Message fromthe Principal

Reunions are always wonderful events to transport oneself back into the past, where you reminisce and remember the carefree days of your school days and rekindle and renew old friendship and acquaintance. I am delighted to learn that the batch of 1990 have taken initiative to publish the souvenir. I take this opportunity to appreciate the strenuous efforts put in by alumni in bringing this souvenir. I also convey my warmest greetings and felicitations to all the members of the association.

Since its inception in 1972 the school has come a long way. There has been development in terms of infrastructure, academics changes with the introduction of continuous & comprehensive evaluation along with a blend of lots of events and happenings under the leadership of dynamic Principals. The pedagogy and holistic approach that we follow in our school has helped our students to achieve success in their lives. This is evident from HPS Alumni who are well placed in all spheres of life, be it research, sports, Art, business, Medicine, Engineering, Defence Services, to name a few. These old students come back to their alma mater to express gratitude and appreciation for their teachers who are behind their success. Indeed it is a need of the time to have a strong and active alumni association to continue the solid bond between the alma mater and the alumni and contribute to the development of the school through increased interaction and cooperation.

Its been years that we bid adieu to the school. A school which had teachers who taught us passionately, inculcated discipline, morals, wisdom and let me not forget to add etiquette. It laid the perfect foundation to help us build good careers. It truly was the international school of our times. Those jaw dropping playgrounds, the quadrangle adjoining the assembly, those assembly sessions, the sprawling library, those library ID cards so well designed. C’mon guys, who can forget those days. I can still vividly recall those days after assembly, we would want to evade the prying eyes of prefects for not polishing our shoes or for not ironing our clothes. How they would twirl our ears. Those good old days, when immediately after assembly, we would rush to the class room and borrow a friend’s book and copy the homework before the teacher arrived. Those lovely days, when a few guys did more of a detective job and go and complain to the teachers behind our back. And to stop them from complaining, we would bribe them with gold spots or Limca’s and big fun bubble gums. C’mon guys, what BIG FUN those days were. And do you remember, we use to call them SNEAKERS.

Remember how we would all dread the notorious bamboo stick of Pushpa pal madam, the cane of Mathan sir and his resonating voice as he shouted ‘SCHOOL ATTENTION’ followed by ‘SICK BOYS FALL OUT’. Sick boys reminds me about how we used to forge signatures of our parents or get letters written by our seniors to escape Mathan sir’s cane and his famous dreaded line “Narsimha, chadi lao”….let me leave the rest to your imagination. How we were all intimidated by Raja Rao sir. Remember his famous one-liner ‘ I will hang your twenty first finger to the ceiling fan’. But again, those were the days when punishment was a very accepted medium for correction.

Imdad Ali sir who regaled us with ‘WHAT’S YOUR DADDA’ which had all of us in splits. How can anyone not remember the graceful and elegant Franklin madam, Sudhakar sir who was more of a friend than a teacher (the B section guys were so godammn lucky to have him and how the other sections would envy them), the charismatic Puranik sir or the soft spoken Balachandrudu sir. Now, these were the legends under whose tutelage we shaped good careers.

Remember the craft sessions where we all made fishes? Craft will remind you of Ashfaqali sir. Right? Remember he always had a penchant for saying ‘It’s cleaa’ (read it as clear) after he fin-ished explaining something. He would always swallow the ‘R’ and we would all find it so hard to conceal our laughter.

Remember the dining hall, the solid and liquid curries, the hospital which we would visit feign-ing cough so that we can taste the expectorant. Dining hall reminds me about something else. We all would walk in a line to reach there and some people would be covering their butts with

their hands. Reason? Any guesses? Remember, we used to place bets on each kicking the other on their butt and the one who completes three or five, whatever the number would the winner. Remember the periods after lunch, which we would sleep through waiting for Lakshminaraya-na to ring the bell for the games hour. How lucky were we to have had an everyday games hour? Thank school that we are still fit today because of the regular games that we played. Remember cross country guys? You name the sport and we all would have played it.

Remember we used to play statue. If you remember statue, then the word Moffis (I hope I got the word right) will definitely come to your mind. Moffis, when uttered, would relieve you from your statue position. Yaar! Kahan gaye who din?

Remember how wearing pants to school was such a big thing. How much we had to coax our parents to consent. All travails of a middle class upbringing. Remember the ink pens, and how when they leaked would leave a blot on our shirts. How we used ink as a tool for seeking revenge sometimes by splattering it on the back of the shirt, unknown to the guy.

How much we would protect our best friends and never reveal names. We would even get thrashed for someone’s fault but never give out their names. When it came to revealing names, we followed the old Sicilian code of silence…OMERTA!

But thanks to our school, we were way ahead of our peers from other schools in our IQ and EQ levels.

Anyways, getting back to good old nostalgic memories, I am certain you will never forget sports days and investiture ceremonies. What grand events they were? The precision with which mathan sir trained us for the sports day, the march past, the 100 m dash, the relays, the hurdles, the long and high jumps. For our age, it was the Olympics of those times.

Believe me guys, those were the days..Good old days..Golden days…And today, what remains of all that is a distant memory. But, not in a very distant past. It seems all this happened just yesterday, but the calendar reminds me that it is decades now. But, little did we realize that we would get in touch with one another again, thanks to the untiring efforts of the HPSR Alumni Association and of course, technology in the form of facebook and whatsapp, we have cement-ed a lifelong bond.

Our Teachers

Wide landscape with imposing buildings, never ending playgrounds, a variety of activities, none cramped for space or time. Add to this a whole bunch of people teaming with enthusiasm from all strata and different geographies. What more could one ask for? What more education would one want other than to watch and learn from the drama that unfolds. You can’t miss a thing and you wouldn’t want to miss a thing. Nothing is hurried, none is left behind, its a carnival of sorts for the entire stay. No doubt the teachings from math, sciences and subjects held me in good stead later in life but they pale in comparison to what this setting called HPSR taught me.

Of happier days and fond memories!

It is with great pride and mixed feelings that we look back at our childhood days spent as students at one of the prestigious institutions of Hyderabad – the Hyderabad Public School (HPS), Ramanthapur. When we think of ‘school’, it always reminds us of the sprawling campus, the magnificent building and countless friends – all of which have contributed to these sweet memories we wish to share with you all today.

But first, let us start by expressing our gratitude to all our teachers without whom we wouldn’t be what we are today. Or, rather, where we are today. As beings of the very same soil and concrete that you walk through, we humbly bow our head to thee! Today, as mothers who are informal teachers, we completely understand the inspiration and influence a teacher has on young, impressionable minds.

We still remember the feelings of doubt, fear, joy, guilt, hurt, mockery which we’ve experienced through our formative years at school, and how they shaped us as individuals. It was a bit difficult for us to adjust initially as we were only 3 girls in a class full of boys who always made it a point to tease us with catcalls and howls. But, as time passed, the coldness disappeared and the seeming bunch of rowdies (or Khalnayaks as we fondly called them – of course they weren’t aware of it), became our best buddies.

We still remember the first outing with our classmates – we went together to watch Jackie Chan’s The Armour of God. Oh what fun it was!Thanks to Sudhakar sir for initiating the outing. All three of us (the girl gang, we mean) used to huddle together and were treated as VIPs, or royalty or a privileged class. Except for a couple of teachers, rest of the faculty members were always sensitive towards us. But, oh, I do remember the ‘beating on the knuckles’ and ‘chalks being thrown at us’ which kind of regimented us and led us to a life of …..

I guess we girls became kind of tomboys in later years, and enjoyed competing with boys in playing football and basketball, besides of course the very girly tennikoit. The Games period, naturally, was our most favourite one and despite Mathan sir’s strict vigilance ensuring nobody stays away from playing – whatever be the reason.

The moment we think of school, a flood gate opens and memories keep gushing in and out, and the nostalgia sets in. How can we ever forget we getting scared to cross the 10 ‘C’ classroom to go to 10 ‘B’ after the assembly session? Uff, the students of 10 ‘C’ were naughty to the core. Besides 10‘B’ guys were cold and insensitive towards us and behaved as if we never belonged to the same class. Aliens we were to them!But it all sounds silly-yet-funny now. Not to mention that these guys were overtly supportive and protective in the later years of our lives.

We still remember the complaints to the vice-principal about the embarrassment caused when the boarders formed a human chain and blocked the path. And I remember Franklin Mam’s attempt to sensitize students to the other gender by making the boys sit next to the girls in the class. Of course, all her attempts

were futile because not many teachers encouraged this commingling and as soon as the bell rang, we girls used to bunch together.We thank Franklin Ma’am as her efforts didn’t go in vain as boys grew up to be gentlemen and are gender sensitive.

The sprawling school campus is analogous to a book of all the students, who studied, are studying and who would be studying here. Thanks to our valuable faculty and their amazing guidance, we were, are and will always be a supreme institution compared to our major competitors.

As we leave you all with the thoughts and memories of jest, verve, and vigour, we suggest that you try making as many fond memories as you can now, because there’s nothing more precious in your life than your school life and the experiences it offers. As you grow, life offers you new experiences, new encounters, new friends, and new memories – but nothing will come even remotely closer to what you feel at school. Nothing filled that gap for us and nothing will fill it for you… we still remember how, towards the end of our course, we wished that time moved slower. We wish it even now!

Preparing for the Reunion was marked by late evening meetings with friends, at the Sailing Club

Running into an old friend is one of the greatest joys of one’s life. And if that friend happens to be a school friend, the joy is manifold. This year’s reunion, as we all know comes after a gap of 25 years. Thanks to the Alumni Association, the reunion has become a tradition being celebrated every year. And each year the event is only getting better. We are sure that the day we all assemble at school again will be forever etched in our memories.

Planning and pulling-off an event of this magnitude though, was a humongous task! More so because each of us involved in organising the event is already too busy with our own lives! A remark once blurted in exasperation “Kya re, yeh meri ghar ki shaadi hai kya??!” perhaps best summarizes some of the crazy moments that the team went through in the course of making Reunion 2015 possible.

The journey spanned many months, involved scores of meetings, numerous ideas, lots of beer (and some tea and coffee too!). Many man (and woman) hours got spent in collating “to-do” lists, preparing articles & invitations, sending mails, inviting friends, compiling information, following-up, and following-up, and following-up…you get the picture! :)

We started off with several exciting ideas, dreamy-eyed wanting to achieve the moon. Then of course, as is always the case in life, a reality check happens. Despite that, it has been an immensely satisfying experience in bringing many of our ideas to life. Getting all of us to come back to school in our uniforms (khakis, shoulder flaps, et al), gifting gold coins to the retired teachers and money to the staff, creating a batch profile book, making a video about our school years, having lunch and snacks menu with all the items that we savoured during our old school days, were some of the ideas that saw the light of day!

Doing all of this does need funds. But from the very beginning, there was a sense of confidence that if our effort is earnest, the response from our batch would be good. And it indeed was! Thanks to the very spontaneous and generous contributions from all our batch mates, we are well on the way to witness a grand spectacle on the 19th.

Thanks in a huge measure to the Principal who readily gave his approval for the event, the present Head girl who with her disarming smile demurred to compere the show, and the Choir for agreeing with alacrity to play at our morning assembly.

The sprawling grounds beckon, once again after 25 years. Just can’t wait for the calendar to show 19th, and the clock to show 9.30, when we all plan to assemble. To see people sharing anecdotes of our lives at school and reminisce our shared innocent and mirthful past.

Let’s raise a toast to the HPSR 1990 batch!
