February 18, 2018 First Sunday of Lent

Good People of Holy Cross, The Pharisees had it right, up to a point. From the time God appeared to the children of Israel on Mount Sinai, the people had been concerned with making the outward appearance suitable for the presence of God. They thought if they care for the outside first, then the inside will surely follow. Jesus came along and changed the whole picture. Work on the INSIDE first, and then the outside will reflect what is happening on the inside. The danger is, in day to day living, we can be so like those Pharisees when it comes to dealing with ‘other people’. We look. We make a judgment based on what we see, without understanding the person and what may or may not be happening on the inside. Our eyes, our minds, our mouths can get us in trouble every time. Today, if I can catch myself in the act of judging someone else, let me say a prayer for them, and also a prayer for me. If I work on me first, I shouldn’t have any time left judging other people! nuestras mentes, nuestras bocas, pueden meternos en problemas todo el tiempo. Hoy, si puedo atraparme en el acto de juzgar a alguien más, diré una oración por ellos, y también una oración por mí. Si trabajo primero en mí, ¡No debería tener tiempo para juzgar a otras personas!

ST. MARTIN DE PORRES HOMELESS PROJECT Thanks to your generous contributions 110 bags were delivered to the homeless and poor on Jan. 31

st! Each bag contained a man’s sweatshirt, winter hat, scarf, gloves and 2 pairs of socks (all new

items) plus a bag of toiletries. Thanks for making it possible for us to “feed the hungry and clothes the naked”!

Proyecto para personas sin hogar de San Martin de Porres Gracias a sus generosas contribuciones, el 31 de enero se entregaron 110 bolsas a personas pobres y sin hogar. Cada bolsa contenía una sudadera para hombre, gorro de invierno, bufanda, guantes y 2 pares de calcetines (todos los artículos eran nuevos) más una bolsa de artículos de higiene personal. ¡Gracias por permitirnos "dar de comer al hambriento y vestir al desnudo"!

ALTAR SERVER TRAINING Training for children interested in becoming an altar server for Masses in English (5:00pm Saturday, and 7:30am, 9:00am, 11:30am, and 5:30pm Sunday) will take place on Saturday, March 10th from 1:00pm – 2:30pm. Any child who is a registered member of the parish and has completed their First Holy Communion may train to become an altar server. For additional information or to register for training, please email Kris Chatfield at krischatfield@bellsouth.net. Pre-registration is required to participate in the training session.

MISSIONARIES OF THE POOR FOOD DRIVE - LENT 2018

The Missionaries of the Poor are dedicated to "Joyful Ser-vice with Christ on the Cross" by serving the poorest of the poor. They desperately need basic food items to feed over 500 people in Jamaica on a daily basis. This year, peanut butter and boxes of spaghetti only (no other types of pasta, please!) Place your peanut butter and spaghetti in our emptied baptismal font, (like we did with our Giving Tree items.)
