Agriculture generated more than $8 million in total farm gate value in 2016, with timber sales accounting

for 40 percent and row crops of peanuts, hay and cotton accounting for another 25 percent.

Georgetown-Quitman County is a consolidated government.

Quitman County was created from parts of Randolph and Stewart counties in 1858.

The county was named for General John A. Quitman, a leader in the Mexican War, once Governor of Mississippi,

and an avid spokesman for states rights. The county’s only incorporated municipality is

Georgetown, the county seat. It was named for the area in Washington, D.C. It was originally called Tobanana

after a nearby creek.

Georgetown-Quitman County has the potential for a strong business industry base, it has quality education,

and some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. The incomparable Lake Walter F. George, along with the county's many hunting and fishing opportunities,

make Georgetown-Quitman County an outdoorsman's paradise. Come visit for a day, or stay for a lifetime.
