“HUGS has been an uplifting light during trying times. They let uslaugh, cry and feel special, especially during the periods when youneed an outside group hug. They showed us that people do care forall members of the family.” These words, said by a HUGS mom, reflect what HUGS is all about – our mission and what we hopeevery family with a seriously ill child in Hawaii will experience.

I am honored and privileged to be a part of HUGS. The spirit and caring that propels this agency forwardamazes me: the steadfast commitment, unwavering dedication and strong compassion of our Board, staff, volunteers and community partners together with the courage, strength, and love of our families. HUGSis a uniquely special organization where you can really see the best of the human spirit each day -community supporting one another through tough times.

The past two years have been have been filled with successes and accomplishments as well as transitionsand challenges. We launched our SibShop® program for siblings of seriously ill children, Teen PeerGroups, strengthened our outreach to children and families in the hospital, and served more families thanever before, 15% more families! The number of volunteers supporting HUGS programs increased by 23%with more than 6,000 hours of service to our families and agency.

This was all made possible only with the incredible help and generosity of our Board, donors, volunteers, and corporate and community partners. We are so grateful to each of them for wrapping our childrenand families with generous hugs to ensure that their challenging journey is made easier. As our families’and their needs grow, we hope you will continue to share your support for many years to come.

Mahalo,

Joan NaguwaHUGS Executive Director

On behalf of the HUGS Board of Directors, I would like to thankyou for your many generous gifts of wealth, resources and timethroughout 2013 to improve the quality of life for Hawaii’sseriously ill children and their families. It was with your supportthat we were able to make a positive impact in the lives of ourHUGS families and children.

2013 and 2014 brought several changes to HUGS. With much gratitude, we bid farewell to John Howell,HUGS Interim CEO, who spent several months leading HUGS until Joan Naguwa, our new HUGSExecutive Director, joined us in October 2013. We also welcomed new HUGS staff: Marty Oliphant,Director of Programs; Stephanie Caoili, Family Service Program Specialist; and Jamie McLaughlin,Development Coordinator.

The HUGS staff and board have worked hard to maintain the quality of our core programs and services tomeet the needs of current and new families.

We need your help to continue our work. Like most Hawaii nonprofits today, HUGS is challenged tosecure sufficient resources to fulfill our mission. Funding resources are rapidly changing their priorities.National and local data indicate that individual contributions have remained flat. The situation at HUGSis no different. Our commitment to our HUGS families and children remain steadfast and the need forour services continues to grow. With your ongoing compassion and support, we will continue our holisticservices of offering support to each individual member of the family and the family as a whole. Pleasehelp us in preserving the important work of HUGS, and make your tax-deductible donation before year’send, or better yet, today. Mahalo nui loa.

Being a military family hasmany challenges. For thespouse of a military service

member, the list of challengesseems to be a mile long. Fromtaking care of a household alone tothe frequent sleepless nightsworrying about their servicemember, the list may seem neverending. The Dita’s seemed likeyour typical Navy family.

They were stationed at Sasebo,Japan with their two small children, Angelo, 4 and Lexi,1, far from home and family. But they knew the drill andwere making the best out of their situation.

Nino was on a routine deployment in the Pacific whenLeah noticed Lexi wasn’t feeling well. She took thetoddler to the doctor and was told Lexie had a coldand prescribed her antibiotics. However, the colddidn’t go away.

A mother’s persistence

“After six weeks and four trips to the doctor, theyfinally decided to look further into what was wrongLexi,” Leah said.

Leah’s persistence led her to taking Lexi to the SaseboNavy Health Clinic where they drew blood to test heriron levels. Doctors noticed Lexie’s red blood cell countwas less than half of what it should have been. Theseresults led the Navy doctors to send Lexi toa Japanese hospital for another more indepth blood test.

After a long week of waiting Leah was calledwith the results of the detailed blood test. There was in fact something wrong. Leahwas advised to return to the states as soon aspossible. Nino was due home in a week soLeah decided to wait for him to come home so he couldbe by her side before they made the decision to return tothe States.

The long journey to Hawaii

On April 1, 2013, two weeks after her second birthday,

Lexi was diagnosed withLeukemia. The next couple dayswere a whirlwind of activity. ByApril 4, Lexi and her family left alltheir belongings behind and tooka 20-hour military flight toHawaii so Lexie could begin thetreatment she needed at TriplerArmy Medical Center. Nino waslater transferred to Joint BasePearl Harbor Hickam.

While being treated at Tripler, someone mentioned HUGS to the Dita’s. Being new toHawaii and Lexi’s new diagnosis, they decided to lookinto HUGS as a resource for information and peersupport from other families dealing with lifethreatening illnesses.

They quickly found HUGS to be so much more. Thesupport the Dita family received from HUGS touchedthem on an emotional level. Leah said she was sopleased, that not only did she receive an out pouring ofsupport from other families, but from the staff as well.

“Both of the Dita children love being apart of HUGS,”Leah said, “We are all so comfortable being aroundHUGS. It’s what keeps us going back.” Leah adds,“Lexi, Angelo and Nino’s eyes always light up wheneverwe mention ‘HUGS’.”

The entire family gets support from HUGS. Participatingin HUGS events has allowed thefamily to relax and just enjoy beinga family. They have participated inmany HUGS activities fromHUGS monthly Family Dinners toSurf4HUGS.

Being a military family the Dita’sknow that the most valuable

support you can get is that of those going through asimilar situation. And sometimes you have to build afamily from those around you when you are so far fromyour own. HUGS has filled the void for both theemotional support and the ‘ohana the Dita’s need whileLexi heals.

RESPITE PROGRAM

ver since our daughter became ill, we were uncomfortable withleaving her with other people, even our family members,” said oneHUGS mom. “With the support and encouragement of HUGS staff

and other HUGS families, we soon learned that taking our daughter to therespite program was the best thing we could do for our whole family. She andher siblings have had a chance to make new friends and regain theirchildhood in a safe, nurturing place. Everyone there understands that they areill and we don’t worry about exposure to viruses that could make ourdaughter more sick. They always look forward to the fun they have. And we,as parents, have a chance to enjoy an evening out together.”

FAMILY EVENTS

Each month, HUGS brings familiestogether for family dinners and otherspecial events. This is an opportunity for

new families to meet experienced families andforge strong support networks amongthemselves. Our HUGS families understand thestruggle that each are going through every day incaring for a seriously ill child and can providesupport for each other like no one else can.Families are brought together to share the hardtimes and the milestones and in turn leave withlasting, supportive relationships.

“When our child was diagnosed with leukemia,we suddenly had to move to Hawaii for medicaltreatment,” said a HUGS mom. We didn’t knowanyone and didn’t have any family nearby. It wasa scary experience. Then we found out aboutHUGS and were invited to a family dinner. Atfamily dinner, we met other families who hadbeen through what we were going through andfelt embraced by them. Now our children knowother children like themselves and we knowother parents with ill children. What a comfortthey have been to our entire family.” Their newfound friendships made at the HUGS house led the family to invite two other HUGS families to spendThanksgiving Dinner at their home. These lasting relationships are what HUGS is built upon.

Special events, such as The Celebration of Life, Surf4HUGS and our HUGS Christmas parties bring familiestogether in celebration and are enjoyed by both the HUGS children and their parents. A big mahalo to our sponsorsof our family dinners and special events for their financial and volunteer support which created these events – XeroxHawaii, Alexander and Baldwin, Inc., Steven Nakao/Tenrikyo Mission of Hawaii, HUGS Board of Directors, SunsetRanch, Hawaii Air National Guard, The Locations Foundation, Brett & Dee Thomas, Kiwanis of Honolulu,Optimists of Honolulu, NAIOP Hawaii, David Kostecki & Elizabeth Ignacio, M.D.

PEER SUPPORT GROUPS

Peer Support Groups enable both Moms and Dads the opportunity toengage with their peers, gain insight, encourage one another andhave a night off to just enjoy themselves. HUGS provides parents and

caregivers the opportunity for much needed personal time away from theintense demands of caring for a child with a serious illness. Sharing mealsand/or activities allows for the parents to provide support to one another ina safe space and to explore their feelings by talking story with other parentswho understand. “I love theopportunity to just be withthe Moms,” said a HUGSmom. “We talk, do specialthings and have fun. It’s soimportant to have this timefor ourselves.”

SIBLING SUPPORT

HUGS recognizes that siblings of a child who isseriously ill, may have feelings of isolation, have theneed for concrete information about the illness and

possible outcomes, guilt, and concerns about the future. In2013, HUGS launched its SibShops® program – a series ofworkshops just for siblings of children who are seriously ill. This national program uses proven curriculum to help siblingsexpress their concerns and understand their feelings throughfun, constructive activities and peer-to-peer support. Inaddition, siblings are treated to a 3-day annual SibCamp, packed with fun, self-esteem building activities, workshops andoutdoor challenges.

“Camp was fun!,” said Sara, a 10 year old sibling. She and herfamily had recently spent a lot of time at the hospital as herbrother underwent several medical treatments. “I learned a lotabout myself and made a lot of friends. I like going to theSibShop® sessions, too.” Her mom later told staff that theSibShop® experiences have really helped Sara to be morepatient with her brother and to understand why they had tospend so much time with him.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Cost of medical care for children who have a serious illness can easily drain a family’s savings and otherfinancial resources. The medical expenses incurred by these families during the diagnosis, treatment andfollow up care phases of their child’s disease often last several years, if not their child’s lifetime, and can

total to hundreds of thousands of dollars. While private and public health insurance may cover many of thedirect medical expenses for the ill child, families are often faced with out-of-pocket expenses such as medicationsand/or treatment not covered by their health plans or basic living expenses and travel costs incurred during off-island or mainland treatment. And HUGS is there to help. In 2013, thanks to our donors to our Hawaiian MilesCharity account, HUGS enabled 19 family members to fly to the neighbor islands and the mainland foremergency medical treatments and support each other during these times of crisis. Thanks to the donors to ourKokua Kupboard, eighty-four (84) boxes of food were provided to 54 HUGS families who experienced periods offinancial hardships. And when one of our HUGS children leaves us, HUGS is not only with their families foremotional support, but also helps defray some of the cost of funeral expenses.

HOSPITAL VISITATION

Once a week, you’ll see one of HUGS trainedvolunteers and staff, wearing their bright pink shirtsand pulling HUGS’ Laughter Wagon through the

halls of the pediatric wards of Kapiolani Medical Center forWomen and Children or Kaiser Permanente Medical Centeror Tripler Medical Center as they visit new and experiencedhospitalized children and their families. They offer support, interactive play activities with the toys and games from theLaughter Wagon to bring smiles to the children and theirsiblings. “We have a chance to take a break, too, to run errandsor just sit outside for a while,”said one HUGS Dad. “It helpsto know that our child is safe and having some fun when weare not in the room.”.

2013 CELEBRATION OF LIFE

On a perfectly sunny Hawaii day inSeptember 2013, HUGS families gatheredat Sea Life Park to honor and celebrate

those children who passed on during the year atthe HUGS Annual Celebration of Life event. Ateam of volunteers from our decade-longcorporate sponsor, The Locations Foundation, was on hand to help with the event. Families andchildren wrote beautiful messages ofremembrance on large pinwheels for each lostchild and spent a quiet moment together to honorthem. The pinwheels were then placed on thelawn area to flutter and send each message in thewind. Everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch andtoured the attractions of Sea Life Park. Mahalo toThe Locations Foundation for sponsoring thisspecial day for our children and families.

2013 SUNSET RANCH

Hidden above Pupukea on Oahu’s North Shore,HUGS families were treated to a relaxing day at thebeautiful Sunset Ranch. The breathtaking views

provided the perfect backdrop for families to enjoy a chanceto lounge and chat with each other, play badminton andcroquet, explore their creative side with art activities or havequiet moment. In addition to these activities, a great mealand birthday celebrations, our HUGS children were giventhe opportunity to learn to ride horses – a first for many.Boy, did they have fun!

Many thanks to Greg Pietsch, owner of Sunset Ranch, forhosting HUGS’ families and to HEART (Hawaii EquineAssisted Reflection and Therapy) for creating a very specialday for HUGS.

Surf4HUGs 2013

Ten years ago,the amazingduo, Brett and

Dee Thomas, createdHUGS’ annualSurf4HUGS event justfor our HUGSchildren and families.Originally looking for

a way to involve their children and friends in giving backto the community, they have created one of the mostfavorite events of the year. And each year, this eventcontinues to grow. A total volunteer-driven event, Brettand Dee gather their fabulous team of 50 volunteers anddonors to provide a memorable event for HUGSchildren. Each child got to ride the waves at Kuhio Beachwith the assistance of volunteers – an exciting, first-timeexperience for many of them! As an added surprise, anice cream truck pulled up with free ice cream treats foreveryone! Big HUGS to Brett and Dee Thomas, theirgreat volunteer team, Rainbow Drive Inn for their annualdonation of lunch for everyone, Ted Coons for donatingall of the beverages, Koa Board Sports for loaning thesurfboards and many, many others to helped to create agreat day for HUGS children and families.

“This event is one that we lookforward to every year. Our family has

a chance to take a break from ourdaily challenges. It brings big

smiles to our children’s faces.”— HUGS Dad.

HUGS Volunteers Make a Difference

Volunteers have an enormousimpact on the well being of HUGSfamilies. Daily they make a

difference in supporting families duringtheir greatest time of need. Whether it’scoaxing a smile and soft giggles from achild resting in a hospital bed, giving areassuring touch to the shoulder of aworried parent or wiping sweat from theirbrow after spending time in the hot suncleaning the playground for the keiki ,HUGS volunteers each show support intheir own special way.

Ken Stridiron, a recent UH Manoagraduate and HUGS Laughter Wagonvolunteer since 2013, makes time in hisbusy schedule to go to Kapiolani MedicalCenter to sit at the bedside with criticallyill children.

“Every Tuesday morning, I visit HUGSfamilies at Kapiolani. If the patients don’tsee my bright pink volunteer shirt, theysurely hear my wagon full of toys comingdown the hall. All of the staff and familiesare so appreciative of the time and energythat I put in, so it pushes me to keepgiving,” said Stridiron.

The Laughter Wagon volunteers also assistfamilies at Kaiser Pemanente MoanaluaMedical Center and Tripler Army MedicalCenter.

While not all volunteers are able to go intothe hospitals, many volunteers like TangiTrilles, give of their time and compassionto support Respite Nights and other family

programs held at the HUGS house. Trilles,an Early Childhood Education student atHonolulu Community College, has helpedprovide childcare service to HUGS familiesfor the past six years. It is her consistentvolunteer commitment that makes her sovaluable to the HUGS programs. Respiteand Family Dinner programs requireapproximately 50 volunteers per month.Having such a high need for volunteers hasresulted in meaningful and mutuallybeneficial partnerships with groups such asPunahou School. Under the support of aHarry & Jeanette Weinberg FoundationGrant called “Educating the Heart”, youngPunahou students recruited by instructorSharan Power build on their servicelearning by participating in HUGS familyprograms. Fostering a sense of civicinvolvement is not only rewarding but fun.

“Working with the HUGS kids is always afun and amazing experience. They are allfull of ideas, craziness, love and energy, despite what many of them have beenthrough… I love being able to have animpact on the lives of these kids, even if it’sas small as just making their Fridays a littlebit more fun,” proclaimed an enthusiasticPunahou student. There are also those important behind-the-scenes volunteers like Gail Matsuoka,Aileen Tsuneyoshi and Patti Ihori. Afterhaving busy working careers and familylives, they now generously spend part oftheir retirement years in the service ofothers. They may not have direct contactwith HUGS families, but their continuouseffort to help with clerical and

administrative tasks is critical to deliveringfamily services that makes theirvoluntarism priceless. Although they maynot realize it, the time they spend sendingout mailers, assisting with data input, organizing supplies and resources andother tasks ultimately allows the HUGSstaff to focus on the more immediateneeds of families.

“Our office volunteers allow us to be moreavailable to our families. They bring their

talents and creativity to get the job doneand in the end it’s the families who benefit,”said Ann Yasui, Volunteer Coordinator.

In 2013, more than 6,000 hours ofvolunteer service can be accounted for.Certainly that there are many more hoursthat go unseen or are anonymouslyoffered. Volunteers are one of HUGS’ mostvaluable resources. To try to put a dollaramount to what they all contribute wouldrun the risk of undervaluing their true gift– after all how do you determine the worthof compassion, caring and kindness?

Whether tackling jobs big or small, eachvolunteer becomes a member of the HUGSteam that together makes a significantcontribution to helping families.

‘Iolani School eighth grader, Waylon Ho,put it most succinctly, “The tasks we didtaught us that helping doesn’t have torequire a load of money, but it can be justhelping in small ways. HUGS isn’t just agroup, it’s a family.”
