of the Foyle Bridge in the Waterfoot Hotel boasts a very elegant interior with a great ambience and wonderful staff!

From the beginning of the evening we had a really enjoyable experience, spoiled with an array of fantastic options from two menus. The wine bar offers an evening menu and also an evening special two courses for 12 which runs on a Monday to Friday from 5pm.

I opted to start with the chicken and bacon Caesar salad which was one of the nicest starters I have had! The mix which was served on a bed of crisp salad was delicious! My guest had the 1/2 rack of BBQ ribs which looked so tasty and Im sure it was if the bare bones were anything to go by!

For our main course I had the seared rump of lamb with roast shallot, rosemary gravy and new potatoes with the house

vegetables; a vegetable mix in cheese sauce. The lamb was cooked to perfection drowned in a luxurious rich rosemary gravy which perfectly complemented the dish along with the new potatoes. This was a great change from my normal choosing from any menu I would definitely recommend this for a try! My guest had the fillet of steak with chips and tobacco onions and peppercorn sauce. A classic dish, yet looked very elegant and tasty with the steak cooked to perfection as requested. I sampled some of the tobacco onions which were amazing! So light and full of flavour!

The dessert made for a perfect end to this splendid dining experience with a great selection on offer fit

for any taste. I had the cheesecake special which was raspberry and white chocolate and my guest thoroughly enjoyed the chocolate torte with cream. The two empty plates spoke for themselves. Two beautifully presented plates with great flavour fit for any sweet tooth.

Having dined in this beautiful wine bar I would recommend it for a lovely meal or group outing. A fantastic variety and great prices with a great selection on offer! Definitely will not disappoint!
